Attentive Neowin readers might have noticed we have just launched a brand new feature: Neowin Alerts. We are now able to offer members the ability to have alerts on the latest Neowin news, direct to your phone, email, or MSN Client.

You can sign up for the alerts by clicking on the image above, or by following this link. The alerts will come every time a new post is added to the front page.

The service is being operated by Messagecast.net, and we'd like to thank them for their extensive help and time.

Update: We've had an amazing response - ~2000 sign-ups in the last 48 Hours!

I think this is a GREAT concept. But it still needs some more work. I would love to recieve updates and stories on my cell phone. The only problem is Neowin usually has MANY stories per day. I don't want my cell phone getting flooded with text messages about stuff I don't want. Not to mention it will hike up my cell bill. There needs to be a way to customize it. Maybe only send alerts when keywords are found in an article or send one update a day with all the stories headlines. I love the concept! Keep up the good work!
#10.1 Jstphish on 20 Aug 2004 - 19:55
I completely agree, it does need to be tweaked.

#19 Starman on 20 Aug 2004 - 18:10
I haven't looked at it yet, but I hope it's set up with levels of importance. I don't need to be hammered by every SCO article that comes through.

Great idea, though!

cool
#33 Jstphish on 20 Aug 2004 - 19:25
Awesome. I doubt I'll ever use it since, 1) I rarely use MSN Messenger and 2) I don't want to be charged for messages on my phone but I really love the fact that Neowin supports just about all news services out there (RSS, Klip, email). Giving people amazing options is really what helps set this community apart from others (besides the amazing people here).
#34 JCAP on 20 Aug 2004 - 19:27

#39.1 jameseuk on 20 Aug 2004 - 19:56
yeah i found that a bit odd aswell
#39.2 The_Decryptor on 21 Aug 2004 - 17:29
It's cause the alerts are not running through microsoft, they are managed by a company called messagecast (i think) they send the alerts to you (dont know why they arn't listed on ms's site, must have a aggreement or something)

Edit: i might be wrong, this is what i have gathered
#40 jameseuk on 20 Aug 2004 - 19:57
Nice pun on the title of this news story
(5 replies) #41 lare2 on 20 Aug 2004 - 20:14

#41.2 lare2 on 20 Aug 2004 - 20:18

#41.3 Mister Lamar on 20 Aug 2004 - 20:52
u have to pay to use MSN Mobie, but to set MSN up on mobile I have to pay right. I get 750 Text per month for free.

#41.4 un0™ on 21 Aug 2004 - 00:24
No, but mobile providers charge for recieving messages. Alerts = mesages = $
#41.5 carstereos on 21 Aug 2004 - 05:33
You can choose to only recieve alerts on your messenger on the PC. You do not have to get them via cell phone. Many news stories get posted every day.
#42 Steffan on 21 Aug 2004 - 01:47
:/

I signed for it 4 hours ago and I haven't gotten any alerts yet. I have received stuff from bink.nu tho. I signed up for bink's a couple of mins after signing up for neowin's.

edit: w00t! I finally got some alerts. are the alerts only coming from the main area? what about the software and gaming areas?

yea! this is a handy feature. Neowin has become an addiction.
(2 replies) #45 Jugalator on 21 Aug 2004 - 10:08
Can't your RSS feeds be used for this instead?

More info here:
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=195886

Anyway, that's what I'd prefer since you can use any RSS reader you want for it, not just these three.

I know there are RSS readers for Java-enabled mobile phones, and others that can send RSS updates by SMS. Wouldn't suprise me if there is apps to send RSS updates by mail too.

You also don't need to sign up to anything.

We have RSS feeds already; this is an additional offering for users of MSN Alerts enabled devices..
#45.2 Jugalator on 21 Aug 2004 - 13:11
I know you have RSS feeds already, that's why I told about them, since many devices are already "RSS enabled".

There are Pocket PC RSS readers, Palm RSS readers, mobile phone RSS readers, and so on.
(of course also numerous readers for all common desktop OS'es)

I guess this can be good for some people, was just a bit surprised by the amount of replies here.

Note I'm not complaining about this decision, just informing that Neowin have had news alerts for quite a while now that works on a whole lot of devices.

#48 Sim31 on 21 Aug 2004 - 18:29
I think everyone found out about this idea from Bink becuase I saw this first on Bink, he made a big email about it to all his subscribers and now neowin has it and msfn has it, wonder whats going on everyones gonna do it now?
#49 FireWire on 21 Aug 2004 - 20:00
I signed up and I am not getting any alerts whatsoever... what's wrong? Anyone know why my msn isn't showing any of these alerts?
#50 FireWire on 21 Aug 2004 - 21:04
Could this have anything to do with me not recieving the Neowin alerts? (From the MS Alerts site)

"We are unable to complete your task at this time. The Microsoft Alerts service is experiencing difficulties. Please try your task again later."
#51 SquareSoft0 on 22 Aug 2004 - 05:04
