Expect Microsoft to announce its long-anticipated foray into the online music business this week, raising the competitive stakes for the current market leader, Apple. Microsoft plans to quietly launch the MSN online music store with the new version of its Windows Media 10 player.
Early-release versions of the player look like knock-offs of Apple's iTunes Music Store, complete with brushed nickel finish. But hey, why mess with success? A button in the upper right corner of the player will take consumers to the download store. Microsoft has told entertainment executives that it expects to introduce as many as 130 million people to its music download store as computer users are prompted to update their media player software. And that's not counting the 300 million people who drop by the MSN site.
The software giant also touts the music store's compatibility with nearly 60 digital music players. Not included in the list is Apple's popular iPod. However, reports that Microsoft had scored a Beatles exclusive for the music store are, in the words of the song, ``Nowhere Man.''

I have favourite radio stations on Windows Media but I have different stations on MSN, it's not good
I hope Windows Media requires .NET passport.
But I know that WMP10 won't play .rm files or at least the technical beta doesn't.
As far as MS Bietching Goes. What they heck are you doing on a site called NeoWin if you are bietching about Microsoft. For all of thier OS and applications faults they have connived stolen pushed bullied and dragged computing to your home.
Please don't fool yourself into believing that computing is where it is at today than for any other reason than Bill Gates lied to IBM and told them he had an operating system for thier hardware.
Yes Unix is the foundation for many of the technologies, and LINUX ROCKS, but we wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for commodity computing.
We don't like Walmart. We don't like Costco, but darn if there aren't alot of people going to those places.
Pity that it'll obviously use WMA though... if only Apple would unlock it on their iPods. There's still nothing that compares to the iPod sadly, from what I can see...
Like the new interface. Might persuade me to switch from iTunes.
I've never actually used one of Creative's portable music players, but they are very nicely priced compared to the iPod and can play WMA files.
