Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) is the new update for Windows XP. It provides an enhanced security infrastructure, increased manageability and control and an improved experience for users. Microsoft will send out Windows XP SP2 through the Automatic Updates (AU) delivery mechanism in Windows XP. Microsoft have confirmed that today (25th A.M. US time) is the official release day and XP will automatically start downloading this latest update.

As a testament to the excellent reception SP2 has received publicly Neowin readers chalked up over 200,000 downloads between 6th August when it went RTM and 11th August when the 266mb network install version was released on Microsoft's public servers.

A Microsoft Representative has also give us some extra info. "The Average download size for the Home version is 80mb. The Pro version weighs in at 100mb, plus both would need an extra 20mb if SP1 isn't already present". He explained.

I pointed out that 100mb - 120mb its not something dial up users will be looking forward too, even on broadband its still gonna take a while.

"Microsoft has made alternate plans for customers not able to download SP2 via AU. Microsoft will be distributing the update CD free on cover of most popular computer magazines. They should start appearing within the next few weeks." He explained.

"Also Microsoft will be launching the official XP2 End-user website as part of the official launch. On the Microsoft website every customer will be able order a free copy of the SP2 update CD". He finished.

"Turn on AU (System Properties > Automatic Updates > Automatic)"

I believe that should read "Turn OFF Automatic Update"

Mine is off to prevent the inevitable system meltdown that will occur.

AU is not working well for me.
Keeps showing the same update(asked newgroups and forums, tried everything but no good) that is already installed and no SP2.
Its 3 days already.

AU automatically updates ya know. thats why its called that. What windows xp you using?
Quote this comment #10.2 Posted by iron2000 on 24 Aug 2004 - 16:19
Home Edition.

AU is set to notify but don't auto download and install.
I know this setting works as the other PC at home had the SP2 notify.

Anyone know if the network installation for different languages will be somewhat earlier available for download than via the "regular" AU?

weird... on my girlfriends comp, the sp2 update came up automatically under Windows Update last night at around 9:00 pm EST. she of course came running into my office (aka gaming room as well) to ask me what it was and should she download it, and I of course said yes and sat there and watched it all install with not one problem... thinking this was the official release.

so was this some kind of glitch in Widows Update because this article says it is tomorrow?

#23, Microsoft hasn't even made SP2 available freely on CD yet, so where did you get your CD? Or if you meant you burnt the network installation setup onto a blank CDR

You have to make your own Bootable SP 2 CD yourself, it is very simple actually.
