Internet to see major strike today?

Advertisement (Why?)
Yevgeny Kaspersky, of Kaspersky Labs fame, has raised concerns of a major attack on the internet today. Kaspersky has been widely quoted as saying that there would be a major online attack against Israeli sites today. "Arabic and Hebrew language websites contained an announcement of an 'electronic jihad' against Israel, to start on 26th August 2004".

True? Quite possibly. However, after this news was widely circulated around the web, Kaspersky went on to clarify his comments. He remarked that the true possibility of the threat was 'low', but added that Kaspersky Labs would be raising their online thread level.

He also commented (and raised a very valid point) that if not today, it could be tomorrow that we see an attack. He noted that the many insecurities in the internet’s structure and popular Operating systems meant that it was only a matter of time before online terrorists added 'the internet' to their arsenal of weapons.

Although such a major attack has yet to take place on the internet, a few have come close. Of note, an attack on Akamai, WWW content distributor/cache, did serious damage due to the number of sites hosted with them. Equally damaging was an attack in October 2002 on the Root servers of the internet, that manage DNS. For more information on this kind of attack, read here for an extensive interview with Dave Dittrich.

Home network control
Home Network Control enables you to control supported Trend Micro software installed on other computers on your local area network (LAN). You can scan other computers on the network for viruses, update their program components, and check them for known Microsoft security vulnerabilities. You can also configure and view the properties and logs of the Trend Micro software on other networked computers.

Wi-Fi detection
Wi-Fi detection monitors your network and warns you of unwanted intrusions. Since accessing a wireless Ethernet (Wi-Fi) is much easier than making a physical connection, network intrusion has become a serious security problem. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security will scan your network at the interval you specify, and warn you when new computers connect.

Microsoft security vulnerability check
Security Check inspects your computer for vulnerabilities that Trend Micro has identified as presenting a significant risk. These vulnerabilities or "security holes" make it easy for attackers, viruses or other Internet threats to harm your computer. Microsoft has publicly identified these vulnerabilities as issues that exist in their software. Patching security vulnerabilities helps significantly reduce the chance your computer will be attacked or infected by viruses.

Spyware scan and clean
Many Internet threats are not viruses or other inherently malicious code. Rather, they are applications which compromise your privacy, allow hackers to take control of your computer without your knowledge, or annoy you. They are frequently unknowingly downloaded along with desired applications. These threats include spyware, adware, dialers, joke programs, hack tools, remote access tools, password cracking applications, and other uncategorized software. Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security can scan for and clean these threats manually, or as a part of a Real-time Scan.

Turbo Scan
Turbo Scan allows you to speed up Manual Scan by skipping files that have already been scanned. When Turbo Scan is enabled, Trend Micro Internet Security keeps a record files that have been scanned. If there have been no changes to the file since it was last scanned, it is not scanned again. This can substantially reduce the time required for a Manual Scan.

Lightweight installation mode
The Lightweight installation mode allows you to install Trend Micro Internet Security with only Real-time Scan enabled, one of the most popular configurations used.

I'm a bit worried about the level of news nowdays in neowin.
This used to be my nr1 source but lately some of the news are like 3 days old.

This "news" is just an urban legend, a hoax.

2. It has the same content as us.
3. Its not "an urban legend" - the guy merely clarified his comments.

Osama is a very busy man, seems what ever happens he is doing. If people need PR they make a comment about Osama. I'm getting tired of it. Irak was not Osama, hackers are not Osama, what's next we have to be worried ? Lucky I do live in a country that doesn't interfere all over the planet so nobody is pissed at us
#22.1 ike on 26 Aug 2004 - 15:39
... "Irak"?
#22.2 Jugalator on 27 Aug 2004 - 09:32
Irak is a spelling in several non-US countries so I guess that's why

If this happens I wonder if NATO will cut the cables that carry internet traffic between the Middle East and the rest of the world.
#25.1 stuey82 on 26 Aug 2004 - 14:12
I wish they would. Do us all a favour!!
#25.2 rrezende on 26 Aug 2004 - 23:48
They really should do that.
And, while cutting, they should also cut all those oil pipes. This way we might learn to live without oil after researching a bit and wouldn't need wars because of it.
#25.3 Genesi on 27 Aug 2004 - 00:50
We (America) should also cut our funding (hey, piplines, cables, funding all the same).
#25.4 nojetlag on 27 Aug 2004 - 06:14
Well if Europe cuts some cables the first one would be the one to NATO, this organisation is not necessary anymore. Rather we focus on Europe, no need for a bunch of trigger happy expedition corps for oil and setting up new puppet regimes.
#25.5 rrezende on 27 Aug 2004 - 12:28
Yes. Cut the funding. But then you'll have to dig your own oil and you'll discover your reserves are almost dry. On the other hand, you might just find a better energy source and sell the technology to the rest of the world.
#25.6 X-Spyder on 27 Aug 2004 - 19:34
Unfortunately most alternative fuel sources pollute just as much if not more than the factories (plants) producing refinded oil. As a planet we are really going to have a tough time with moving from oil to something else I think.
#25.7 Shining Arcanine on 28 Aug 2004 - 18:16
nojetlag, Europe is a part of NATO.

X-Spyder, there is always electricity and there are mutiple ways of obtaining it. There are hydroelectric plants, geothermal plants, wind mill plants, solar panels, satelites in space beaming energy in the form of microwaves to earth, fuel cells (methane and hydrogen to my knowledge) and then nuclear power. If we use them, I'm sure we'd be able to leave the oil in the ground, where it belongs. Then in the future we could drop nuclear power in favor of cold-fusion.

In my analyzing they also want to use the hight traffic of windows xp update to help making the internet attck/more slower/down.
but they maybe not success as big as it is warned. but we need to prepare

Maybe they will postpone the attack, since many security company and expert are watching.
the possibilities if they delay it, someday around 9/11.

Man, the middle east is like one big @ss trailer park! Those people have been fighting for thousands of years and prolly won't stop until someone gets an FTD Pick Me Up Nukay. Arabs get pissed and offended when someone shows them the bottoms of their shoes. WTF can you do with a culture that touchy!?
#32.1 tony976 on 27 Aug 2004 - 08:11
they wear shoes? <G> bah well, we can't all be so privlidged <G>
#32.2 rrezende on 27 Aug 2004 - 12:35
I agree with you. We should just leave the Middle East alone. Perhaps just ignore them all (Israel included, of course). Then, let them fight it all. When they're ready to talk and trade something, we might welcome them back. But we'll have to be free of their oil first. Otherwise, we just can't do that.
We are like hookers who want another life but just don't have another way to make money.
#32.3 Magallanes on 27 Aug 2004 - 15:00
Agreed, arab a israeli (all stupids) must stop to bother to the rest of the world!

Anyways if they want wars... then wars they will receive (i'm ready for start a all brand new meow wars!.. meow meow meow).

#32.4 tony976 on 27 Aug 2004 - 18:13
rrezende, that might be all well and good, but we need oil, sad fact, given all we know what it does to our planet. but we still need it, and will need it for a long while.
we need them, they have us over a barrel, so to speak <g>
