Unveiled yesterday in Japan, Samsung has shown what it claims is the world's first mobile phone that incorporates a hard drive.

The SPH-V5400 includes 1.5GB of hard disk storage as well as an FM radio, 64-voice polyphonic ringtone support, a 240 x 320 display and TV output preparing the way for the day when mobiles incorporate Microsoft Portable Media Center-style functionality.

When the SPH-V5400 goes on sale in South Korea later this month, it will retail for around $800.

SAMSUNG also stated that battery life expected will be of 3 to 4 hours making it perfect for a mobile/cell phone

I feel for the first person that buys this. Cell phones have always had a problem with heat. Not so much to the point that it effected the way the phone functions or it's interactive performance but to the human ear. People tend to sit and talk on cell phones for longer and longer periods of times nowdays since prices are dropping just as fast as computer prices are.

The downfall to adding the hard drive, as miniature as it may be, is that it will add even more heat to the phone itself. Good concept though and I hope they've thought of the same issues as I'm referring to now. If so, the phone will be a great little incentive for future mobile phones.

Totally agree!

I've got both a Creative Zen USB2.0 20GB player and an iPod. The first time I sync'ed both of them (10Gb's worth of music), you should have felt the player - it was very, very hot - I'd possibly say uncomfortably hot if you'd have had to hold to player next to your face (which, I know, you didn't).

If there's a lot of HDD usage going on during phone use, that's gonna hurt - or at the very least, be very uncomfortable!

i personally have never had a problem with heat. Maybe its because your pockets are tight then yes the phone will get somewhat warm.

Didn't philips make a phone with a built in 4GB mini-optical drive ages ago? Perhaps they just talked about making it! Who knows...

This thing can come in handy at work. Tranferring and modifying files at different computers can be made easier, especially if I modify a document and don't have a floppy around, or if I need to find a quick way to transfer a large PowerPoint presentation to another non-networked computer.

It makes sense and I didn't know why it didn't occur to me before that Samsung would do this considering they make both phones and hard drives themselves.

oh boy $800... don't you think its a bit overpriced for a phone? somehow, i kind of always think that samsung overcharge its product... especially mobile phone...

I bet after you search the hard drive for the mp3 file that you store somewhere on the drive, the battery is half gone lol ... and yeah after you finally found it and play a few songs you probably need to recharge your battery... ahhaha

The day I rely on my cell phone is the day I put a slug in my head. I want a phone that can make and receive phone calls. I don't need porn or music on my cell phone.
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by roxics on 09 Sep 2004 - 08:51
I totally agree. Why do people want everything on their cell phone? Why not just have the phone be just a phone and let it do what it does best. Everytime a company starts integrating product lines like this they make things more confusing and unweildy to use.

It was unveiled in Korea, not Japan.
Could be due to the fact that it is made by a Korean company.......

Well, if you compare features of this phone to some of the phones YOU GUYS OWN NOW... this phone is effectively better in most aspects. The fact that a mobile phone damages you, is not upto them it is upto consumers - so if you dont like radiations then you dont buy it; The price is probably expensive because of all the new features. Once it establishes itself on a market, the price will drop as new succesors appear.

Overall, weren't we expecting something quite like this to happen? It happened now, and the only change needed is the price which will effectively take place sooner or later.
