Really this is old, its the one that first came out right after, but you had to call MS to get it.

Its probably a patch that is needed, but it may have been rushed. Often when a patch is only available on request it means that they are unsure of it and want to minimise any damage that may arise, so they limit its distribution. Now that they have had some time to test it and get feedback on it they are putting it out to the masses.

If it was not available to everyone, then it was not officially released. If you already have this, then you were a willing beta tester. Man, MSFT really has a sweet deal with so many willing beta testers. Too bad they don't offer to beta test with Universal subscribers instead of the general public, they might get better results from it.

How many of you home users use the following on a regular basis?
MS VS.NET Enterprise Architect
MS VS.NET 2003 Enterprise Architect
MS Visio for Enterprise Architect 2002
MS Visio for Enterprise Architect 2003
MS Project (any version)
MS Office Xp, 2003
MS Visual Fox Pro 8.0
MS Visual Source Safe 6.x
MS SQL server 2000
MS IIS 5.1 with ASP.NET

Had they tests more with some of us (corporate customers), SP2 might not have been so buggy when it was released and actually worked properly with the products I mentioned. They especially would have gotten better results if they had offered a discount on licensing for being beta testers.

Uh, I do, and uh, I used those products on a regular basis with alpha and beta copies of XPSP2.

Course, it pays when you're a Microsoft Premier Partner at the office.

@aristotle-dude, you really no how to go off topic and make yourself looks like a pratt while doing so.

Just because a patch is only being distributed on request does not mean its not been officially released. Its a safe and prudent method of getting a fix out when, because of the time frame it may still have a few glitches, had it been a patch only available to beta testers then its not official, if a member of the general public can get it direct from MS it means its official but carries a note of caution becuase they themselves are not sure of its safety.

How would I test this as I don't want to apply the patch if I don't need it

SYMPTOMS
On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2), programs that connect to IP addresses that are in the loopback address range may not work as you expect. For example, you may receive an error message that says that you cannot establish a connection.
CAUSE
This problem occurs if the program connects to a loopback address other than 127.0.0.1. Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) prevents connections to all IP addresses that are in the loopback address range except for 127.0.0.1.

if u're wondering whats the cause... read more on ms knowledge base article. as for me im not affected (yet).

Is this a reworked patch or the same exact one? Because I tried this patch before and it locks up my system causing me to hard boot and then after boot, my entire internet and tcpip files are completely wiped out.
Quote this comment #10.1 Posted by dhitb on 19 Sep 2004 - 03:52
The hash matches the one released in August, so for all intents and purposes it's exactly the same.

I have SP2, & the patched tcpip.sys file which gives me unlimited connections, this update replaces it, can I get the link to download the new tcpip.sys compatible & patched with this update
Quote this comment #11.1 Posted by XenonicRob on 18 Sep 2004 - 12:06
To my knowledge there aren't any versions of the patch compatible. Yet.
Quote this comment #11.2 Posted by dhitb on 19 Sep 2004 - 03:54
It's been patched since August, just Google for Tcpip.sys and you'll get lots of hits.

edit- there's a new patching feature in XP-AntiSpy under Special>Connection Limit...

here a a problem auto update doesn't work I notice yesterday 2 critical updates and I went and download them from Windows update now why did my pc download them for me? what's the point of autou[date if it doesn't download crap?

Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by NeoSigma on 18 Sep 2004 - 13:35
How do you have Auto Update set up? Do you leave your computer on 27/7? Or do you have it set up to check for updates and download them 3AM in the morning monthly/weekly/daily when your computer is not even on?
Quote this comment #12.2 Posted by Fowen on 18 Sep 2004 - 17:47
I am having the same problem as randall. My updates are scheduled to check and install every day at 3:00 am. My computer is on 24/7, but when I just went to the Microsoft website, I had a GDI update to install.
Quote this comment #12.3 Posted by Randall_Lind on 20 Sep 2004 - 03:23
it says it is set for 3am but before SP2 it would download stuff before 3am. Now that I got sp2 doesn't seem to be downloading crap. I went to windows update site and it was the GDI update I had to download cause autoupdate didn't seem to care to download it.

I leave the pc on 24/7 plug into my APC. I love my APC it rocks. People for years told me to buy one now that I did I can't believe I didn't buy it sooner.

Quite a few more of these "patches" will be required before we can roll out SP2 at work. Without this patch, anyone doing development/testing on their local machine where they are relying on the loopback device would be severely hampered by this issue.

gawd. install service packs 6 months (no sooner) after release, (for joe user) and change OS's ONLY when you upgrade your machine, (or 6 months after the release of the first service pack, whichever comes first).

yeah yeah, beta testers. some of us don't LIKE to do unnecessary tweakage. we just want to use the computer. 24/7, painlessly, without a chinese puzzle of overlapping hotfixes, service packs, and so called 'features'. m$ wants me to beta test their code on my config, mail me a check for a consultant fee. first.

More problems with Sp2 for business users:
slashdot
Looks like they released a debug build. Checking for buffer overflows should not reduce performance by this much.
