QUOTE This update helps resolve an issue where Windows Installer running on Windows XP Service Pack 2 stops responding when you install an update.
Ironic?-
#2.1 Posted by Skyfrog on 09 Oct 2004 - 09:27
- I tried to install it, but Windows stopped responding.

#6.1 Posted by RanCorX2 on 09 Oct 2004 - 10:34

- Can't wait for sp3 featuring 'SUPER SECURITY UPDATE'
-
#7.1 Posted by advancedboy on 09 Oct 2004 - 12:15
- Oh ya, the one where it has a Icicle Firewall that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to comprimise a computer. And with a Super Memory/RAM hogger...you know, cause Windows obviously DOESN'T hog enough memory -- they need a program to kill us even more.
-
#7.2 Posted by threedaysdwn on 09 Oct 2004 - 17:07
- What makes you think Windows hogs memory?
Someone has never used a Mac or Solaris system... -
#7.3 Posted by Axon on 09 Oct 2004 - 18:44
- ^^ So true. Ram is a dime a dozen right now. Stick with the times! As technology advances, it has larger requirements, its called progress
. -
#7.4 Posted by bluej21 on 09 Oct 2004 - 21:43
- ^^ Yeah, but since installing SP2 my computer uses about 30MB more RAM and feels a bit sluggish at times because of all the "options" that are now "mandatory".

- are these integrated into sp2? or are they just as a standalone components? and if it's the last, is it possible, to slipstream them into sp2?
-
#8.1 Posted by Unforgiven on 09 Oct 2004 - 14:54
- They are standalone updates released after SP2.
If you want to integrate them into SP2, use the /integrate:<fullpath> command-line switch (where <fullpath> is the path to I386 folder, i.e. C:XP)

... and within a matter of hours there is a fix out

- Remember, Microsoft doesn't release updates like this until the second Tuesday of the month on Windows Update. You can still get them from the Download Center at any time.

- Auto update and Windows update is useless since Sp2.
Microsoft must hate users cause only way users know of patches is from tech sites. Microsoft doesn't let useers know I think they should be looked in for hacking. I think Autoupdate maybe use for hacking by MS cause they never update windows with it. Why would they tell millions of people to turn it on then never issues patches via autoupdate?
I think it is a plot to hack millions of pc's. -
#16.1 Posted by chacho on 10 Oct 2004 - 14:42
- what the hell are you talking about??
autoupdate DOES work, but it accesses windows update to let you know what you need. if the patch isnt on WU yet, you won't be notified via auto updates until it is.
/took the bait. -
#16.2 Posted by shao on 11 Oct 2004 - 07:55
- if by hack you actually mean silently download security updates, and install them in an attempt at making the users' computer more stable and secure, then yes, i think you're right.
other than that you should stop watching i robot, and thinking about windows update at the same time.

- ^^ You gotta be at least 12 to post on neowin dude. Come back next year.
-
#17.1 Posted by Randall_Lind on 09 Oct 2004 - 22:14
- Why tell people to turn on autoupdate and then not use it? MS must be planning some major attack via autoupdate if you ask me.
If MS is not going to use autoupdate to update computers all I am saying is why are they telling people to turn it on? Are they planning some attack unknown to users?
It is very weird to me, -
#17.2 Posted by Dessimat0r on 09 Oct 2004 - 22:45
- Stop being ridiculous. If they did do such a thing, the world Governments and law agencies would rip them to shreds.
-
#17.3 Posted by Randall_Lind on 09 Oct 2004 - 23:15
- I am not being ridiculouse just saying they must be planning to use autoupdate for something other then updates.
-
#17.4 Posted by MegaManXcalibur on 10 Oct 2004 - 08:31
- And maybe they have aliens at Area 51 and the government plotted the assassination of JFK. Heck while we'er at it why not say the Ilumati are actualy behind every world government on the planet!
Ok but seriously getting all conspiracy theory is just plain nuts. This patch will appear on Windows Update (and be accessable via autoupdate) Tuesday. Microsoft now releases all "non-major" patches on the second Tuesday of the month. -
#17.5 Posted by Randall_Lind on 10 Oct 2004 - 19:21
- yesterday for the heck of it I checked and found Microsoft .net framework 1.1 listed as high priority two week before that MS Office GDI+.
I thought the whole point of autoupdate was to download what MS considers HIGH PRIORITY updates. Instead it doesn't download anything.
If this is not the case MS needs to come out and explain why they want people to enable a feature that is not being used. I would really like to know why they say enable and don't use it.

- Anyone know which file(s) does this update in the sytem?
Is there a way to find out which files do an update fix? -
#18.1 Posted by djeter on 11 Oct 2004 - 03:45
- The best way to figure out which files are updated is to go into your Windows directory and look for your $NtUninstallKBxxxxxx$ directory, where xxxxxx is the KB number... In this case, you'd have a $NtUninstallKB885894$ directory. You'd open that and find a folder named spuninst, which is where the patch can be uninstalled if need be. And then you have the files that are updated. In this case, you have sysmain.sdb and acspecfc.dll.
Both acspecfc.dll and sysmain.sdb are located in the Windows/AppPatch directory. This patch updates acspecfc.dll from 5.1.2600.2180 to 5.1.2600.2523. As far as sysmain.sdb, it does not have a version number.

- Well I am not to sure about the above Patch (I wasn't having that problem anyway) - it did not automatically appear on "Windows Update" - but you can manually download it from Microsoft no problem. What I do know is that there was a Patch that just came out -> "KB834707" which fixed a Critical Security Flaw in IE (Yes we are talking about the SP2 Version here) - I was very impressed however that SP2 automatically Detected it & with one Click of the Mouse on my part downloaded it & installed it Automatically. It was VERY SEEMLESS - Much better than before - tell me Linux Users - is it this easy for you (and don't give me that CRAP about Linux not having any Holes in it)!!!
I will agree with some of the other folks however - XP SP2 is still a bit BLOATED - freaking "SVCHOST.EXE" should NOT take up 30 MegaBytes on startup!!! Microsoft - hopefully you are still working on this - the question is will we see it in SP3 or in the FABLED "LongHorn" i.e. "FantasyHorn"!!!!

At present the new venture is being called "Exclaim," but this is apparently only a temporary name and is likely to be replaced before the firm starts trading. Cousens is joined in the new venture by Europlay Capital Advisers, the Los Angeles based firm which is headed by industry veterans Sean Brennan and Mark Dyne and has advised on a number of major industry deals in recent years.
It's expected that along with the Cheltenham and Manchester studios - accounting for some 160 employees - "Exclaim" will also take possession of several of Acclaim's products in development, including Interview with a Made Man and Heist.
