Advertisement (Why?)
That's right folks, the wait is almost over! Neowin is currently in the process of upgrading our existing forums to the new release of Invision Power Board!

We anticipate that Neowin.net will be unavailable for a few hours starting later today, as we migrate the existing forum database over to our brand new server. We will do our best to have things up and running as soon as possible.

Special thanks goes out to all of the dedicated administrators and moderators that have put a lot of time and effort into making this upgrade a reality.

UPDATE: A temporary IRC server has been setup so that Neowin members can keep in touch until the upgrade is complete. Join in at #Neowin on irc://neowin-irc.ath.cx or on the web here.

UPDATE 2: The Neowin forums are now offline for the duration of the update!

UPDATE 3: We are now running IPB 2.0 on the forums. Please excuse some dust while we work out bugs and get things settled.

Cont...

At present the new venture is being called "Exclaim," but this is apparently only a temporary name and is likely to be replaced before the firm starts trading. Cousens is joined in the new venture by Europlay Capital Advisers, the Los Angeles based firm which is headed by industry veterans Sean Brennan and Mark Dyne and has advised on a number of major industry deals in recent years.

It's expected that along with the Cheltenham and Manchester studios - accounting for some 160 employees - "Exclaim" will also take possession of several of Acclaim's products in development, including Interview with a Made Man and Heist.

Wee I forgot about this so the wait didnt seem that long..

Will the news section be upgraded too to fit in with the forums better? Right now with IPB 1.x and this news script, the smilies are different, and its generally lacking consistency

edit: oops.. meant to put this in a separate reply

To be exact, the upgrade process will be starting between 4 and 5 pm CET (10 / 11 pm GMT).

The process will take between 6 and 12 hours in time, during this time you will not be able to visit the forums, we will try to keep the front-page online for viewing.

I guess some Neowinians will be posting in this comments section until the forums are back...

What are the new featurs that we can expect?
#20.1 jmc777 on 10 Oct 2004 - 18:28
I'm sure the Neowin version will have a "Could you make this theme in black please" auto-reply button.

#20.4 Saadu on 10 Oct 2004 - 18:49
I totally dont get you but i think you mean forum skinning. Isnt that already available that you can select a custom predefined theme?
#20.5 jmc777 on 10 Oct 2004 - 19:40
Saadu, I was referring to XP Visual Styles. Whenever someone releases a new creation, 6/10* someone asks the author to make a black version.

*This statistic may or may not be true

There will also be multi-quote, an attachment manager, and the moderating controls will improve for the mods.

I think there is also a user ignore feature, but IMO that's not a good thing because some people may forget they ignored someone and won't always know who people are talking to if that person posts :p
#35.2 NeoTech on 10 Oct 2004 - 22:20
mutti-quote has been a much need feature IMO
#36 Danrarbc641 on 10 Oct 2004 - 18:39

How about making the current theme choosable for nostalgic sake?

Will most probably be sleeping through this transformation.

When are you guys going to be moving to ASP.NET?

Congrats on the move, I'm sure its going to be a lot of hard work.
#47.1 Goalie_CA on 10 Oct 2004 - 18:59
.. right about the time they get off their linux server
#47.2 Tekmaven on 10 Oct 2004 - 19:02
Getting rid of linux is easy

It's also very easy to run a PHP and MySQL based website on Windows Server 2003.

And, about price.. my dedicated webhost (Servermatri offers Windows Server 2003 Standard for the same price as Linux :
#47.3 acidic-e- on 10 Oct 2004 - 19:05
