After dreaming up big plans for its network of retail stores, Apple Computer is starting to think small.

The Mac maker plans to expand its network of retail outlets by creating a mini version of the Apple store. Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer confirmed on Wednesday's earnings conference call that the company plans to open six of the smaller stores.

Oppenheimer said the smaller stores will allow Apple to reach more people in more places, but did not offer many details. The company has scheduled a press briefing Thursday at one of the outlets--at a mall near Stanford University, just a stone's throw from an existing retail outlet in downtown Palo Alto, Calif.

Yup I have seen this develop. I know exactly where one of those mini me stores will open.

In Tukwila, WA @ Westfield Southcenter mall on Rainier court near the food court. Very small Apple store. Used to be Wizards of the Coast store.

IFO Apple Store is a great site for learning about Apple's Retail Stores. I visit it at least twice a week.

They need to build one in Greenville, SC. The people in the Apple dept. at CompUSA completely ignore you (which is why I bought my iPod from Apple, not them).

Now, if only they made their products cheaper, then more people would buy them!

Actually Apple have stated that they don't want to enter the budget market, the sub $800 market is something that they want nothing to do with, who would other those that want corporate accounts or to be put at the back of the store with lindows installed on their machines.

the one built into Menlo Park Mall, NJ is one of the smallest i've ever seen. No bigger than a common electronics boutique you see in malls.

This is actually what Steve spends the majority of his time on, these retail stores. Apple will be the only computer manufacturer who can survive by having retail outlets because they offer something different. Gateways biggest failure was the computer they made was no different from the ones being sold at Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. These stores are a giant step for Apple, especially these mini ones.
