If you want to work for Google, you'd better have a favorite math equation and a penchant for word problems.

Google, well-known for its search technology, is now applying its creativity to its search for new employees. The company has created mysterious billboards and two-page ads featuring word problems and now is moving into SAT territory with the Google Labs' Aptitude Test, which appeared recently in several technical magazines. "We are always interested in opportunities where we can find creative people, so we are always trying new ways to find them," said Eileen Rodriguez, a spokeswoman for Google.

The search company has gained allure from its successful--if rocky--initial public offering and its bullish stock price, which has climbed to about $145 a share on Friday from its debut at $85 in August. While the tests are a good way to winnow the influx of applicants for positions at Google, completing one does not necessarily give interviewees any extra credit, Rodriguez said. "It just helps us attract a different class of people," she said. "There are some people that complete the test that don't even want a job at Google."

Chat client: You can now use Opera to connect to IRC servers and chat in rooms or privately, send files to other users, and so forth. The chat panel lists previously visited chat rooms and contacts that are on line. Sessions: Opera lets you save a collection of open pages as a session, allowing for retrieval on later start-ups, or in the middle of another session. Opera can also be set up to start with the pages you had open when the browser was last closed. Multiple Document Interface: Opera is by default a Multiple Document Interface application, displaying multiple pages in the same application window, allowing you to resize and pose pages next to each other. However, Opera can also be made to work as a Single Document Interface application, a tabbed application, or with a combination of the Multiple and Single Document Interface, running multiple instances and windows at the same time. Skinning: The entire Opera user interface can be changed by a couple of clicks of the mouse. In addition to the default skins provided, more skins can be downloaded from My Opera. You may also change each skin's color scheme.

Well, if you can prove 1+1=/=2 then take a job @ google
#7.1 Surr3al on 15 Oct 2004 - 21:45
Proving 1 + 1 = 2 is easy, after you take a discrete math course.
#7.2 DeepThought on 15 Oct 2004 - 22:13
(to the above poster)
=/= equals "does not equal", FYI.
#7.3 Magallanes on 16 Oct 2004 - 00:25
1+1 = 10 (binary) AND 10 =/= 2 THEN 1+1=/= 2

1+1 IS MORE THAT 2 (economic viewpoint).

1+1 can be 11 rather that 2

They are looking for creativity, so anyone who gets 100% is straight off the list. Who's going to employ a freak of nature with a huge pulsating brain.

*Que idiot with no friends and can't dance who gets 100% and arrogantly claims it was easy*

#13.1 Surr3al on 15 Oct 2004 - 21:43
Yeah, google has released new ads, which is why you "swear" you seen this before.
#13.2 Post-It Note on 15 Oct 2004 - 22:31
I've seen someone scan this from a magazine more than a month ago, so technically it is old.
#13.3 chacho on 15 Oct 2004 - 23:55
(to the parent)

Obviously, most of us here haven't seen it before, you troll.
#14 nic on 15 Oct 2004 - 21:40

lol

I think that's a little hard for them.

When Google does something like this, all the HR people in the world thinks its a 'new trend' when its something an intern could have come up with in 30 mins.

This is nothing but a new version of "The Emperor's New Clothes" with Google in the lead role. Not everything Google does is 1337. new, trendy, good etc.

like you need to answer those to come up with a search engine or a web based mail site or news poller.....
google is not revolutionary they do what has aready been done. i woundn't say the search engine is any better then index server, look for keywords in a document ooohhh so hard make it scale oohhh another hard one....
only time consuming thing is indexing the web.

#17.1 kowcop on 15 Oct 2004 - 23:15
make it show what you are searching for in the first 2 pages of the search results? (this is out of 4,285,199,774 web pages) and return the results in less than a second? I think that it is pretty remarkable
#17.2 chacho on 15 Oct 2004 - 23:57
you are wayyy out of touch with what google has done to the internet buddy. if its so easy, why isnt there another google? MSN and Yahoo! are catching up a bit, but no one has become a google equal.
#17.3 trolane on 16 Oct 2004 - 01:02
federate your sql databases by the first 2 letters of the word searching for.
searches for words beginning with AA goto server_01 searches for words beginning with AB got server_02.

The key is to not process much during the search but during the indexing.
#17.4 Alpha Binary on 16 Oct 2004 - 03:31
You apparently know nothing about google indexing system. Firstly, one google query string can have up to ten words/phrases, which could be put in "quotes" or further tagged with inurl:, intitle:, site:, link:, etc. Pages are, of course, not indexed using the first letters of the body. Google also has special 'cache' servers that store results of recent searches for quick retrieval.
#17.5 trolane on 16 Oct 2004 - 10:19
you obviously know nothing of aggregating and word splitting.
#18 scottk on 16 Oct 2004 - 05:13

> TAKE TEST

You don't see a test here.

> LOOK FOR TEST

While you were looking for the test, you were eaten by a grue.
