- I know the AV is bad compared to the likes of NOD32... but for average users, its a must! Plus its FREE!

- Personally I think it's a great idea... especially the free AV. Say what you want, but AV is AV and it aint as crappy as alot of other stuff out there. The other stuff is normal MS crap but I think this is a good thing.
-
#4.1 Posted by Jstphish on 21 Oct 2004 - 19:16
- You've been able to get the AV for sometime now. Just go to http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/. Of course you can still get it by downloading this pack. Note: It's the best antivirus software I have ever used, seriously.

- To download the Windows Partner Pack applications, you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.01 or greater.
will they ever learn ? -
#7.1 Posted by leebobs on 21 Oct 2004 - 18:42
- You Also MUST HAVE:
Microsoft .Net 1.1
Microsoft .Net 1.1 SP1
Microsoft J# .Net
Microsoft DirectX 9c
Microsoft Managed DirectX 9c
For Some Software (XP Only)
Whats your point? -
#7.2 Posted by neostyle on 21 Oct 2004 - 18:51
- my point is that there are more browsers out there and i dont use ie any more for quite some time lol
-
#7.3 Posted by coolchan on 21 Oct 2004 - 22:34
- It's just there for people so that they don't whine about it's not working on their "oh I'm so 1337 because I use firefox"
It's just a basic requirement. Like some game must run on a 3GHz machine, so people won't whine about it's not working on their 1GHz machine! -
#7.4 Posted by cheesegoduk on 21 Oct 2004 - 22:45
QUOTE my point is that there are more browsers out there and i dont use ie any more for quite some time lol
So? You should still be keeping IE up to date. When its intergrated so far into the OS the way it is, you can't afford not to
-
#7.5 Posted by Stef Nighthawk on 22 Oct 2004 - 06:39
- The Partner Pack is for windows XP right?
Now, which version of IE does XP have on first install?
Does it have <5.01, euhm no it has >5.01
So they can drop the "versrion 5.01 or greater" bit
Now I don't know if the download page uses anything IE-only so I can't really say they could drop the first part too
-

- Except that I've been using stickies for years in outlook. So, the 12 or so people that own a Mac have been using stickies for 10 years...yay for them.

#14.4 Posted by Sandlot Games on 21 Oct 2004 - 21:44
- In order to run the two new Sandlot games from the Microsoft Partner Pack you MUST first GET THE MICROSOFT UPDATE FOR WINDOWS. There are required components to install there
-
#14.6 Posted by Skyfrog on 22 Oct 2004 - 07:13
- Just what exactly is the update we need? I have been to Windows Update, and according to it I have everything. I've got SP2 which includes DirectX 9.0c already, and I have the .NET Framework 1.1 and the SP1 update for it. I downloaded the MicrosoftPartnerPackPrerequisites and it listed a bunch of stuff that I already have, though I'm not sure about the J# .NET part. Isn't it a part of the .NET frameworK? Anyway I ran the update and it started downloading...something. It ran for 25 minutes and the progress bar didn't even move, and not even knowing what it is downloading is all the more frustrating. Not to mention that I really hate web installers.
Edit: It looks like the Visual J# .NET redistributable is what is needed. I'm going to download it and see if that solves the problem. If anyone else needs it here is the page:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vjsharp/downloads/howtoget/default.aspx
Edit 2: Installed that and it still doesn't work. I guess I need to download the latest DirectX redistributable also in order to get whatever the "managed directx" part is.
Edit 3: Installed managed DirectX, finally got them working.

#18.1 Posted by ir0nw0lf on 21 Oct 2004 - 21:44
- Both install and ran fine for me, P-4 2.4/800, 512MB PC-3200, XP Pro SP2, Radeon 9600 Pro. Nice little games to pass the time away while customer drives are defragging at work.
-
#19 Posted by chorpeac on 21 Oct 2004 - 20:35
- require registration?? Are you kidding me? What is this a free portal towards requiring you to pay for something?? It is beginning to sound like those free dvds that have all kinds of free software that you have to buy before you can use.

#20 Posted by Fonze on 21 Oct 2004 - 20:37
- I like how people point out that PostIt Notes have been in Mac OS for a while. Yah, I'm sure that's just what they want to do, bundle more software in Windows. A Free media player and browser packaged with Windows sounds like a great idea doesn't it? Well... we all know how that one turns out...
-
#20.1 Posted by tapo on 21 Oct 2004 - 21:02
- But "Stickies" is one of my favorite apps in the Mac OS, I use it all the time and keep it on my dock. A friend of mine (who once had a Windows machine but has since switched) loved them so much on his old computer that he even wrote a replacement for Windows (QuickNote, the name was later taken by a Mozilla project, but his was first).
I'll check out Post-It Software Notes, if it's nearly as good as Stickies, I'll love it.
But you're right Fonze, Windows does not need more crap then it already has. I'm glad it's a download and not bundled.

#21.1 Posted by snake-eyes on 22 Oct 2004 - 16:36
- Are you insane?
With all the little kiddies screaming about Windows "bloat" or that "my pink iMac did that 23 years ago!", there would be riots over this. Best thing to do is exactly what they did; make it an optional specific download so that no one can bitch about any of the nonsense they typically bitch about.

edit: what i would really like to see in this is:
1. Patchou's Messenger Plus!
2. Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel
3. Thong Nguyen's PowerMenu
4. SendTo extensions
5. How bout a decent FTP client?
6. How bout tabs on IE?

- I honestly love this kind of thing.
I'm all for linux and all, but if you really really want to, you can customize windows quite a bit.
Let's face it, there are simply more people using windows, so there must be more people out there writing sweet little programs that help make it better. You just have to be diligent, and know where to look.
oh yeah, and this "Partner Pack" is about as useful as "Windows Plus! Media Edition"

-

#28 Posted by Sandlot Games on 21 Oct 2004 - 21:43
- Managed DirectX is a new software required to run certain Programs. Its actually required to play the Sandlot Games.
Just figured out the problem.
In order to play the Sandlot Games off the Partner Pack Site you MUST first GET THE MICROSOFT UPDATE FOR WINDOWS. If anyone still has a problem playing the Sandlot Games please email support@sandlotgames.com -
#28.1 Posted by neufuse on 21 Oct 2004 - 21:52
- its not a "new software" really, but a link between managed code and the DirectX API's
-
#28.2 Posted by alpoinacan on 21 Oct 2004 - 22:27
- Hi neufuse,
Would you mind explaining a little further indepth? Please.
What caught my eye was the Microsoft Managed part of the direct" x installer.

The link currently on this page is wrong and if you follow that link many of the applications will not work correctly!

- What is the big deal? All of these (except the games) can be downloaded FREE from each of these companies sites anyway. It is not like MS is doing anyone some kind of favor.
MS giving away freeware....thanks soooo much. -
#30.1 Posted by Miran on 22 Oct 2004 - 02:25
- So they should be giving away non-free software? There here to make money.. not give stuff away. They are simply trying to perform a service for uninformed users, who never knew that all those apps already existed.
-
#30.2 Posted by snake-eyes on 22 Oct 2004 - 16:31
- Some people don't have the type of pathetic life that you apparently have, which allows you to scrounge all over the internet finding the best free applets and toys to make your computer experience (which probably never ends, I'd wager) perfect. They bundled up some useful little apps and made them available in one nice, tidy download. People like you would probably complain about a free lunch as well...grow up and find something substantial to complain about.

- Hmm, interesting and weird thing to do by MS...
Unfortunately, I didn't need any of this, the PostIt thing sounds more useful in general, but anyone can of course have downloaded a program for Windows for that around a decade ago, and there are probably hundreds of freeware apps for it already.
I also don't get why they market the Google Deskbar for Google?

- Well I use etrust antivirus at work. ITs awesome. uses way less resourses then a lot of the others including norton and mcafee. I know i have tried them before going to etrust. You can have it automatically set it to download the updates. Wich I am pretty sure you cant do in norton(you have to run live update) . you can set if you want it to scan out going, incoming,or all files,. ITs an awesome program and i cant beleive its being given away for free.

#39 Posted by snake-eyes on 22 Oct 2004 - 16:27
- Some children will simply complain about anything, won't they?
Bill Gates could drive a brand-new Porsche Boxter to some pimple-faced choads house, present him him with the keys, then have a Playmate of the year give the choad h*ad, and people on this site or slashdot would complain about the color of the car or that the Playmate dragged her teeth. Get a life. Why bitch about something -free-?

#40 Posted by adamwwe on 22 Oct 2004 - 18:55
- Post-it notes? Two words: Windows Notepad. Oh, and Microsoft Word, send yourself an email and use MSN Calendar are also phrases that come to mind.
Can anybody say redundant?
You no longer need your browser open to search Google? REDUNDANT. Who doesn't have a browser in use when online(You'll no doubt need a live connection to retrieve results)?
It uses a mini-viewer that closes automatically when you're done? How does it know when you're done? Either its not automatic, or it shuts down on its own, which could interrupt your work. And a mini-viewer? We have a viewer. Its called Internet Explorer. Hate to sound REDUNDANT, but...

The Partner Pack is the ultimate application package for your Windows XP PC. Install this package and you will be able to play new games and have more fun, explore the internet in new ways, keep in touch and share information with friends and family, better protect your PC and do more with tools and desktop utilities.
Notable items included in the Partner Pack:
Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager
If you share a computer, USB flash drives are a great way to store personal information. USB Flash Drives are also a good great option for saving information and share it with others. When you have many things to save and share but you have a limited number of USB Flash Drives, you will need to backup the information and restore it when needed. This is where the Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager application can help you. The Microsoft USB Flash Drive Manager will help you backup and restore presentation, pictures, songs and applications from and to USB Flash Drive devices and take them with you. The application can also help you to classify and name USB Flash Drives images (for instance "My network configuration" or "The pictures for my grandma") and lets you see this name whenever the USB Flash Drive is plugged into the computer.
Google Deskbar
Google Deskbar™ lets you search using Google right from your desktop, even when your browser isn’t running. Search from the Google Deskbar search box located within your Windows taskbar. Or type the Ctrl+Alt+G keyboard shortcut to jump to the Google Deskbar instantly. Search results appear in a “mini-viewer” window that closes automatically when you’re done. This lets you find facts, check spelling or look up URLs without interrupting your work on an email or a document.
Post-it Software Notes
What happens when you cross a Post-it® Note with a computer? Post-it® Software Notes - the classic yellow note designed for your PC! This digital version of 3M's famous canary yellow® note is perfect for quick reminders on your computer desktop so you never miss a meeting, event or thought.
PayPal Payment Request Wizard
Using the Payment Request Wizard for Outlook and Outlook Express, you can add PayPal payment buttons to your email messages. When your customers click the button, it takes them to the PayPal website to complete the transaction. You don't even need a website!
Other items include: 2 new XP bundled-type games, Microsoft Time Zone, PhotoSite, a 12-month subscription to eTrust Anti-Virus, and Onfolio Express.
