For Dell and AMD, a tantalizing question

ROUND ROCK, Texas--Will Dell take the AMD plunge?

One of the chief questions in the PC market for the next couple of years will be whether the computer maker will incorporate Opteron or Athlon chips from Advanced Micro Devices into its systems. Intel's release of chips that can provide a similar 32-bit/64-bit functionality--one of the key factors of Opteron's popularity--has likely tabled the issue for now, according to several analysts.

But there are other factors at work, too. AMD is gaining customers in the corporate world--20 of the Fortune 100 have installed Opteron servers. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has also shown that its technology can equal and even best Intel's. Dell certainly has good things to say about AMD. In interviews with CNET News.com editors and reporters at the company's headquarters here last week, numerous executives extolled the strides the Intel rival has made in designing and manufacturing server and desktop chips.

intels desktop 64 solution is garbage its like an emulator. this is a good thing for people to understand that there is nothing wrong wit an amd chip. i work at retail an i kno how many people come up to me sayin i only want an intel an i ask why an they say cuz someone told them intel is faster

This would be great for AMD; further validation that their chips can and do compete with Intel's.

It doesn't make sense for Dell to switch to AMD. Let's face it, they sell computers mostly to people who don't know about AMD or people who could care less about which processor they have. Right now Intel's Pentium 4 is more easilly recognize, by the common public, as the processor of choice. I guess it wouldn't hurt if Dell let people choose AMD, but no way they will drop Intel and go solely with AMD.

All the more reason to introduce AMD powered computers. Lower cost speaks volumes.

It's not so much a matter of whether they would sell well or not (and they would sell well!), it's a matter of if/when Intel would punish Dell for offering systems with AMD CPUs in them. Dell gets some very very good deals on all things Intel, that would be in jeopardy if they start buying AMD chips.

Most people feel that if would be a rather frigid day in he-double-l before Dell offers AMD (again).

Yup you know what you are talking about. A lot of nonsense posts here about dell using only amd which is rediculous. You said it right and what you said is the case. however dell has never sold amd in the past so they could not offer them again if they have never offerd in the past.

Everything else was perfect though

Meh Dell's products are so overpriced, I feel sorry for the common computer noob who pays for there stuff and think they are getting a good deal...

are you serious, i bet you cant find a maker like Dell that sells computers at their price with their warranty and their services and still maitains such a low price on computers. Give me a dell anyday over an HP or Compaq, and dont compare them to alienware or the falcon series because we all know those are high end rigs which obviously beat Dell in price and performance.

On another note, it wouldnt be so bad for intel to sell computers with AMD on them, if they were to market the whole process rite, and im pretty sure they can. Im an intel fan myself, but choice never hurt anyone....

If they go AMD, they'll sure have to rethink their shroud CPU cooling system.

FFS! new AMD chips run cooler than the newer Intel chips, so don't go spreading that bollocks

Fully agree. Prescotts still have heating problems and dissipate over 100 watts of power.
