Thanks to Mr. Peabody for posting this in the Neowin BPN.

Search giant Google said Wednesday that it has acquired Keyhole, a company specializing in Web-based software that allows people to view satellite images from around the globe.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced, but Google said that it has cut pricing for Keyhole's flagship software package, Keyhole 2 LT, from $69.95 to $29.95.

The acquisition of Keyhole underscores Google's efforts to widen its search capabilities beyond basic Web page results, as competition in the search sector heats up. One example of the company's growth strategy is a feature that lets surfers see excerpts from some books. The company began testing the service last year and incorporated it into its main search engine earlier this month. Google also recently unveiled Google Desktop Search, a thin-client application that lets people retrieve e-mail, Microsoft Office documents, AOL chat logs and a history of Web pages previously viewed, all via a Web browser.

Google faces competition in the Web search arena from a variety of sources, including Amazon.com and a host of new, smaller companies.

Keyhole, founded in 2001, offers software that lets Internet users view geographic images collected from satellites and airplanes. The technology relies on a multi-terabyte database of mapping information.

Why does Google reduce the price of all its software? Are they really making a ton of $$$ on advertising? They bought Picasa and starting giving it away for free and now they slash the price of this software.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I think its great! I'm just curious about their strategy.

They are hemmoraging cash with adsense, so yes, advertising is where its at. They doubled their quarterly estimate last quarter.

Does that really matter?

Anyway, I love Google too. Everything they do, they do very well. And I can't wait to see what comes out of this acquisition.

Like I said before, if it takes Google this long to do a simple webmail, we'll see a Browser from them in 2008, and an OS from them sometime in the late 2020s.

Given Yahoo's recent push for the Yahoo Local feature, I think it's fairly obvious what Google is attempting to do here. By overlaying information about shops, restaurants, banks, etc. over satellite images, you've got something to match and exceed Yahoo's Local implementation.

The Google OS is probably a bit farfetched. Developing an OS is just an invitation for trouble. Instead by combining Google Desktop Search with Orkut (networking) and Picasa (photo sharing), you're getting a powerful, integrated desktop utility suite all of which serves to benefit their primary revenue driver - ads. Google is in the business of selling advertising not software. The more you use anything with a Google logo on it, the more they earn from ad buyers.

Google's mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Keyhole's technology and products are an excellent addition to our efforts to do that. We do not have any announced plans regarding how this technology will integrate with our current products and services

If anything it would be the other way around. The more appearling they make themselves the more likely they'll be assimilated.
