The agency in charge of administering Internet addresses has entered final negotiations for implementing two new top-level domains, .travel and .post. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) on Wednesday said it will begin technical and commercial negotiations to create and run the two new domains, a process that could take months.

ICANN is considering creating 10 top-level domains (TLDs) to augment the nearly 250 current TLDs already in use, from the famous .com TLD to scores of lesser-known country TLDs such as .uk. In addition to .travel and .post, proposals for new TLDs include .xxx, .jobs, .asia and .eu. The status of the eight other applicants is still pending, the group said in a statement.

The .museum TLD should change to .mus , so museums would actually consider using it. And I always thought .info and .biz were dumb. I don't like all of the new ones listed here, though there's obvious reasons to have .xxx .

Problem is, So many people think "ahh the internet, .com .net .org" that few companies would only use a ".blah" tld

eg a porn site is more likly to use .com than .xxx since people think .com = internet

Now if ony all the porn sites moved to that TLD. then it could be damm easy to block them out

Only way that would happen is if a law forced them to

there are already rules on who can register .org , .gov , or .edu , rules on who can register country specific TLDs, and respect for copyrights in domain names. so it might be possible without law

Yeah, a law needs to be passed, and all violators would be subject to a truly heinous fine of $10,000 per day. That would quickly weed out the porn from the educational and support sites.

Yeah i dont think it would be unreasonable, it would be like tv and movie ratings or v-chips. It wouldn't really censor and theres no reason to since internet isn't a broadcast medium. i hope the idea wouldnt get stonewalled by people who hate govt involvement. its not as if rules arent enforced anyway by companies that give out domain names

Many Americans (or at least a lot of people I know) have never heard of the .co.uk TLD, or have only seen it once or twice.

But not many realise that .UK is a TLD on the same level as .COM (.*)

and .CO.UK is a SLD by the way, on the same level as something like .NEOWIN.NET (.*.TLD)
