It's been one long journey folks, but the wait is finally over. Mozilla has just posted the final builds of Firefox 1.0 to their FTP servers for everyone to grab. Firefox 1.0 comes with a whole host of new features; we asked Ben Goodger, Firefox developer, what he was most proud of.

"Overall, the group of people that got us here. But as far as features and code goes, I guess the Extension and Migration systems. They were both large and interesting challenges in their own rights, and I learned a huge deal in the process of creating them."

Firefox 1.0 was compiled early on the morning of November 9th, and included a change in the CVS branding value of the browser. Ensure that you've downloaded the final build from one of the mirrors listed below, as many sites are falsely offering "nightly" Firefox builds as the real 1.0 release. Be sure to stay with Neowin throughout the day as we keep you up to speed on Firefox 1.0 launch happenings.

Updates:

The majority of servers have been mirrored. Check here for some additional download mirrors if you run into one that hasn't been updated yet. Mozilla has also updated their browser start page. Check here for a screenshot, and view the real thing (hosted at google) here. Mozilla.org has been updated with information on the release here. CNN is featuring Firefox on their technology portal. Join in on the official Firefox 1.0 launch webcast and discussion from 2-7PM PST today.

Have you just downloaded Firefox? Want some advice on installing, setting up, or just curious about the browser? Read our updated Firefox guide. We've got great tips and tweaks, as well as a list of useful extensions to get you started, and help you to get the most out of Firefox.

Other
Ben Goodger has updated his Blog with some interesting stuff concerning the 1.0 release. Read the whole entry here.

This day has come a lot later than any of us originally planned, but that's the way software goes. I've learned a lot about a huge number of things in the process, have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of different people about their experiences with the software, etc. It's been a long road but we're finally here. No software is perfect, we did not fix every bug, implement every feature, but what we did do was create what we believe to be the best browser around. I want to thank you all again for the support over the past few years.

We also asked Ben what the progress was after 1.0 :

"After 1.0 we plan to resync our development work with the Mozilla trunk so that we can immediately pick up the great work that's been going on with Gecko since we've been away, continue our HIG compliance efforts for MacOS X, improve existing systems and plan for the next major release. The first interim release will be 1.1 in or around March 2005. ".

Please use the torrents because the servers are hammerd

The Official Torrents

You will max out your download speed with the torrents.

no, only www.mozilla.org is hammerd
ftp.mozilla.org (which is mirrored) is still available (and doing pretty well) because you get a different ip for this server everytime you connect to it

just goto http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/fir...ox/releases/1.0 and grab it from there.

btw: there are tons of official mozilla mirrors out there

use one of them to get the download counted

Quote this comment #5.1 Posted by Chestah on 09 Nov 2004 - 08:54
Wouldn' this ruin the count for Mozilla! Then lots of downloads via the bittorrent network would go untracked in the final count?

So now it's more a matter of pride over getting good software out to the masses?

Normally i would say its not important but FF is going after big PR at the moment and they need to show some big numbers to get noticed.

No. People can spread this software in other ways. They've NEVER said anything along the lines of "please don't spread this via private mirrors". As opposed to Microsoft and their free software.

This might changed in a few hours. I would say be patient. Being are stomping on the Firefox website right now. You can tell because it takes so long to access it. If your patient enough, it will open. It opened for me after about a minute.

...as of 7/11/04.

Talk about standards! People can't even agree on how to write this short version of the date!

In some places (primarily Europe), today's date is 9/11/04, but in others (primarily the US), it's 11/9/04. Usually not a problem until you come across a date written in this format and you don't know where it originated.

A minor thing, really. But you Europeans had better hope that our Fearless Leader, G. Dubbya, doesn't find out about this! He might declare your format a Wording of Mass Deception and invade!

Hey! I'm just kidding about an invasion! Dubbya doesn't read, so he'll never find out about it himself. And since his advisors would find it impossible to explain it to him in a way he could understand, you guys are safe!
Quote this comment #31.8 Posted by Quick Reply on 09 Nov 2004 - 15:20
Actually the European/Australian format should be written has DD/MM/YY and the US format should be written as MM-DD-YY. (Notice the - and /).

been living in the US for my entire life and I've never seen anyone write it MM-DD-YY, everyone writes mm/dd/yy with the slash not the dash, dashes in dates are very uncommon in the US

Although..... I would like to see the IE feature of 'hitting' and image and directly have the opportunity to save it, instead of right clicking.....

Totally addicted I guess to firefox now....

Does anyone else have this problem?

When I go to Tools Downloads, Extensions, or Themes, my CPU jumps up pass 70% when I move my mouse.

The only reason I ask this is because it’s irritating when I’m trying to configure an extension or choose a theme and my mouse cursor is jumping around because of the high CPU usage.

This has been happening since RC1.

Yeah I fresh installed and before I installed an extension it did it. I was thinking it was an extension doing it but it's not.

That's the only problem I have with Firefox other than that it's a great browser.

It's HIGHLY NOT recommended that you just install right over an old version. Do uninstall, your profile folder is stored seperate from the program itself, so the uninstall willl leave the profile folder alone. You can then proceed to install 1.0.

I doubt this will be necessary anymore though. This was because the profile config wasn't stable in pre-releases, but now even extensions will work well when e.g. Firefox 1.1 is released! (they've said up until 2.0) Probably upgrading the program too.
Quote this comment #47.5 Posted by BananaMan on 09 Nov 2004 - 13:15
If you're previous install is one of the 1.x nightlies, 1.0PR, 1.0RC1 or RC2, you should be fine to just install and use your existing profile (but NOT installing on top of your Firefox application directory).

OK....someone persuade me to switch from Mozilla suite. Didn't think you could.
I really don't see why people use Firefox and Thunderbird when they could just use the Mozilla suite!

But, I think the release of v1.0 is a good thing for the internet browing community in general, the more people using browsers other than IE the better.

Mozilla.org is really slow though, isn't it? Although that's to be expected.
Quote this comment #48.1 Posted by hindred on 09 Nov 2004 - 10:27
The Mozilla suite to me seemed boring and old, FF and TB are fresh and cutting-edge.
