Waiting for a Google browser is becoming more like "Waiting for Godot." Not only has Google's top executive denied that the company is developing a Web browser, but the Mozilla Foundation more recently has quashed speculation that it is working with the search leader. In an interview with eWEEK.com ahead of Tuesday's Firefox launch, Mozilla President Mitchell Baker denied rumors that the Mountain View, Calif., foundation was working with Google on a browser based on Firefox or its Gecko rendering engine.

"The code base is open for companies to do what they wish to do, but we're not working with Google on a special browser," Baker said. "We are not working on a Google browser." As an open-source project, Mozilla's code base is available to other organizations and companies for building browsers and Web-based applications. Most notably, America Online Inc.'s Netscape Communications released its Netscape 7.2 browser based on Mozilla's underlying technology.

Ben Goodger has updated his Blog with some interesting stuff concerning the 1.0 release. Read the whole entry here.

This day has come a lot later than any of us originally planned, but that's the way software goes. I've learned a lot about a huge number of things in the process, have had the opportunity to talk to a lot of different people about their experiences with the software, etc. It's been a long road but we're finally here. No software is perfect, we did not fix every bug, implement every feature, but what we did do was create what we believe to be the best browser around. I want to thank you all again for the support over the past few years.

We also asked Ben what the progress was after 1.0 :

"After 1.0 we plan to resync our development work with the Mozilla trunk so that we can immediately pick up the great work that's been going on with Gecko since we've been away, continue our HIG compliance efforts for MacOS X, improve existing systems and plan for the next major release. The first interim release will be 1.1 in or around March 2005. ".

From what I've been reading, it's no longer thought Google is working on a browser, but rather Extensions for Firefox.

Where?

I personally believe gbrowser.com is a safety registration so they don't get hijacked in the future if they do decide to make one. The cooperation between Google and Mozilla mentioned in the bugzilla bug (which partially started this rumor) might have been www.google.com/firefox.

what about the gbrowser.com domain?

Well, Google DID make a special "Start Page" for Firefox. The start page is hosted by Google and everything, and Google has put links to all sorts of Mozilla stuff.

yeah; but i'm more interested as to what they will actually do with www.gbrowser.com - none of this hype because providing a googled firefox will not help us other than promote firefox; which gg is already doing.
