Passwords will soon be a thing of the past, replaced by biometric and smart-card technology, Bill Gates reiterated on Tuesday.

Speaking at the Microsoft IT Forum in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Microsoft chair predicted that people will soon rely on alternative means of authenticating their identity. "A major problem for identity systems is the weakness of passwords," Gates said. "Unfortunately, with the type of critical information (protected by) these systems, we aren't going to be able to rely on passwords. Moving to biometric and smart cards is a wave that is coming, and we see our leading customers doing this."

Gates added that Microsoft plans to issue smart cards to its employees for accessing the company building and their computers. The system will be based on Microsoft's .Net technology. "In time, we will completely replace passwords," Gates said. "Having the .Net capability, we are very excited to see smart cards moving into this framework." Smart cards contain a microchip that stores data. They have been used in cell phones and for online banking, among other things. Biometric technology is based on recognizing people's unique physical characteristics, such as facial structure or fingerprints, to authenticate identity.

Multi Replace offers a number of nifty search and replace features. For example, all replacements can be limited only to files stored in a specified folder/subfolder or only to files of certain type(s). It is also possible to exclude files from being processed. There is even an automatic backup option that makes it possible to revert back to old files in case anything goes wrong. More importantly, there are several choices for replacement actions - replace with, replace between, insert before, insert after or delete. File type masks, case sensitivity, customized replacement rules and batch or one-by-one processing options are available as well. The program builds itself into Explorer's context menu and is always readily vailable. For added convenience, all processed files can be exported to a specified output older. The replacement settings can be saved for future processing. Multi Replace is 100% FREE to download and try. Get it now and you won't go back to your older, slower, one-file-at-a-time solution.

... until you lose the smartcard. Insert bureaucratic delay in replacement here.

And so far, biometrics are not terribly accurate, and Microsoft's own biometric-enabled keyboard doesn't work with other Web broswers (article here ). Heck, it even comes with the following disclaimer:

"is not a security feature and is intended to be used for convenience only. It should not be used to access corporate networks or protect sensitive data, such as financial information."

He actually never said that in that sense. It's always taken out of context

"No one will need more than 637 kb of memory for a personal computer." and "640kb ought to be enough for anybody."

* Notes: Two variants of the same quote. Attributed to him in 1981 when designing DOS's conventional memory limit as ten times the amount in his computer; Gates has refuted this quote and mentions that it is always provided without a source.

Another famous Bill Gates "I say it so it must be true" speech. There was a time when his speeches could be construed as visions of the future of computing. However, these days, it's more prudent to see them as "here's the technology we want you to buy into as we're running out of ways to make more money" speeches.

He's simply stating what he thinks the future will hold, and what Microsoft will work towards.

No, governments will soon rely on alternative means of authenticating the populaces' identity c.f. David Blunkett and the oh-so-great get-it-or-face-a-£2500-fine ID cards in 2007. And that'll be £37 for it ta very much. And no, you can't see what is on it, but the English Tourist Board can...

at least a password is you're own head, what happens if someone staels you're card! Biometrics is also very dodgy i've heard that witha digital camera and some skilllllllz with computer graphics you can make pretty much anyones eye. Not to mention fingerprints..bluetack. The ammount of people who have password problems is VERY small to the ammount getting there information stolen becasue of M$'s faulty OS..get you're priorities straight..bitches.

So now instead of just needing to steal your password all they have to do is cut off your hand
