This week, Microsoft (Redmond Campus) is hosting a gathering of enthusiasts who publish Web sites supporting the Windows community. The Featured Community Summit is an unprecedented opportunity for product team engagement between teams from Microsoft Windows and site owners of the most popular sites that support Windows technologies. The site owners are being treated to a first-hand experience of every nitty, gritty detail of the newest Windows products and discuss with the team members that shape that vision for their team.

At the kickoff dinner on Monday night, I spoke with folks from Neowin.net, ActiveWin, and TweakXP, among others. These are some of the most popular Windows XP sites on the Web. I asked each of them how and why they started publishing their Web sites. Nobody said "venture capital."

The common thread in all of their answers: They thought they could do some good. It's an amazing and unique aspect of the Windows community that so many people are dedicated to helping other users. If you're a Windows enthusiast, looking for information to help you solve issues or have more fun with your PC, these related community sites are the place to go.

Foundation: As something of a treat for players, we’ve decided to make the unlockable multiplayer map, Foundation, available to everyone. Previously, to unlock Foundation, it was necessary to both complete the game and activate a “training event” on the final level. We reckon that was too tough for most, and wanted very much to share Foundation – inspired by our old shoot ‘em up Marathon – with Halo 2 players everywhere. Once you have the autoupdate, you’ll be able to play this rarely seen arena map with anyone you wish. And be sure to try a game of four-team CTF on this map. It's a hoot!

I had a great time with everyone at the conference. If you guys look at the table right next to the while column, my seat is the empty one with the laptop open . I'm not in my seat, because I was the one who took this picture.

I don't *really* care that you took it, but next time asking if you can use my picture would be nice

I had dinner with neobond and redmak last night.. very cool dudes.

only lists neowin on the bottom!

deserves better

Look again. Neowin is listed twice: once in a prominent position near the top under "Featured Communities", and again in the alphabetical listing under "All Related Communities"—which is only near the bottom because "N" is rather far down in the alphabet.

they must have read my comment and changed it. i see no other explanation
#6.3 Octol on 18 Nov 2004 - 15:01
Your power is great, O Mighty One!

How about suggesting steep discounts on Microsoft software for Neowin members?

And people still contest that Neowin is a general tech site over being a Windows one.

Yes, however for anyone looking more at the content than the domain name, it's not really surprising. Not too long below this article, you'll see one about unscracthable DVD's, and there are a bunch of non-Windows forums as well.

Oh, come on, really. So much narrowness has to cause real pain.
