- If microsoft can't trump google with any features google dosen't already have, they will never succeed. MS knows this too.

- Even if it can do more in terms of features they will still have to top the massive awareness that Google has, its a brand name and a well received one at that.

- somehow i kinda think its the other way around. As long as microsoft can make its search as good as google's, it'll succeed.

- You're wrong here - microsoft is identified as the desktop leader - NOT the search leader. Google is ubiquitous. Google is a verb in the english language at this point. Microsoft, at this point, is facing an uphill battle. When google decides to come out with a browser (if it does) or an operating system (even bigger if) then it will be fighting the same battle that microsoft is fighting. Microsoft = Operating System. Google = Search Engine. Trying to expand out of this role is hard for either of these companies. Look at microsoft's trouble at trying to get universal adoption of windows media player, or how trends seem to show that it is losing its hold on the browser market. The examples go on and on. Nice try though, microsoft groupie ho (necessary flame bait, right?)!

- netscape was pretty high and mighty back in the day as well (can't remember the exact percentage of the market, but I think it was in the 90s). Bottom line, whenever microsoft tries its hand at something, it can usually put forward not only a formidable product, but one that will destroy any possible competition (windows,ie,office, etc)

- I would argue that MS didn't dominate the browser market by competing or even by trying to produce a better product, the reason that IE has the share today is because the bundled it with the OS.
However they can do much the same thing with MSN search by making it the default homepage on every Windows system sold both retail and OEM, they can enforce this through their licensing much in the same way the threatned to revoke any OEM's license if they took the IE icon off the desktop or replaced it with another browsers icon. With that said Google is now a household name and any survey would show that the first name that pops into the head of a computer user of any skill when talking about internet searching would be Google. -

- Comical...
Tell that to Lotus, Wordperfect, Novell, IBM, Palm and all of the other competitors that held large market share before MS ate their lunch. Say what you will about the Browser but MS has shown incredible aptitude at taking down market leaders. Google will be no different... MS will be able to bury them eventually because they won't quit and can see the value in search. Its a big deal and something they will invest heavily in.
Bottom line we all win because competition is a good thing. I have no loyalty to any search engine I just want the best results quickly. -

- I think ms will succeed in winning market share the same way it did with ie. it will make a product that is good enough and bundle it so it will be the default thing people use. Most people don't know enough or care enough to change the default search engine. look how often MSN search is being used now and it is not even compairable to google.

ive always used msn search because google doesnt filter out its results, for example:
your searching for cow and there is a site that has a forum with a user called cow...google will show that as one of its search results. Another thing is that if the site is about chickens and has one cow written in it...google will show that...[im obsessed with cows and chickens
]
google search is definately better than msn, but it should add some filtering in to remove rubbish search enteries... -

- I search for "porn" on Google.com, I get 222,000,000 results right away.
I search for "porn" on search.msn.com, I get a nag page and an extra link I have to click on to see 841,202 results.
MSN search isn't ready for the average home user.

- Sure it's nice to see Microsoft trying new things, but I still think that they should spend most of their efforts on Windows. I'm starting to get sick of seeing Microsoft trying to do everything. They should do what most companies do and focus on a specific market.

- agree they should first focus on windows and especifically IE

- You can bet your bottom dollar that MS will be tying the next IE and Longhorn into their search engine even more than they do presently to give it even greater exposure. Who needs to build great search-engines when you have the most popular OS to peddle your wares from.

- If branding="Microsoft" then
print = "Omgz ffs m$ sty mking crappy windwz lololz"
else
*fail, as there's no line here in a flamer"
End If
Anyways, I think it's good Microsoft starting a decent search engine. Gives Google competition, and we win out of it no matter what.

- Why is these news posted here again?
Seems to suck as much as last time you posted this.
Image Search still FUBAR and so on...
I really hope MS can fix that mess, Google need some competition and pressure, it would be the best for the users.

In the past decade, searching the Web has grown from an academic experiment to a multibillion-dollar business. Microsoft has not been a player, being content to outsource its MSN Search service to rival Yahoo! Now, Microsoft is offering a homegrown search engine, but, despite some nice touches, it has a long way to go to challenge industry leader Google.

A public trial of the new service launched on Nov. 11, and it has some very rough edges that suggest it was pushed out before it was quite ready. Still, it's a big improvement over the old Yahoo-powered MSN Search, which is what you still find at the standard MSN search page and the MSN Toolbar. To use the new service, you must go to beta.search.msn.com. There you will see a simple, clean search form. You type in your search term and click either the "search" or "near me" button. The first runs a standard Web search. The second restricts the scope to a city or region.

"Natural challenges with finalizing all the key features and localization issues across worldwide territories have led to the difficult choice of pushing back the release date," SCEA said in a statement, "in order to ensure that Gran Turismo 4 lives up to the exacting standards of the 36 million-plus fans worldwide that have purchased previous versions."
The delay leaves egg on the face of Sony, who only last week held a high profile party in Tokyo to celebrate the "completion" of the game, and which previously removed the much-vaunted online functionality from the title in order to ensure that it came out in time for Christmas.
There's some speculation that this fresh delay - which may also have a knock-on impact on the launch date of the European version, which had already been delayed into Q1 2005 - will give the firm time to reintegrate the online component, but Sony has so far not commented on this possibility, and is still officially planning to launch a separate online-enabled Gran Turismo product later next year.
