AMD has an updated processor roadmap available for your viewing pleasure. The roadmap details AMD's processor plans through next year, but with the timeline segmented into six-month blocks, it's hard to draw any firm conclusions on release dates.

Despite its ambiguity, the roadmap reveals a few interesting tidbits, most notably that dual-core Opteron and Athlon 64 FX processors won't arrive until the second half of 2005. Dual-core replacements for AMD's FX-less Athlon 64s aren't listed at all, suggesting that they may not debut until 2006. The roadmap also indicates that single-core, 90-nano Opteron processors will arrive before the end of this year in 1xx, 2xx, and 8xx flavors.

Who promised you?

AMD said there would be a 3 Ghz Athlon 64 by Quarter 4 but then backed away because Intel canceled 4 Ghz P4.

yeah will the athlons ever reach 3G!? they seem to be completley satisfied over at AMD with sticking with lower clock speeds and shoving all these benchmarks in our faces! this pisseess me off!

Who gives a crap about clock speed...as long as it preforms great in the real-world.

seriously if you care about clock speeds, get an Intel. Of course it won't perform as well as the lower clocked AMD. That would solve your problem of just shoving benchmarks in your face with pointless clock speeds instead.

I went to AMD's Fall Tech Tour back on Nov 16th - Saw most of this there. The dual-core hangup with the Opertons they had was die size. Now that they've gotten it down to 90nm, they can fit both cores on the CPU. With the 130nm they couldn't. The really nice feature though is the fact that you should be able to take a dual-core Opteron and replace a current single-core Opteron, assuming that the motherboard supports it (some may require a BIOS update, some may not support it, YMMV)

That and they're working on building a second Fab plant in Germany, which I want to say was on track to open in 2006. That, and the Opteron was kicking the Xeon's behind in benchmarks done by HP - someone who sells both. Single-core single-CPU Opteron box beat a 2-CPU Xeon. Was quite funny.

But yeah...AMD is definitely taking the forefront of the server and gaming markets, for sure.

curr i have a celeron but just becoz my amd's mb is broken and my father (greetz btw... -.-*) wanted me to buy a new pc instead of buying a new mb -> more secure he said... "amd's are built cheap"... wtf... well...
