Philadelphia children will soon have a glimpse into what could be the future of public education thanks to a joint project between Microsoft and the School District of Philadelphia. Microsoft representatives were on hand earlier this month to break ground on this new project, slated to open in 2006.

The "School of the Future" is being lauded by Philadelphia politicians as a way to improve quality of life for its citizens. "This project will be a national example of what can be accomplished when the community, school district and private sector combine efforts for the city's overall good," said John Street, Mayor of Philadelphia. Students will use smart cards for many of their daily activities, and will be able to connect wirelessly to the schools internal network. Teachers will have less paperwork, as everything from grades to student testing will be handled digitally.

I wish my college would try something like this. We're stuck with a Novell network that takes nearly 30 seconds to validate that my username is correct

lol. the way you make it sound.. 30 WHOLE seconds.. omg ima die... seriously thats not long.... .... btw my school is going to switch to all laptops next year instead of books. (itll be easier on the kids and schools for not having to hold so many books) BUT i wont be tehre because im a senior this year and they are doing it all next year, with teachers being implemented in the next semester (jan) this sucks.

30 seconds compared to 1 second is a big difference
#1.3 Sn1p3t on 30 Nov 2004 - 04:11
No, it's longer than 30 seconds. You type in your username and hit tab to go to the password field. That takes nearly 20 seconds. You type in your password and hit enter, 5 second wait. It runs nearly two dozen scripts, as well as annoying reminders for stuff. At least 20 more seconds.

We then have a start menu loader that loads shortcuts to a whole set of icons. You don't have to wait around for that, but it does give you a message box when it's done. Usually around 3 minutes.

Oh well

30 seconds! That's nothing. The win2k computer (they're P4's) at my skool takes 10 minutes to finish logging in. For some reason, winlogon keeps taking 100% CPU time and I can't do any real work till that's done. Sometimes, I'll just give up, reset the comp and head over to a unix lab.

eminem213486 - Do you live in Cobb County, GA? Because our school board is doing just that!
#1.6 SkaterAustin on 30 Nov 2004 - 13:38
HA! 30 seconds?!?! it takes my school novell system least 2 min.. it validates with contexless login, then it final loads my user name, then its gotta to apply the user policy, then it applies the security policy..BLAH just get win 2k3 server and workstation it will fix everything

"Students of the future" will all know and have seen BSoDs.
#3.1 Dayon on 30 Nov 2004 - 03:33
Look. It's getting old.

Since the death of the 9x operating systems, BSODs very rarely occur.

They really only happen when you have faulty hardware or are using the broken/incorrect drivers.

Ethereal causes BSOD on our Windows XP machines at work. So BSOD are still common with Windows XP.

Then that means your admin didnt correctly configure the machines. Ive seen a BSOD on my PC only 2 times and it was Creative's faulty drivers fault.

And you know this how?
#4.2 family guy on 30 Nov 2004 - 02:54
Ours was. Over $40,000 in electronic equipment stolen. Since they will obviously have all this tech. people know, it becomes a target

I wouldn't mind this at our school though. I think it would be nice
#4.3 Fantmx on 30 Nov 2004 - 18:33
Not to mention all of the kids that think it's cool to destroy stuff like this for no reason at all.
#5 darkblackcrow on 30 Nov 2004 - 03:03
I know it will create a lot of arguments about socialising and so on, but I think this is a very good move for a very backward educational system.
#6 xtatic43 on 30 Nov 2004 - 04:37
haha wow its like giving free As to all the techy people.

Brother Jebidiah, did granny finish churnnin' the butter for today?
Aye she did, so we're all going to the church in celebration, get your suit.
Brother Jebidiah, I think the devil is invading our schools, have you read the latest Neowin article?

ya ya, tell this to my school! they got all new dells(not my favorite but still better than the mac) with win xp pro... heres the bad... its got novell as there client manager and it REALLY sucks.. its not even the right version for the os, its for windows 98 and nt 4.... I think they need to do a win 2k3 server with active directory and setup the user data base that way, it would be way faster and more secure.
#9.1 Darkinspiration on 01 Dec 2004 - 14:39
actualy active directory is less secure and slower... really it is i'm not a novell fanboy and i admit that novell software does magical stuff .... like refusing to refress even do it as doen sof 500 times in the past days and nothing was changed on the network ... but theyre network product is first class. they had the equivalent of active directory before microsoft had dos ....

There is a different side of the story as well. Is is a big concern for many institutions about the growing "computer culture". It makes a person lazy and introvert. A computer savy typically spends more than 50% of his time (more than 12 hrs) infront of his pc and thus it affects his/her social life. He does only two things: when tired, he goes to sleep and when awake is infront of his box.

From academic point of view, it may be good, however from social point of view, it has side effects.
#10.1 SquareSoft0 on 30 Nov 2004 - 23:43
Some people value academics over social; if everyone were lazy computer-jockies I don't think there would be any wars. (Except the flood of flamewars online, which I find delightfully entertaining )
#10.2 werejag on 01 Dec 2004 - 09:43
wow no wars.

let's sit at our pcs more
