Google has swapped out its main Groups service with a beta of Google Groups 2, which the search giant has been testing since last May. Users who click the "Groups" link on the Google homepage will be redirected to the beta offering that promises enhanced features and focuses on community building.

In fashion with MSN's Communities and Yahoo!'s Groups, Google Groups 2 allows users to design their own group Web sites, mailing lists and newsletters. Users can designate whether a group is public or restricted, which limits who can read or respond to conversations. Building upon its more than 1 billion post Usenet archive, Google says conversations to both user-created Google Groups lists and Usenet appear within seconds and are searchable within minutes.

why is this just now news? i've been using the beta groups for a few months now. i think it's much better than the previous groups but i'm not sure what the "news" is? has something changed in the past few months? i just looked and it's still the same. what's new?

One thing I don't like about the new layout is the stupid menu bar of useless links over on the left taking up a ton of space. Now between it and the sponsored links on the right side, the search results are squeezed into the middle of the screen. To me it just looks cluttered and sloppy. One thing I do like is the way they now handle quoted text. It's now hidden and only the reply is shown, instead of having a whole page full of quoted text that you've just read fifteen times and then cutting off the actual reply.

No search for message date! Gah. I've emailed and told them to bring it back.

Let's hope it is for the better...
