America Online Inc. yesterday cut about 750 employees, mostly at the Internet firm's Northern Virginia headquarters, as part of renewed efforts to slash costs due to mounting subscriber losses. The personnel cuts at the struggling online firm's headquarters followed smaller workforce reductions and other cost savings. The latest cuts include more senior-level AOL executives — including a number at the vice president level — than in the past.

But with the loss of subscribers continuing, and pressure from parent Time Warner Inc. for the AOL division to keep generating about $1 billion annually in cash, America Online was forced to eliminate about 7 percent of its workforce in Northern Virginia. The cuts would save the company an estimated $75 million next year, officials said.

· The best PC performance: Choose between a silent running mode or the best graphics performance settings and the wizard automatically adjusts all performance metrics (clocks, voltages, fan speeds, bus speeds, etc.) to get the best options for the hardware in the system.
· Improved dynamic overclocking: Provides on-the-fly overclocking and BIOS configuration within an easy-to-use Windows interface that is streamlined and simplified for better user understanding.
· Benchmarking wizard: See how your PC configuration stacks up against synthetic benchmarks before and after adjusting system parameters.
· Saved system profiles: Save, import, and export custom overclocking or BIOS profiles. Assign profiles to favorite programs for automatic application. A safety "watchdog" checks temperature and steps system down if failure could occur.
· GPU overclocking: Overclocking of GeForce FX and GeForce 6 Series GPUs is supported in concert with system overclocking, temperature monitoring, and system profiles.
· System troubleshooting: An automated reporting tool captures all needed information to help you determine when problems may be happening to the system, and helps you troubleshoot.
· Improved system monitoring: Temperatures, voltages, and bus speeds are now available as an “always-on-top” window with a transparency option so that it is visible at all times.
· Voltage and bus speed monitoring: Track actual motherboard voltages, GPU clocks, bus speeds, and CPU core speed to ensure safe and correct settings.
· Temperature and fan speed monitoring: Real-time monitoring of CPU, GPU and system temperatures helps prevent hardware damage. nTune supports dual-CPU and SLI multi-GPU systems.
· Dynamically adjustable voltages and fan speeds: Adjust motherboard voltage levels without a reboot, as well as dynamically control fan speeds.
· Dynamically adjustable memory timings: Change critical memory timings without rebooting and without entering the BIOS.

ALL corporations do this around the holidays. AOL doesn't have a monopoly on it.

AOL cut a lot of jobs this time last year. But don't think this is uncommon for AOL. They like to hire & fire, a trend that is saving the company a lot of money. What they do is hire waaay more people they can keep and tell them that out of the 500 or so people there will be only 100 openings. Once these positions are filled they tell them they need to make cutbacks and keep just 50 of the remaining employees. This forces them to work harder and longer, and bargain for less wages than expected. Once AOL finds out a persons job can be done for less they make more "cutbacks".
Pay attention, folks. Following this large cutback will be a lot of hiring. I would say about 1000-1500 people will be hired. This is all part of the company's strategy..

These people who lost their jobs were making an average of $100k/yr.

How can this possibly be? According to Bush and the Republicans, our economy is strong. Yet all I ever read about are layoffs STILL.

#11.1 EduardValencia on 09 Dec 2004 - 15:15
yup i know,

and the republicans still don't belive it

Yes, we measure the economy on how well AOL's doing

People tend to focus on bad news though. This article doesn't say the economy as a whole is doing poorly. All it says is AOL is cutting jobs for the holidays. Merry Christmas!
