Microsoft MSN Butterfly beta testers will shortly start testing the next revision of the MSN Explorer software. There will be minor changes and the addition of features like PhotoMail. PhotoMail allows you to embed images into your email and annotate them, apply effects to them etc just like you would in Microsoft Word.

MSN Beta testers will be receiving the MSN Explorer Beta CD shortly and it's expected that the beta will run until January.

Update: This quick beta will be to test increased quota sizes for MSN Mail. It's mainly an engineering patch and will remain at MSN Explorer 9.10. The beta is due to run for a few weeks only.

I use it, instead of Outlook and Firefox or IE.
#2.2 nathanintu on 15 Dec 2004 - 11:02
And you have used it already have you?
#2.3 Xam_Remny on 15 Dec 2004 - 11:27
I am using v9.1 at the moment.
#2.4 Jugalator on 15 Dec 2004 - 13:15
Does it have tabbed browsing?

I'm not trolling, I honestly want to know
That feature has grown on to me... *clicks link to load page in background*
#2.5 Xam_Remny on 15 Dec 2004 - 15:28
No it does not have tabs. But anyhow it only makes sense when you got a MSN Premium account.
#2.6 ec4912 on 15 Dec 2004 - 15:37
Yeah, like he said, it does not have tabbed browsing. If it did, I would drop Firefox in a heartbeat. I currently use MSN Explorer for my email, calendar, and address book, and Firefox for regular browsing. I really like it.
#2.7 Jugalator on 15 Dec 2004 - 16:55
OK, thanks

I've honestly never looked into it much, but maybe it works well for an IE replacement on IE only sites.

Not sure I'd go with MSN Explorer for e-mail as I doubt it has auto-learning spam filters, without having to install extra software?
#2.8 ec4912 on 15 Dec 2004 - 17:43
No, actually, it does have smart junk mail filters that "learn" about junk mail everytime you click on the "Junk" button.

I don't know if it works though, because I have my Junk Mail Filter set to Exclusive.

PhotoMail allows you to embed images into your email and annotate them, apply effects to them etc just like you would in Microsoft Word.

Sounds like a useful feature when e.g. Outlook 2003 and Gmail block these things by default.
Personally I never liked the idea of images in mails, just a door opened for abuse.

Just because you can't embed images also don't mean you can't *attach* them, if you had some family photos or whatever.

No thanks to "rich" HTML mails
#5.1 ec4912 on 15 Dec 2004 - 15:46
I do see your point. But the embedded imaging was really useful back when I was dealing with people who could only accept up to 1 MB emails. MSN Explorer would compress the size of the images when embedding them. I was impressed with the compression ratio.

MSN Explorer also has a feature where you can embed compressed thumbnail versions of the photos and MSN Explorer will automatically upload the full quality images to their servers. The space is practically unlimited and it expires after about 30 days. A great way to send 50 MB of photos to someone across the world in a 500 KB email. The receipient can simply click on any thumbnail and they will be taken to a website where they can download the original pictures, or order prints if they wish.

Pretty sweet!

what if the cd leaks to the internet and i am an msn subcriber, can i use this software?
#6.1 Reflect on 15 Dec 2004 - 13:57
I think you would be able to use it if it leaked but i don't really think it will leak as that would fall under the NDA. Correct me if i'm wrong.
#7 y_notm on 15 Dec 2004 - 14:06
its not 9.2
#8 OceanMotion on 15 Dec 2004 - 14:23
Its not possible to use it without a paid account so it does'nt matter if ite leaked.
(1 reply) #9 ec4912 on 15 Dec 2004 - 15:49
Man, I wish it got leaked. When searching for information of the MSN Premium Beta last year, that’s how I found Neowin.
#9.1 Jugalator on 15 Dec 2004 - 16:56
Haha... All leaks lead to neowin?
(1 reply) #10 AthleticTrainer1981 on 15 Dec 2004 - 17:33
Gee what ever whappened to an NDA? Guess no one around here knows what that means anymore.

Hey people, use Firefox and retake the web! M$N explorer is just loaded with crap and does not deserve even in a recycle bin. I uninstalled this thing the first time I logon to my co. computer. FireFox is much more secure than any browser esp. M$ ones.
