Radio waves from mobile phones harm body cells and damage DNA in laboratory conditions, according to a new study majority-funded by the European Union, researchers said on Monday. The so-called Reflex study, conducted by 12 research groups in seven European countries, did not prove that mobile phones are a risk to health but concluded that more research is needed to see if effects can also be found outside a lab.

The $100 billion a year mobile phone industry asserts that there is no conclusive evidence of harmful effects as a result of electromagnetic radiation. About 650 million mobile phones are expected to be sold to consumers this year, and over 1.5 billion people around the world use one. The research project, which took four years and which was coordinated by the German research group Verum, studied the effect of radiation on human and animal cells in a laboratory.

In its twenty year history Reflections has created a number of break-out hits, including the Destruction Derby titles for the PlayStation, famous Amiga action title Shadow of the Beast, and, of course, the Driver series, whose success led Atari to acquire the studio in 1998.

The most recent title in the Driver series, Driv3r, was Atari's biggest commercial hope for this year, but the game launched to hugely polarised critical reaction - ultimately leading to allegations from some quarters that the firm had offered bribes or marketing deals in return from high review scores from certain publications.

What exactly were the "laboratory conditions"? And nothing ensures you'll have a research job more than saying more research is needed.

oh great here we go...another public safety scare.

A study has found, that eating green beans will cause cancer of the rectum...
five hundred lines down it explains ..."if you stick one up your crack that has been coated with insecticide"

Everyones going to Die someday, why not be with the comfort of your Downloadable Cellular Content and Pizza??

Some people out there care about how they die. Sure, they can try their hardest to live a life that will end with dying in their sleep, and wind up getting hit by a car at 50 years old instead, but I guess it's a matter of not living life feeling like they've given up on something.

I somtims wonder if we'll someday NEED this air pollution in order to survive...like the episode of Stargate: SG1 where they crash the plane into the plant and the plant alters the noise it makes, causing the people to get sick

AFAIK, we should not keep mobiles near our heart (it can cause heart-attack).

This is a surprise? It's a handheld microwave, for Pete's sake. One of the first things you learn when learning electronics is that RF can be harmful, even fatal(at high power).
#9 virtorio on 21 Dec 2004 - 22:39
Probably no more harmful than the chemicals found in your average Big Mac.

Haven't they been saying this sorta thing for a while? Having them in your pocket will cause infertility in males, etc... Do they have an alternative?

Okay will these wav radiations mess with my balls,

Thats all I wanna know.
#11.1 youlle on 21 Dec 2004 - 23:43
lol... genitals on both male and female are the most suseptible area to radiation, they aborb it like a sponge so yes they'll screw with your balls

i know this yet i keep my cell phone in my trouser pocket at work "do'h!"
#11.2 Liaqat_ali on 22 Dec 2004 - 00:46
I've got it attached to my belt.

* Checks if his belly button is okay............!
#11.3 daftperception on 22 Dec 2004 - 02:38
i have it attached to my balls is that bad. it makes a call from a friend much more special the vibration wakes me up to say the least.

No, remeber, using a laptop in your lap makes you shoot blanks, so a cellphone probably recodes your DNA and counteracts the laptop...ah nuts!
#12 SimplyPotatoes on 22 Dec 2004 - 00:48
So I should stop wearing my portable microwave headset, which lets me nuke a pizza while walking to and fro varias place?
#13 Yogurth on 22 Dec 2004 - 02:40
It is beautiful to live in negation, isn't it?

If You do not understand the nature of radiowaves used in cell phone industry You should not make "smart" comments. It all comes down to water molecules friction. Sounds familiar? It certalny does. Frequencies are very close to those of microwave owens.
#14 BeyondGodlike on 22 Dec 2004 - 02:49
who cares, theres so much radiation being emitted by everythin we do all day long its really quite insignificant
my comp screen, my cell, my tv, my laptop, the SUN

We're all gonna glow in the dark! I wonder when they're finally gonna come out and tell us that sex causes cancer?

Isn't there already enough disease that sex causes, let's keep cancer off of that long list.

My uncle works for a cell phone company manufacturing plant, when testing the phones, they HAVE to wear what looks like radiation proof suits. No joke, I got photos. So all the BS they feed us about it being safe is crap, its only safe if you spend a few minutes a week! on it!
#17.1 Magallanes on 22 Dec 2004 - 12:45
In Mythbuster (Discovery Channels of course) they showed the radiation of cell phones. The radiation peak is generated in the beginner of some calls then the radiation level goes down considerably. So if you can put the cellphone far away in the first second of a call, then you are a lot more secure!.
#17.2 MR_Candyman on 22 Dec 2004 - 15:55
umm...thy wear those suits or sanitation purposes. Wouldn't want to infest the whle lab with dead skin cells and hair, would we?
