Advertisement (Why?)
Microsoft have just finished distributing an internal Beta 1 escrow build to internal beta testers. "Atlanta" is the code-name for Microsoft's rehashed GIANT Software Anti-Spyware. In a memo internally, the company looks clear to distribute the software this coming Thursday calling it "new, it's fresh, and it's all good".

Encouraging employees to install the Beta is one of the many ways Microsoft tests Beta products internally. It's not clear whether the release this Thursday will be a public beta or a private external beta.

Check out our exclusive screenshots below.

Update: Microsoft is currently detecting Messenger Plus! as Spyware.

· Fixed: Thumbnail view: Ignore invalid thumbnails returned by the Explorer method
· Fixed: Thumbnail view: Don't send notification for thumbnails without an image

I'll give this a quick shot when it comes out this thursday then (assuming it is also publicly available)
#1.1 paulius on 03 Jan 2005 - 19:17
Noooooo... You think so?

I think that I'll go ahead and buy a commercially product for 100$ that gets rid of spyware. I mean, why use tools that Microsoft provided to me because I bought Windows?

Conclusion: Hell yea! I'll give it a try also!
#1.2 Denver_80203 on 03 Jan 2005 - 19:32
Since I switched to firefox.. I don't have spyware anymore. Ad-aware turns up ZILCH
#1.3 nemo on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:01
^^^ ditttttto
#1.4 ThaCrip on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:06
firefox alone helps cut back ALOT on spyware infection ... u can pretty much bet on that.
#1.5 cooldude7273 on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:11
You don't have to use IE to get spyware.... Spyware has many ways on getting on your PC....
#1.6 Uxtheme Rafael on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:15
Although the majority of spyware infections occur thru IE penetration.
#1.7 cooldude7273 on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:32
Thats arguable, considering you normally have to press "Accept" to get it. And I believe that the majority comes from software.
#1.8 slimy on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:37
plus, ie has been around a lot longer than ff and is used more often than ie (especially by noobs) which is why spyware is mainly created for ie
#1.9 AJCrowley Esq on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:47
QUOTE

Wrong. Spyware is created for IE because it's the only browser that exposes an interface (ActiveX) that allows remote hosts to install software on your machine through the browser.
#1.10 samriley on 03 Jan 2005 - 21:27
theres actually quite a few security holes that exist in ie that lets arbitary code run without user interaction and so spyware installed without any notification. i think all the holes are patched at the moment on sp2, but that doesnt help people not running xp.
#1.11 Ideas Man on 03 Jan 2005 - 22:57
You serious? IE lets spyware in? Why aren't I detecting any, why havn't i had any for ages, this is odd... I've always used IE, and I don't have any spyware, hmmm. The last spyware I remember was Kazaa and no amount of firefox whining will say that it will fix that spyware. God, some people are so pathetic. With good browsing sense, you can protect yourself. If you get infected with so much spyware, what does that say about your intelligence?
#1.12 Miran on 03 Jan 2005 - 22:59
If you installed Kazaa, what does that say about yours?

Well, I had it installed when everyone had it on. I shoulda mentioned that. Even then, it was short lived until i got a hold of Kazaa w/o Spyware , though now it's just plain stupid.

I've always used IE

Shudders.......

Well firefox is not an anti-Spyware tool, but with good browsing sense and a "good Sense browser" like firefox or mozilla suite, you are more than secure, IE will keep on getting patches until the end of the world, and Microsoft now capitalizes on his browser defects,..

Now that i think about it, What company profits from it's mistakes??...

This is a new market for Microsoft, My Software flaws make me RICH!!!!....

QUOTE
God, some people are so pathetic

ok i didn't install Kazaa only for hype..

#1.15 Raa on 04 Jan 2005 - 07:06
I think Maxthon does a great job. With common sense (browser, or browsing), you can avoid 99% of spyware. If its FF, fine. If its IE, fine again. Use whatever you prefer, and just surf carefully.

Oh and f**k kazaa Get something else, like Kazaa Lite.. Or Emule Plus... heh
#1.16 kitchenutensils on 04 Jan 2005 - 11:09
yeah in conclusion use what you like; but if you want to feel most secure its easiest to use ff. don't install kazaa or any of the spywared or riaa/bpi-protected p2ps but use something like limewire; or an alternative without spyware.
#1.17 Yakkob on 04 Jan 2005 - 16:57
I bet this will be a 'charged for' product when it's finally released.
#1.18 Cyranthus on 04 Jan 2005 - 17:11
can you read? it said it will be free... dumbass.
#1.19 Yakkob on 04 Jan 2005 - 22:46
OOooh How American (or read Pathetic)...'Dumbass'. et's see when it's finally released shall we? Microsoft aren't likely to BUY OUT Giant, and then distribute the software for free...Now are they? You Dumb-Bum < sounds much better the british way
#1.20 outofcoffee on 06 Jan 2005 - 02:03
Why ever not, oh lord-of-tech-takeovers? That's exactly what MS did with the Baseline Security Analyser - buy, rebrand, release.
#1.21 SquareSoft0 on 06 Jan 2005 - 04:29
You're anti-American, take 1 mystery card and roll again.
#1.22 Black on 06 Jan 2005 - 17:24
Actually the baseline security analyser is actually licensed by Microsoft not bought out by them, look in the help. Since AntiSpyware is a open beta, chances are good for a freeware release - quite neat by the way, caught 3 things that adaware and spybot missed (non critical and non IE before anyone asks). I also like the way it highlights programs like VNC which can be massive holes in your security.

plus Yakkob I'm British and I've never said 'Dumb-Bum' (or have the intention to do so) in my life - dumbass.

Uninteresting.
#2.1 Hurmoth on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:45
What kind of comment is that? Is it really needed?

I, personally, can't wait for this to come out. Looks awesome!
#2.2 theyarecomingforyou on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:50
I, for one, would choose this above other random spyware apps - not that there is anything wrong with them, but this looks very impressive (yes, I know they didn't develop it and they have hardly changed it).
#2.3 PseudoRandomDragon on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:56
Unintersting if you used it before. It is the same exact thing only with the stupid MS logo on it. The MS logo looks out of place too.
#2.4 outofcoffee on 03 Jan 2005 - 19:37
The issue was with the pithy comment, not with the MS logo.

Since you used it before Dragon, is it any good?
#2.5 slimy on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:39
i've used it, it was very good, but i didn't need it when I used it, as i didn't get spyware for a long time thx to a couple of FREE apps
#2.6 shao on 04 Jan 2005 - 10:15
but no free apps currently appear to offer the coverage that GIANT offers. Ideally i shouldn't need to have a multitude of applications installed to achieve the same goal as just one.
#2.7 PseudoRandomDragon on 04 Jan 2005 - 20:58
I used it before, yes it is very good. I dare say the best. It couldn't catch everything, but it could catch what spybot and adaware can catch and then some. MS purchased the best.
(7 replies) #3 Uxtheme Rafael on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:30
Same ****, different company label -- Quite a horrible job in new branding implementation as well... Surely they could change the colours or something? It looks exactly the same, sigh.
#3.1 kainashi on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:31
it's an early beta, what do you expect?

looks great. i might give it a try, if it's publicly available.
#3.2 Uxtheme Rafael on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:47
Seeing as it's beta, no major (if any) interface changes will be done.
#3.3 CheeseCow on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:56

And what do you base that upon? Do you know that they will change the interface later on? Do you think it is common to not change the interface until after the beta phase?

I think they will keep it just as it is. It looks plenty "Luna-ish" to me. Even more than their Media Player anyway.
#3.4 Aaryn Kasra on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:18
Yeah microsoft seems to have that habit of leaving the visual aspect of things untouched or nearly untouched in beta versions of their software. That I know from experience using it
#3.5 nvizible on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:19
doesn't look very luna-ish to me! looks more aero-ish, especially their button styling!

No CheeseCow, I think you got the wrong end of the stick - the two of you are actually making the same point. Because it's in beta already, it's unlikely that UI changes will occur now. That's what Uxtheme was saying, I think - not that they'll change it after the beta..
#3.7 Uxtheme Rafael on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:05
Yes, we were saying the same thing. Sorry for the confusion.

realtime protection. more resource hogging.
#5.1 Jugalator on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:38
There will always be a speed/security trade off that it's up to you to decide for how you wish to balance it.

A Windows XP computer where you haven't bothered doing anything for security is a swiss cheese but probably pretty fast and requiring no maintenance, while one that you've done tons for security is barely usable.
#5.2 Dan C on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:01
I have no resource hog problems here, with the latest build of GIANT Anti Spyware.
#5.3 Raa on 04 Jan 2005 - 07:04
Yeah and a Windows 2000 Professional computer WITH security updates runs even faster again....
#5.4 shao on 04 Jan 2005 - 10:18
having seen friends and families pc's which are littered with malware (adware, dialers, viruses, spyware, etc) i think it's pretty safe to say the "system hog" resulting from realtime protection has to be better than the kind of 100% system hog you get from an infected pc.
#5.5 Drestin on 04 Jan 2005 - 18:16
Sundayx: Realtime protection can be disabled, no overhead.
#5.6 Roland Gr on 05 Jan 2005 - 10:00
I just came across a brand new app with realtime protection called Abuseshield from globesoft.com, it works faster than Giant and looks very promising

good question . I don't know but I think you will have to pay for it.
(2 replies) #10 canyonblue737 on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:41
i hope MS continues to further integrate this spyware scanning and free auto updating into XP. they got us into this mess and forcing us to pay for auto updating spyware soultions (example Adaware) is unacceptable. yes i know i can get free versions of lots of great stuff but they won't autoupdate and i am tired of my parents computer getting spyware and me having to fix it when i go over there with my wife.
#10.1 ecvogel on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:58
If Microsoft does not charge, then anti-trust all over again. This is better than Spybot and Ad-Aware. I will probably subscribe. I hopes when combined I do not have to pay for AV, as I already have NIS 2k5.
#10.2 dakomo on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:13
no they can provide it for free as a download so its not bundled with the OS or similar.
#11 jack_pearce on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:45
Dosn't look too bad

This for real?
#14.2 Uxtheme Rafael on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:56
Yes, before Microsoft bought GIANT and slapped on their logo. Everything is the same.
#14.3 Molgar on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:00
For real, it's version 1.0.301, the last one released before being bought by MS.

Trial for 15 days though.
#14.4 Goalie_CA on 03 Jan 2005 - 22:34
Somehow the word Innovative will get slapped on it
#14.5 shao on 04 Jan 2005 - 10:20
compared to other similar solutions (adaware, etc) it is actually pretty innovative.
#15 Dan C on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:49
Looking forward to it
#16 atpcz on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:51
i've been using GIANT and i think its great. will definatley look at this as there will be an enterprise version as well and we're looking for something like this

It's sad that we even need antivirus or antispyware.
#18.1 Coolme on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:56
That's the same thing as saying.... "It is sad that we need police in this world."
#18.2 theyarecomingforyou on 03 Jan 2005 - 19:35
Is that not sad as well?
#18.3 outofcoffee on 03 Jan 2005 - 19:48
Bizzarely it's encouraging in both cases. Given that, in society there will always be people that neccessitate security enforcement, to some extent police/anti-spyware/anti-virus tools, which decrease the effectiveness of their actions, serve to discourage people from conducting anti-social acts.

#20 ev0| on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:54
Looks like its gonna kick adaware's ass. I'll probably grab it, it had better be free.
(2 replies) #21 smart001 on 03 Jan 2005 - 17:54
I look forward to giving this a shot! I wonder how it will hold up against adaware and spy bot (the two that I use now) I also wonder what kind of system resources it will use!
#21.1 Vannos on 03 Jan 2005 - 19:38
Tests have shown that when it was owned by GIANT, the software caught more spyware then eigher Adaware or Spybot, and also had less false positives then thoes two. Actually i think it had no false positives where spybot had a few.
#21.2 atpcz on 03 Jan 2005 - 21:13
i'll second that - GIANT picked up 2 keyoggers that both SpyBot and Adaware both missed.

Shouldn't they be fixing up Internet Explorer primarily?

Their browser is completely crippled by today's standards and is due out for a reconstruction at this day in age.

Overall the rise of spyware has been at fault due to the lack of security in their very own browser.
#24.1 Dan C on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:13
Many softwares come bundled with spywares aswell you know, like Msgplus... I wouldn't just blame it on IE.
#24.2 nvizible on 03 Jan 2005 - 18:21
hmmm... i think they should just buy over opera tbh... best browser, and has a nice "feel" to it! coz i know they cant make a good browser themselves ^^

Yea, and break a proportion of the web. Yes I know, I know, "MS broke it in the first place", "It's just correcting a mistake/making it standards-compliant" etc. but like it or not, many pages, especially those that use CSS2+ are 'broken' standards-wise to display correctly with IE, and changing the mainstream browser technology will only serve to break hundreds of thousands, or even millions, of sites.

That's just the way it is.
#24.4 todd` on 03 Jan 2005 - 20:05
#24.3: I think in the name of overall improvement, that's exactly what needs to happen. Let these sites "break." At this point, the web will have to get worse before it can get significantly better.

Just my thoughts though.
