Can someone tell me how MS manages to release a new mobile version very 1-2 years but can't get a desktop os out the door in under 6 years, I understand the tech difference but really.....

Currently Microsoft are only testing Magneto on the Motorola MPx220 Smartphone. This indicates that the device will be able to be upgraded sometime this year. It's unclear what others devices will be supported for upgrade.

Sounds promising.....

I don't know, windows mobile 2003 was made for the mpx200 but never officialy released. Held back instead for the next phone (mpx220). Probably a more attractive idea for phone manufacturers and networks

Pocket PC users will be pleased to hear that Microsoft are creating a "Pocket PC Persistent Store". The annoying thing with current Windows Mobile versions is the loss of data if you forget to charge your device, the Pocket PC Persistent Store will elimate this even if you don't charge.

Not to troll, but this has been the number one reason why I have disliked Pocket PCs since their inception. What brilliant mind decided that Pocket PCs should purge themselves of data if they run out of charge?

Palms do not exhibit this behavior at all.

In any event, I'm glad to see this one very welcomed change. Welcome to 1997, Microsoft!

Actually, they do. Palms also store most data in volatile memory. My Treo 600 was victim to this effect on a few occasions.

Many PocketPC's, like Palm's, refuse to function if they get below 15% or 10% battery life. The idea is that the last bit of battery life will sustain the memory until a recharge. Many others (like my PPC6601) have a second backup battery just for the memory.

I don't really see why this is a new feature, though. I think it's just a new name. Most WM2003 devices (including mine once again) can store certain data in the ROM.

Still others store their data on SD cards which also makes sense.

So we can expect even more worms (and perhaps virii) in the future!
#13.1 b0m8er on 04 Jan 2005 - 20:30
How the hell is that related to this article??? There're no worms /viruses for modile devices yet.

I currently have a Nokia Series60 phone, and I really like it, but I've been waiting to get a WM Smartphone. Think I'm going to wait for a while.

Interesting that in the ActiveSync screenshot the Tasks data is set to sync with an Exchange server something that can't currently be done...
#16.1 neufuse on 04 Jan 2005 - 22:32
in the new version it can be you don't need outlook to sync you can talk directly to exchange now, since all outlook does really in exchange mode is just read all the content off exchange, why not do the same thing with the sync and save the middle man.. an example is you have a smart phone, you are in the field and need to sync with the exchange server. You don't have outlook right? but you have a wireless data connection to you outlook web access site on exchange server... it can talk to that instead of syncing with a desktop to sync over the wireless connection directly to exchange.

Dell= Good products + Good price + Horrible Service, Support
Don't know what to expect anymore...

Grrrr i buy a Mobile 2003 smartphone and now they announce this, damn microsoft.
#22.1 Sn1p3t on 04 Jan 2005 - 23:04
It's been "announced" for a LONG time. Research
#23 Sn1p3t on 04 Jan 2005 - 23:05
This version is also supposed to have a mobile version of DirectX. The upgraded phones probablly won't be able to support it, but some leaked news of new Samsung phones with 500Mhz processors inside show that the next generation will be awesome.
#24 Bricktop on 04 Jan 2005 - 23:08
I could not be more thrilled, chances are this will be offered as an upgrade to Dell Axim X50v users....
(1 reply) #25 k3rny on 04 Jan 2005 - 23:11

I saw Magneto and got my hopes up for a X-Men theme....
#27 Hills420 on 04 Jan 2005 - 23:18
looks pretty cool...
#28 brianshapiro on 05 Jan 2005 - 01:34
toshiba wont even give me an upgrade past pocket pc 2002 to 2003 for the e740. they say i 'dont need it'
but whats worse is that i bought it at compusa with a walk-in replacement plan, meaning i should be able to go in the store and have it replaced with an available model for one time for whatever reason; but they now are saying they changed their policy and i'd have to have it shipped to toshiba to have it evaluated.
............

#29 Tai on 05 Jan 2005 - 01:41
cant see much of the current run of hardware being upgradable to this, given the manufacturers would rather we buy completely new mobiles ... after all, it isnt a standard os like XP ... all the manufactuers seem to customize it to their own products ... and leave users of older hardware out in the cold when something new comes along ... heck .. we cant even use wmpmobile 10 on ipaqs like the 2210 ... so i will wait before buying a new pda now ....
