More text messages were sent last weekend to usher in 2005 than ever before in Britain - and the growth of SMS is expected to continue over the coming year. In the first 24 hours this year, some 133 million text messages were sent in the UK. Mobile networks became jammed after midnight with thousands of people trying to make phone calls and send messages at exactly the same time causing a near meltdown in service for many.

This year's total is 20% up on the same time last year. In all, 25 billion texts were sent in the UK in 2004. That's predicted to grow to 30 billion over the coming 12 months. The Mobile Data Association is delighted at the news - and believes texting is set to overtake the traditional phone call as Brits' preferred method of communication.

Mike Short, MDA chairman, told BBC News: "In the case of a New Year's Eve party, texting is useful if you are unable to speak or hear because of a noisy background. We thought texting might slow down as MMS (multimedia messages) took off but we have seen no sign of that." The number of messages sent across time zones also increased, with the different times involved making phone calls an unfeasible option.

Not impressive at all. Chinese people send more than 1.5 Billion SMS messages per day.

Forcast: 1.4 trillion SMS messages in 2006

True, but there's 1.3 billion people in China compared to only 60 million in Britain.

Chinese people in general? Man, the Chinese must be rich! One person sending 1.5 Billion SMS's a day? Must have thick thumbs! Sorry, lame joke had to come out!

China's mobile market is still immature and has lots of room for expansion.

Besides, I would rather be the CEO of China Mobile than any other provider.

I know someone that sends about 200 text messages a day, she's obsessed, It's stupid, she could save alot of money by just phoning.

I wonder if it is actually any cheaper to send text rather than phone call. Hmmmm, I should look into that since I text pretty frequently!
#8.1 rIaHc3 on 09 Jan 2005 - 19:30
Well i think in the long run it is cheaper but depends on your plans and how long you talk on your phone during a call...

I think text messaging has revolutionized communication and should be classified aside from anything else we have a category for.

Tried calling and texting two people (when drunk) and couldn't get through, first I thought it was me and then I exploded in rage when I realized it was O2, nearly threw my phone out of my window and then settled back down and drank some more.

From the landline though, that was more weird, "The number you have called has not been recognised, please try again" o.o

Damn "Network Busy" all the time when I was trying - arrrrh, the nightmares lol
