Another key Mozilla Developer, Darin Fisher, announced today that he has joined Google inc.

Ben Goodger, on Monday, announced that he had joined Google Inc but pledged to continue work on the Mozilla Project and on key releases like Firefox 1.1, 1.5 and 2.0. Darin, who currently owns Cookie/Permissions, NetLib (The Mozilla Networking Library) and NSPR (Netscape Portable Runtime) modules has also announced he will continue work on these Mozilla Projects.

In a brief post on his weblog, Darin said the following "I thought I'd post that I have joined Google as well. Like Ben, I will still be very much involved with the Mozilla project and community :-)". Darin has previously worked for IBM and Netscape/AOL.

Clearly Google is developing technologies that will build into or off current Mozilla projects. Neither Google nor Darin have announced what Darin's work role at Google will be.

#1.1 chacho on 26 Jan 2005 - 20:03
These guys are still working for Mozilla, but they don't get a paycheck from it. So, they get their salary from Google. They aren't leaving.

very: Middle English verrai, from Old French verai, true, from Vulgar Latin veracus, from Latin verax, verac-, truthful, from verus, true.

No wonder it sounds strange

People please do not start this "Google Browser" crap up again because it's not going to happen. Darin along with many other devs currently work for other companies like Sun and IBM but yet devote their spare time to mozilla. So take off your tin hats
#6.1 Knight' on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:54
Well, one could make a perfectly valid argument that Google would want to intergrate more of their technologies into the Mozilla Firefox browser, given that the above arcticle is such. Therefore, I don't see the idea of a "Google browser" completly unfounded
#6.2 EduardValencia on 27 Jan 2005 - 03:05
lollll yah, this google broswer won't happen for sure
#7 Ikshaar on 26 Jan 2005 - 16:37
To Brent3000: Well they keep working for Mozilla just paid by Google... so all good.

I am just wondering what Google is up to....

Would love to see them develop XUL application like the MAB for Amazon... to have the easy side of browser (no install) and `responsiveness` of local application. Plus cross-platform compatibility.

[Not talking about Google browser ]
#8 canyonblue737 on 26 Jan 2005 - 16:54
it seems like this is OK for Firefox. apparently google loves Firefox and wants to intergrate their technology into it, so they are hiring these guys to help them CONTINUE to improve firefox and help integrate google technology into it. google did NOT hire these guys to work on something other than firefox, so it seems like these announcements only mean BETTER things for firefox (since i think most agree google does some great things.)
#9 Jugalator on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:01
Yup, this isn't bad news for Firefox at all, it's actually good since it assures they'll keep getting paid for working on the browser. I see no problem with any future Google integrations, since their technology is usually on par or exceed the quality of Firefox itself.
(3 replies) #10 canyonblue737 on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:05
yeah it isn't like google is hiring these guys to work on something else... they are hiring them to ensure they can focus 100% on firefox and improving it with the full force of google behind them. that can only mean great things.
#10.1 ProgramGeek on 26 Jan 2005 - 18:55
Woah woah woah woah!!! This can only mean good things?

Trust me, google is a great company, with a great search algorythm (sp?) and probably one of the best search engines we have out there... Google, like some of you may forget, is a company.. The only reason we kind of forget this is because google isn't nescessarily "evil".. But do you think a corporation made to make money will just give away there money for the sake of a web browser? Is google in the firefox search because of the convenience that most people prefer it, or is it something inside?

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE google, BUT I don't think you should make bold assumptions like that..
#10.2 el22 on 26 Jan 2005 - 23:28
Listen to ProgramGeek
#10.3 nookadum on 27 Jan 2005 - 12:37
AOL gave the Mozilla Foundation 2 million dollars (I THINK) to continue development on Gecko. AOL also gave 2 million dollars to Nullsoft to develop Winamp (although I think they're screwing them up now).

But yeah, AOL still is evil even though.
#11 imtoomuch on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:17
Down with Google! They are trying to take over the computing world and we shouldn't let them.

Strange how everyone is ok with this, now if Microsoft did the same thing, it would be another story... bunch of hypocrites we are..
#12.1 SVT on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:44
QUOTE
if Microsoft did the same thing, it would be another story...

Microsoft doesn't hire talented developers, they only hire talented sales and marketing people. They let firms in India do all the development.
#12.2 Surr3al on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:53
Wait, you forgot to mention that Google isn't a bunch of assholes, whereas it seems that Microsoft is.
#12.3 chacho on 26 Jan 2005 - 20:06
He also forgot to mention that Microsoft is evil.
#12.4 NetRyder on 26 Jan 2005 - 20:55
Awww...poor SVT is bitter. Can't get a decent job? Maybe you should work on improving your skills instead of blaming outsourcing for all your problems.
Oh, and I'm sure the folks at Redmond don't do any development, right? Good job flaunting your ignorance.
#12.5 el22 on 26 Jan 2005 - 23:36
Err.. SVT

Microsoft has 58,000 employees worldwide

HALF, 28,000, are in the WASHINGTON STATE, including Redmond, where they do most (if not all) of the development.

9,000 more are elsewhere in the USA.

Only about 20,000 are elsewhere, and just divide that by the number of countries Microsoft has offices in. Most big campuses outside Redmond are just for smaller projects (such as translation), research or just sales.
#12.6 EduardValencia on 27 Jan 2005 - 03:07
stop SVT please!!!!
#13 Ivand on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:41
Now this is weird
(1 reply) #14 deiong15 on 26 Jan 2005 - 17:55
why does google need these peopel when all there going to do is slap there logo all over firefox. it sholdnt take a team of people to do this.
#14.1 chacho on 26 Jan 2005 - 20:07
What the **** are you talking about?

How do you know what Google is going to have these guys do?

Idiot.
(3 replies) #15 RangerLG on 26 Jan 2005 - 18:22
Now if Google starts paying these people to develop FireFox and integrate things into the browser, whose to say that Google won't say what can and can't go into the browser? Like to use someone else's search engine? Sorry, you work for Google. Google may also (gasp!) close the source code! Not saying that this is going to happen, but things change a lot when money becomes involved.
#15.1 Enders on 26 Jan 2005 - 18:54
Uh, no.

Google isn't paying them to develop firefox, Google just hired them so they could have a little influence on firefox and maybe integrate a few (useful) google tools. Google has no control over firefox as a whole and it certainly has no control over closing the source code.

Ben and the rest of the developrs are never going to develop firefox based on what a company like Google wants, that would defeat the whole purpose of firefox. Sure this will help strenthen their relationship and they can work together to make firefox better but nothing bad will come of this.
#15.2 M2Ys4U on 26 Jan 2005 - 19:00
The source code is owned by the Mozilla Foundation, NOT Ben or Darin
#15.3 N@t5 on 26 Jan 2005 - 19:09
Just because Google hired some of the developers doesn't mean they control the source or can close it

in other news, some guy quit his job today... only to get rehired by someone else...

...who cares?
#19.1 EduardValencia on 27 Jan 2005 - 03:09
yah makes sense
#19.2 Jugalator on 27 Jan 2005 - 07:38
I guess the person doesn't matter, and what company is involved.

So if Gates would join Apple, you'd just go "so a person quit a company and joined another"?
#19.3 Cyranthus on 29 Jan 2005 - 00:06
well Bill Gates is a little more of a known name... this is just some nobody that nobody really cares about... to me this headline says "random guy quits Mozilla, rehired by Google"

if any news just spoke on random terms like that, would you care?
(1 reply) #20 shake on 27 Jan 2005 - 05:02
say whatever u want to ... it still wouldnt be the same. They might be still commited to firefox but now it will be a secondary thing compared to whatever projects google assigns to them and might let things slide a bit.
#20.1 Ikshaar on 27 Jan 2005 - 16:04
Shake, why don't you read the news before posting... Ben explicitly says that he will keep his same work project... could it change in the future, well i hope for him meanwhile he is STILL coding for Firefox !!!
#21 BOOGSoftball on 28 Jan 2005 - 06:12
This is really interesting...makes you wonder if Google is on to something, or if Mozilla is doing something bad inside.
#22 Tech001101 on 28 Jan 2005 - 16:15
a spin off from Firefox with a google browser is imminent. don't deny it.
