Thanks DJ Prem for alerting us of this.

Microsoft has announced immediate availability of Microsoft® Windows Server SP1 and Windows XP x64 Edition Technical Beta, Release Candidate 2 build 1433. It is now available for download at http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com.

Note - This is the second major milestone and highest quality release to date for the beta. Microsoft asks that testers keep in mind that it is not final release quality and it should be limited to test machines

and thanks to CountryKING™ who also alerts us via BPN that Windows Update v6 Beta has started, currently anyone can access the site by agreeing to the terms "I have read the preceding information and confirm that I am currently a registered Microsoft Windows Update Beta user". Its unclear if this will remain so, as Microsoft were unavailable for comment at the time of posting.

Firstly, could you tell us about yourself, your history?

I've been into recreational mathematics most of my life, and worked in software startups for a while after dropping out of college before starting work on BitTorrent.

Tell us about BitTorrent- what was the inspiration? What were you trying to achieve with the protocol?

I had a lot of experience working on networking protocols, and was interested in exploring what I thought were the reasonable problems to work on. My main goal was to make it cheap to distribute large, popular files, which I of course succeeded in doing.

BitTorrent, it was recently suggested, was carrying as much as 30% of the webs traffic; how did you re-act to this news?!

I don't have any visceral concept of how much that bandwidth that really is, so it's mostly just surreal.

Moving onto BitTorrent uses at the moment - it'd be hard to ignore the arguably most common use of the protocol - piracy. How do you feel about this? Did you think about the potential for 'abuse' when you conceived the protocol?

Given the history of such tools, it's fairly obvious that the general public has a strong interest in piracy.

A group have created a new program called eXeem which appears to solve one of the problems BitTorrent has- that off tracking torrents. Have you seen the program, and if so, what do you think of it?

It's yet another napster/kazaa/edonkey/hotline/whatever. BitTorrent usage is doing quite well without it.

Moving on, the protocol has clearly many legitimate uses; have you seen any especially unique implementations?

They're all just pushing around bits, which is about all I care about.

How do you think companies are going to deal with bandwidth in years to come - do you think it will be something along the lines of bit torrent, or something radically different?

Peer to peer as an approach is here to stay.

What's cool technology wise in the Cohen house hold at the moment? What'd be your pick for the "next big thing"?

I've also been working on the Codeville version control system and designing twisty puzzles. I don't know what the next big thing is.

Finally, what does the future hold for yourself?! What are you working on at the moment?

I'm continuing to work on BitTorrent.

so neowin is suggesting to people to lie to microsoft by clicking a button when they dont meet the requirements (or something like that) why doesnt neowin just sugesst we all generate our own keys for software.
#1.1 Help on 09 Feb 2005 - 07:22
Its unclear if this will remain so, as Microsoft were unavailable for comment at the time of posting.

Neowin tried to ask MS about this but they didn't say anything, and until then, the link will still be there.
#1.2 divertom15 on 09 Feb 2005 - 07:43
um no they didnt you dont know how this works do you rofl.
#1.3 SquareSoft0 on 09 Feb 2005 - 07:55
^^^
You have failed.
#1.4 divertom15 on 09 Feb 2005 - 08:19
me or help?

well neowin should know better then suggest to users they should be doing something they shouldnt. like a sign saying this fax machine only for the boss. when you could easily sneak in and use it. doesnt mean it is right and doesnt mean neowin should be suggesting or condoning such actions. as they havent condoned such actions in the past (anyone remeber the DO NOT POST DOWNLOAD LINKS FOR SP2 FINAL UNTILL MS DOES!!!!111(even if testers already have it) )
#1.5 SquareSoft0 on 09 Feb 2005 - 09:19
You have failed, divertom, for assuming Neowin knows for a fact that this is not alright to do and bashing them for it. Nobody knows if Microsoft didn't want it like this, going by the fact that it is such, they most likely did. (There's rumors that MS purposely leaked some Longhorn builds.) They didn't "suggest" anything and they can't well "condone" it unless it's shown to be one way or the other. Stop making assumptions, failure.
#1.6 bangbang023 on 09 Feb 2005 - 13:51
We don't suggest anything. Steven Parker (aka Neobond) is simply reporting a possible flaw that someone pointed out. Maybe you are just looking for reasons to complain.
#1.7 EduardValencia on 12 Feb 2005 - 17:26

It's not 6, its 5a.
(3 replies) #5 DigitalDJ on 09 Feb 2005 - 08:01
5a at the moment but it is "6 Beta"

So Win2003 SP1 Final is only for testers at the moment? Whens it out for the public?
#5.1 Sierra Sonic on 09 Feb 2005 - 08:03
"Note - This is the second major milestone and highest quality release to date for the beta. Microsoft asks that testers keep in mind that it is not final release quality and it should be limited to test machines."
#5.2 DigitalDJ on 09 Feb 2005 - 08:10
i read that but it doesnt specifically note Win2003 SP1. I thaught it was XP x64 RC2. The title isnt very clear.

Does SP1 and x64 rc2 have the same build number then?
#5.3 divertom15 on 09 Feb 2005 - 08:23
yes thats because x64 xp is simply a different "compile" of the server2k3 sp1 code you have 5 compiles the s2k3sp1 32 bit, s2k3 sp1 amd64bit, the s2k3 sp1 itanium64bit, xp x64 sp1, and the updater exe for existing installs of s2k3
#6 RanCorX2 on 09 Feb 2005 - 08:11
appears those xp updates are available, if anyone hasn't checked yet.....

Win2003 SP1 RC2 - new build, public?
#8 bangbang023 on 09 Feb 2005 - 13:50
The interface for the new WU isnt't as good as WU5, IMO. For instance, having command buttons where there used to be text for the "express/custom" choice looks pretty bad.
#9 bucko on 09 Feb 2005 - 14:03
Yay XP64 RC2 out, I get my AMD64 3200+ laptop on the 25th, hoping it is ready then (gold) . I know I don't need it because I doubt I will be having 8GB ram any time soon but it's good to have, I hear downloads are faster
#10 jwjw1 on 09 Feb 2005 - 15:10

Is this the correct name of the ISO for XP Pro x64 RC2:
w2k3sp1_1289_usa_x64fre_pro.iso at 543 mb?

This is what I got in my email from Microsoft but the name seems to indicate it's 2003 server sp1.
#16.1 Defiant on 09 Feb 2005 - 17:26
Nope its: w2k3sp1_1433_usa_x64fre_pro.iso - 568mb

Beta Testers have access right now, MSDN later on when its posted, not sure about the CPP.

They should get it but when you'll have to keep checking for the build on the CPP pages.

#19.1 SquareSoft0 on 11 Feb 2005 - 11:32
What are you rambling on about? And no, I don't think anybody wants to copy an x86-64 processor, it's just asinine.
