This article was translated from Dutch at Nu.nl.

The Dutch Hallmark internet site was barely online all day yesterday due to a massive influx of users trying to send the free valentine e-cards. According to a spokesperson of Hallmark around 125,000 e-cards did manage to get delivered.

The amount of visits yesterday was unknown and the international site also had a lot of trouble staying online.

About 40,000 people reserved an e-card for submission a few days before Monday and 80,000 were sent on Valentines day itself via the site. Last year it was less at 80,000 in total.

Did you send one? I did but I had to go elsewhere to get it sent!

Nothing better than trying to send "love" at no cost to someone. *sarcasm*
*shakes head*
But maybe I'm being overly critical. I'm sure there are some who honestly can't afford it, but I doubt that's the majority, if they have access to the Internet at all.

Some people send e-cards and give real cards at the same time.

The e-card can be just to a friend, or a reminder about a date.

That happens every damn holiday on the hallmark.com site as well... I know it's free (the free e-cards that cause it) but come on.. whats the point if you can't even load the page around holiday... or the person gets the e-card like 1 week after the holiday...

They do it on purpose so you have to go to the store and actually purchase one. They don't make money on free e-cards!

I haven't read their privacy policy, but many "free e-Cards" are actually paid for by sale of both the sender and recipient's addresses to spammers or hocking their own penis enlargement pills. Either way spam is the price for most free e-cards.

I just went to www.mac.com and sent one of the free iCards. Sure, it ain't animated, but they're still cool.

I don't like the animated ones anyway.

Lazy *******s.

Seriously, why people wait until the last minute for any holiday is beyond me. It's not like they come flying out of nowhere at random.

Read the article. You could have reserved a card to be sent out on Monday.

I'll never understand why Hallmark gets SO overloaded... sure, they do have lovely cards, but it was such a torture waiting for my valentine's card to load! My love sent it to me like RIGHT past midnight on sunday, and I couldn't see it until 10 AM on monday...

There's not too many quality free ecard sites anymore. Few years back, I used to turn to bluemountain for 'em, but that and americangreetings are making you pay after a free trial.

The main Hallmark.com website is down too for most of the day. At 8:30 this morning the website did not respond to any requests and most of the time displayed "Page Not Found" message to all its visitors. See more details here: http://www.websitepulse.com/monitor/93.hal...ast-minute.html
