Microsoft Corp. Tuesday confirmed that it will release in March a beta version of what it is calling a unified software update service for consumers and small and midsize businesses. Called Microsoft Update, the service will provide a single location for users to get security and performance patches for Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Office 2003 and Exchange Server 2003.

Microsoft Update is designed to be "a superset of Windows Update, which will continue to exist" as a security and performance patch server for system administrators for medium and large enterprises, said Gary Schare, Microsoft's director of security product management in Redmond, Wash. Both Microsoft Update and Windows Update are designed to give users and administrators a single place where they can go to get security and performance patches for Microsoft products.

About Area 51:

The U.S. Army has received a distress signal from Area 51 where a viral outbreak has just shut down the research facility and the automated quarantine procedures have locked all scientific and military personnel inside. A small Special Forces unit including Specialist Ethan Cole of the HAZMAT (hazardous materials) Division is sent to investigate.

As Cole, players delve into the massive levels within the confines of Area 51, only to discover a deadly mutagenic side effect of the virus that controls the minds of those infected, as well as an ancient alien colony buried beneath the facility. Players will uncover the truth behind chilling conspiracies as they come across the remnants of the extraterrestrial crash at Roswell, alien autopsies, and the faked lunar landing. Cole must solve the enigma of Area 51 before the viral mutagen is released and irrevocably mutates all life on Earth.

I am glad Microsoft is working hard to provide new things for consumers before Longhorn... IE7, Microsoft Update, security updates and more...

Good stuff!

Yes, lets hope they keep going on Windows 2000 as well

Sounds great. I hate having to go to multiple places to get my updates.
#4.1 Steven on 17 Feb 2005 - 05:16
Two places for me. Office Update & Windows Update, it isn't all that terrible.
#4.2 Jaded on 17 Feb 2005 - 05:25
It is when you have to do it multiple time a day
#4.3 Raa on 17 Feb 2005 - 19:56
Really?

Since when did MS release patches multiple times in a day? :|
(1 reply) #5 alpaca2500 on 17 Feb 2005 - 04:03
so, windows update is to microsoft update as software update server (SUS is to Windows Update Server (WUS)... correct?
#5.1 markjensen on 17 Feb 2005 - 04:17
That's kinda where I am at...

This is promoted as "a single place where they [users/admins] can go", but there are two of them with similar function. Reading the eWeek article didn't clear up anything for me, either.

I don't think it's gonna be any different from the current Windows Update. Just that it will be renamed to Microsoft Update...

Or then what's the difference between MS update and Win Update?

It will include Office & Exchange updates as well...

So will they tie in other things like Office Update to Microsoft Update?
#7.1 Steven on 17 Feb 2005 - 05:16
I believe in the beginning Microsoft Update will support Windows, Exchange, SQL Server & Office. These are the 4 major software patches that Microsoft supports.
#8 Ideas Man on 17 Feb 2005 - 05:08
Microsoft Update is being designed as the single place to download updates for all of Microsoft's software, I think that includes their games also, but I could be wrong.

I am glad this is coming, one stop shop to update all your Microsoft software. Other OS's like Mac OS X and Linux varients have done this already (I love Gentoo's portage system), and now no longer having to visit multiple places to get updates for all of MS's software is nice.
#9.1 markjensen on 17 Feb 2005 - 11:47
Except portage will update the kernel, GNU, and every other app that you have installed. It truly is an all-encompassing update system. The Microsoft Update system will only update a select few products (and nothing 3rd party, of course).
#9.2 Martog on 17 Feb 2005 - 14:55
That is why I love portage, it gets everything you've installed via portage. I am glad Gentoo ported portage to Mac OS X, am not sure if it is stable yet or not, I know it only updates *NIX programs installed by it, nothing else of the core Darwin part.

Since when has Microsoft released "performance" patches? Please tell me where I can get these gems.
#10.1 SquareSoft0 on 17 Feb 2005 - 07:43
There are plenty in the download archives, for certain devices that don't meet current standards.
#10.2 Raa on 17 Feb 2005 - 19:58

I'm curious.
#11.1 Dirtie on 17 Feb 2005 - 06:13

Err half the news posts confuse me lately. They spend more time saying what its like and less what it does.

What is it ? Whats wrong with Windows Update?
#16.1 Ji@nBing on 17 Feb 2005 - 15:36
I was confused at first too, but now I understand. Windows update is for windows only. This will be for all Microsoft products including office, exchange, ect...

Try turning on the option for showing beta updates??
They're still launching the site, so expect problems
#18 J-Abad on 17 Feb 2005 - 21:35

This is the email I received....for more detailed info:

Dear Microsoft Update beta tester,

On Tuesday Bill Gates announced Microsoft Update, a new service that will be previewed in the upcoming Microsoft Update Beta Program* scheduled to begin in mid-March. During this beta, you will have the opportunity to test this new service and to provide valuable feedback to the Microsoft Update team.

Key features of Microsoft Update (MU) include the following:

· MU will offer security and reliability updates for Windows, Office, and other Microsoft applications in a single convenient location. Specific products and versions included in the beta will be identified in an announcement which will be sent to you in early March.

· MU will enable users to install security and reliability updates for Windows and other Microsoft products using Automatic Updates.

For the WUv5 Beta Program, we selected testers primarily for their Windows knowledge. As MU adds other products, we need to ensure that we have testers who can successfully test those products during the MU beta. To identify any gaps in our tester mix, I have released three very short surveys asking about your experience with Office, Exchange, and SQL. If you have expertise with any of these products, please complete the survey for that product. All three surveys are optional and do not affect your continued participation in the coming MU Beta Program. If you have not already taken them, they will be removed on March 3rd 2005.

Recall that beta participation includes your agreement to complete occasional surveys during the course of the beta. I have posted only one required survey, WU REFRESH, which takes less than two minutes to complete. Information from this survey is important to the internal MU team. As you get into this beta, you will find those two minutes to have been well-spent!

I look forward to working with you very soon.

Warm regards,

Roger Holland
Beta Coordinator
