- Its a really nice update, still slow on launch, but the nice new feature has to be the cleaned up installer.

- The first time I downloaded I used FireFox and therefore didn't use the Authenticate Windows feature...it installed as 1.0.501.
I then used IE and went thru the ActiveX Authentication...the download this time was a different size, and now reads 1.0.509. -

- Does it include a way yet to eliminate something from being tagged as Spyware in future scans? Ie. I still get a warning that FlashGet should be deleted which I have to override every time. Any way to omit that?

#11 Posted by Drestin on 18 Feb 2005 - 03:26
- OK - people are not crazy - something IS up.
I downloaded (using IE and validation) and got a installer (different size) than the original one. I tried an upgrade, no version change. Then I uninstalled, deleted the install directory, and installed using the new file again - still .501 - checked file dates and they are still the same as the older non-updated systems I have.
Something is going on (it IS beta) but what's really weird is that even a fresh install puts old files in place!! What's up with that?!
Anyone get the .501 thing and figure out how to get to .509?
-
#12 Posted by JOEWARE on 18 Feb 2005 - 03:28
- downloaded the setup file using firefox, installed it and it still shows 1.0.501. i downloaded it again this time using internet explorer, it's now 1.0.5.09.
-
#13 Posted by Drestin on 18 Feb 2005 - 03:35
- OK, this is weird.
I went to the main site at MS and downloaded every way you can name and kept getting the older version. Then I went to the newsgroups and someone there said, don't do that - get it from HERE:
Refresh Version
And blamo, NOW I'm at .509!
-
#14 Posted by NetRyder on 18 Feb 2005 - 03:51
- I got 1.0.509 on the first try. *shrug*
I use Firefox, but when I ever have to download anything from Microsoft, I usually tend to open up IE anyway.
-
#15 Posted by norseman on 18 Feb 2005 - 04:20
- Used firefox and got 509.. it notified me it was gonna update my current 501 version.
Did all perfectly.
-
#16 Posted by denzilla on 18 Feb 2005 - 04:35
- Validated and got 509 first try.

- It seems to think that my Firefox install is spyware. It's refusing it a connection to the net. Seems to be stopping some images loading in IE too...

- You think MS did this on purpose so Firefox users would get pissed off and switch to the new IE7?

- What's up with Microsoft and "refresh" builds?
-
#19.1 Posted by Jelly2003 on 18 Feb 2005 - 08:15
- I'll expect the Open Source tcommunity to start using that term shortly, one thing I've noticed is that a lot of open source projects seem to pick up MS naming schemes.

QUOTE This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads,
That made me laugh, when I installed the first beta, all I got were these huge and annoying pop up information boxes, and displaying all their special slide and fade effects seemed to slow my system down.
I installed that on my dad's computer at his house, and ended up uninstalling it because he was better off battling the spyware, rather then battling the supposed solution.-

yeah, that'd be funny, if it was. unfortunately the information pop-ups from msAS are exactly that; informational. If you get a popup saying something's trying to install itself on your computer, or inject itself into theregistry, or hijack your browser it will tell you about it, and in some cases you get to choose whether to allow it or not.
if you're getting a lot it could be you have some spyware not detected by msAS and you should look through the system explorers to see where something is injecting itself, or use another product such as adaware / spybot s&d to clear up the problem totally. Unfortunately, no anti spyware product has definitions for all types of spyware so it's always prudent to have a multi tier set up.
but of course, you seem like you don't give a s*it anyway, so why should i. they say ignorance is bliss. :>

- The "hide tray icon" bug is still there, you have to restart your computer to make it work.
I found some Commandline Parameters:
AutoUpdater: GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe update
Scheduled Scan: GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe -scan -schedule -withui -withresultsui
Spyware Scan: GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe -LaunchMode1
Spyware Quarantine: GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe -LaunchMode2
Settings: GIANTAntiSpywareMain.exe -LaunchMode3
Desktop Icon with all the commands (see image)

- Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over 50 ways spyware can enter your PC.
The worldwide SpyNet community plays a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, which are automatically downloaded to your PC, so you stay up-to-date.
Latest Changes:
* This download has been updated to include signature version 5687

- The one thing I dislike about the product is the slowness of those informational messages. When something is added to my startup (either folder or registry entry), Mike Lim's Startup Monitor provides a popup window Immediately. Then, about 10 seconds later, I get the popup from MS Anti spyware with the same info! Same for Active x Controls! Way too slow for my tastes. Will have to keep running manual scans for the time being...

- personally i think this microsoft anti-spyware program is pretty much not needed... they need to focus on more important things than worrying about programs like this since... programs like ad-aware and spybot Search and destroy pretty much got spyware removal covered...
they should deticate there time to windows security and IE security... basicallt rebuild IE from ground up and remove it from the OS ... i know it aint ever gonna happen in windows xp... but for windows longhorn IE should definately be un-installable. -
#27.1 Posted by shao on 21 Feb 2005 - 10:55
- first off msAS is in many ways better than both adaware / sbs&d, and are a lot easier to use, and generally more intuitive. plus it covers more areas, and provides better user interaction when potentially malicious things try to run / install themselves on your pc. none of these 3 products cover all malware though, so for better security a combination of various products is still worth while.
ms ARE working on an updated ie, which should address some of the more glaringly obvious security risks. a combination of ie updates, msAS, the ms firewall, and ms antivirus should help improve the security of xp out of the box, which is a big bonus.
