Two 128MB GeForce 6600 GT's in one PC, bridged together in SLI mode. That's what Guru of 3D is reviewing today. The cards are being made by that lovely company called Prolink, and the product series is of course PixelView. Is the SLI setup a worthy opponent to the GeForce 6800 GT ? You can find out in the 19 pages counting article.
When we look at Prolink's website the SLI package is not mentioned yet. The products are however 98% similar to the PV-N43E(128LD). There was one distinct difference though. When we verified the memory frequency we noticed that it is clocked higher then previously named model. It is running at default at 1120 MHz. Hey the more memory bandwidth the better!

What's new
  1. A new selection command “Select Group” – select similar files. E.g. pic001.jpg, pic002.jpg….
  2. A new command “Command Prompt” in the "Tools" menu. It opens a command prompt for the current folder.
  3. Multi-Rename Dialog – replace command can replace all occurrences of a string
  4. A new Multi-Rename Mode. “Insert” insert a string on a specified position in the file name.
  5. An option to disable the calculation of the folder sizes.
  6. A new set of quick move commands. (In “Edit” popup menu)
  7. “Move to tabs” – shows a popup menu to move the selected files to one the folders open by ExplorerXP
  8. “Move to subfolder” – shows a popup menu to move the selected files to a subfolder of the current folder.
  9. “Move to groups” – shows a popup menu to move the selected files to a folder from the groups.
  10. “Move to Parent” - shows a popup menu to move the selected files to the parent folder.

Hmm... this is pretty good, considering the fact that the 6600GT is a very reasonably priced card, probably enough to warrant getting two for some SLI goodness.

Hasn't SLI been around for a while now. I remember running two 12MB 3Dfx Voodoo II cards in SLI mode on ma PC ages ago.

Yup, but Nvidia brought out 3DFX and then just recently licensed there technology.

I think correct me if I'm wrong.

Same concept.

Scan-Line Interleaving (3dfx SLI)
Scalable Link Interface (NVIDIA SLI)

3dfx interleaved the lines.
NVIDIA SLI shares the frame into two parts, each part will require about the same amount of work.
NVIDIA's method is more effecient.

His comment should be removed to, because he doesn't explain why.

SLI mode sucks.
#4.1 bucko on 22 Feb 2005 - 13:38
could you care to explain why, not that I haven't read all 19 pages yet

Well, you didn't really see 3DFX use it after the voodoo 2 did ya? So, something must suck about it.

Looks like a single 6800GT is a better investment than 2 6600GT's in SLI mode.

I don't really like anything that makes PC gaming even more incredibly expensive - SLI technology just begs to double costs (not to mention heat, noise, and power consumption), and we're not even making use of all the potential that one video card has now.

Buy 2 6800 Ultra and you're all set

Yes I am. Dropped a bundle on 2 of them bad boys.

I have a single 6600gt PCIe and it will play anything i throw at it at good frame rates, just as long as the resolution is set to 1280x1024, which is a good res to play at anyway. I don't yet see a need for SLI 6800's or even 6600's, but some time the day will come when games are so demanding that a single 6800 won't be able to handle the graphics at a decent frame rate.

However. When that time comes, there will be newer technologies like DX10 that impliment features that the current generation of cards can't support. So its not all about the fps today, but also the features tomorrow - and saving an sli slot today can't help with that. For the next gen cards, enthusiasts will still need to buy new cards with the new features.

^^I agree in parts, remember what sli technology is very new then is necessary wait for more development principally in games thought

Did anyone else not understand this reply?
#7.2 Gobelet on 22 Feb 2005 - 19:03
He said someting like:

"I partially agree, you have to remember that SLI technology is really new; you have to wait for more support, and principally from people making games"

I think.

correct me if im wrong (which no doubt plenty will ) but it wouldnt be better than a single 6800gt for two reasons

a) the 6600 has less pipes than a 6800
b) despite them being both 128mb cards they do not pair the ram up to be 256mb.

of course b) might not be correct.

Read the review and SLI looks very good but it looks like it could be made better. I think I will wait (e.g. better drivers). I like the idea of the mobo manufactures supplying the card thing.
