Nearly two months after promising to update its media player software to block the threat of malware infection, Microsoft Corp. on Tuesday admitted that users of its Windows Media Player 9 Series remain at risk. Redmond has hemmed and hawed on its response to the threat and the circumstances of the latest admission isn't sitting well with security researchers.

When the first red flag was raised in early January, Microsoft made it clear that the use of rigged .wmv files to exploit the DRM (digital rights management) mechanism was not a software flaw. A week later, the company reversed course and promised new versions of WMP within 30 days. "While this issue is not the result of any exploit of Windows Media DRM, we do recognize it may cause problems for some of our customers," the company said in a statement. To help mitigate these problems, Microsoft said the software would be tweaked to "allow the end-user more control over when and how any pop-ups display in the license acquisition process."

Why complain if you're still using WMP 9? WMP 10 is free.
#2 p1xel on 02 Mar 2005 - 18:42
Only for XP is it not?
#3 andRUWeir on 02 Mar 2005 - 19:24
only for legal copies of xp

It;s not a problem for me, and for the majority of Windows users, because I use e legal license and media player 10. But I wish they still would release some 'patches' for fixes, especially those related to security, for older versions, such as Widnows Media Player 9. Just my opinion.
#5 Ianmac45 on 02 Mar 2005 - 20:42
actually, microsoft lets anyone download it...they just strongly suggest that you check the "legalness" of your copy

I see ms is at it again. and someone has the nerve to say well if your still using wmp 9 you deserve it thats dumbest thing i've ever heard! how long has wmp 9 been out now 2 years ? and yet they still have security issues. unacceptable if it took my employee's that long to fix a security issue in our software there would be 19 people in the unemployment line.

Thats jsut stupid.

WMP10 is basically the security fix for WMP9, get it? Good boy. heres a cookie.

And what about all of the people who for whatever reason are still using versions of Windows prior to XP (remember, many companies still use Windows 2000 because they have no need for the relatively minor upgrades that XP offers)? WMP 9 is the latest version that will work on those.

If you are "exploited" after seeing a message like this...

...you need to update your biological firmware.

^^ LMAO
#10 darkmark327 on 03 Mar 2005 - 01:45
So by "update" you mean "old version from a year or two ago"

And people are being a fool if you think WMP10 is any safer. EVERYTHING Microsoft makes has holes and spyware. They just pretend its a bug once its discovered.
