Following on from our exclusive story on Magneto back in January, it seems a build of the latest addition to Windows Mobile has leaked for XDA Pocket PC owners.

Originating from the xda-developers forum, several users have successfully ported a build from a HTC PH10B Himalaya device and onto their XDAs. The leak is significant and shows progress in Windows Mobile 2005 which is due to hit retail this summer.

Mobileread have the low down with several screenshots and information.

Magneto caused a stir in the blogging world after Microsoft lawyers sent several cease and desist letters to sites who syndicated Neowin's story.

Windows Mobile 2005 (magneto) is due to RTM shortly with a retail release on several new devices this coming summer.

Making home networking easier is a key focus in Longhorn; among the aspects made simpler are setup, discovery of network resources, access and use of networked resources, diagnostics, roaming, etc. Considerable effort is going into making file sharing simple.

Our principal focus in Longhorn is to "make WIFI a great experience", both for users and for managers. We are investing a lot on a great diagnostic service, so that users can quickly understand and correct issues with wireless services. We are also investing a lot on a configuration and management. Finally, the extensibility of the stack paves the way for future innovation.

We are focusing on several major aspects: simplifying the interaction with the various configuration and setup UI aspects to make them much simpler to navigate; providing a more unified way of looking at different types of networks and managing them, making discovery and use of networked resources quick and simple, allow users as they move from work to home and public spots to easily roam without onerous intervention on changing settings, and making sure that end users can quickly discover problems, fix them and keep on using their network connections.

There is going to be a Network Explorer in Longhorn that will show the PCs and devices on your network. Users will be able to organize the PCs and users in different sorting order and will show PCs in the different workgroups and domains.

It's barely working on the XDA . Each rom must be customised by the device manufacturer for it to work properly.

oh okay, thanks for the heads up.

Not true. MS is getting rid of the OEM Roms for 2005. Many people on usenet are reporting that it works fine on various devices.

Does anyone know if ActiveSync 4 works on Windows Mobile 2003 devices? I don't have an XDA, and if i did I wouldn't want to pwn it, but I want to try out the new sync app.
#11.1 Serenis on 23 Mar 2005 - 15:37
It works with 2003
#11.2 jeavis on 23 Mar 2005 - 16:24
Doesn't seem like much is changed in 4.0 except the look and some of the naming.
#11.3 divertom15 on 23 Mar 2005 - 20:03

[pout] meh... why do I care? My PocketPC is already over a year old and so an update will never be made for it again. I hate the way MS and HP are doing their update policy. The entire Pocket PC platform is made on a foundation of straw. [/pout]

well i have a 520 mhz toshiba e830 w/ vga i hope they release an update for this because id be pissed if they dont.
#14.1 nic on 23 Mar 2005 - 18:30
thats what sucks about the pocket pc platform. There is absolutely no standards in place for these devices. Microsoft will not support the Windows Mobile operating system, only support you get is from your manufacturer. I don't blame Microsoft, there is such a wide range of hardware out there, how can they?

So, in order to get an upgrade your manufacturer has to make a ROM update available for your specific model. (And it isn't just the OS, Windows Media Player 10 requires a ROM update as well...what a bunch of B.S.)

Now, the manufacturer already has your money, so what is their insentive to give you an upgrade? There is none, and their marketting department probably already figured out if they try to sell an upgrade they will be at a loss because most users won't bother.

I'm not sure about how well Toshiba support their users, but HP hasn't given me crap in updates. And they are needed badly. My Pocket PC is really buggy and requires a soft reset about every day; I have minimum 3rd party software installed. All they have given me is a SD Card reader update that didn't do a thing from what I can tell.

Buyers beware...

toshiba is bad with their upgrade, just search for e740 on google and ull see all the users upset about not being able to upgrade to wm2003 such a dissapointment, i put myself off buying a toshiba notebook for a dell one. toshiba will never get my business again i say, only if its really, really cheap or free of course

The problem with PDA's is that you can buy, or put a good downpayment on a nice laptop, considering how much they cost. And PDA's aren't true PC's.

They are very good for portable mp3 players though. And seem to sell well on ebay.

What "nic" said earlier in the thread is totally true.
