Reports that GMail could launch today have been dismissed after Google detailed new plans for popular "invite-only" service. Speaking to CNet News late yesterday, GMail project manager Georges Harik dismissed rumors that the one year anniversary of the email service would mark its public debut. Instead, Harik detailed plans to immediately double the storage capacity of GMail accounts from 1GB to 2GB. In addition, Google will continue to increase GMail account capacity beyond 2GB; effectively creating a limitless storage medium for users.
"One gigabyte did seem like a lot, but it turns out there are a lot of heavy users of mail," he said. "They send attachments, share photos. It all adds up."
Herik did not provide a timeline for a public release, but with Google currently handing out 50 GMail invites to each user, one would wonder if it even matters. In direct response to the initial GMail threat, leading email providers had to signifigantly increase their storage capacity. This latest move by Google will undoubtedly spark another storage race, benefiting email users everywhere.
Update: Looks as though storage space is already on the move. Google has posted a nifty counter on the GMail homepage, showing users a constantly changing storage count.

"Readily available digital video content remains a key driver for the portable multimedia player market," said Josh Martin, associate research analyst at IDC. "The proliferation and growth of video service providers will serve to fill the existing video content void and increase adoption of portable multimedia players such as Windows Mobile-based devices." A one-year premium membership to the MSN Video Downloads service with access to all available videos is $19.95 (U.S.). In addition, people can access a limited amount of free content without a paid membership

I hate this effin day.
I'm sure google's original gmail story of 1GB was made on April fools too .. and it did turn out to be true
This is no joke.
hehe 1Mb off, damn them and there aprils fool
i love the idea of not needing to delete emails
i cant wait to see whats next
I hope they keep the invite system in use permanently in all honesty.
but I think it's just a April Fool's joke
You know how many people they would seriously piss off?
Just Look At Their Past April Fools Jokes, Im sure it will be something like the
previous years.
Last Year At This Time They Launched GMail, Everyone thought that was a joke also
LATER EDIT: 1088 MB now

Google has the same info for us. And here's some even bigger news:
WE GET FRIKEN RAINBOWS NOW!!! w00t!!
You are currently using 1 MB (0%) of your 1088 MB.
Woot: And rich formatting of text.
Storage is an important part of email, but that doesn't mean you should have to worry about it. To celebrate our one-year birthday, we're giving everyone one more gigabyte. But why stop the party there? Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able. We know that email will only become more important in people's lives, and we want Gmail to keep up with our users and their needs. From Gmail, you can expect more.
You are currently using 61 MB (6%) of your 1110 MB.
it just keeps going up!
Edit: Yup, 1104 now, seems like a joke to me.
approx: .578MB/minute = approx: 1.156MB/2 minutes according to ticker on homepage
so lets say its 1MB / 2 minutes
and its an upgrade of 1024MB / which should be approx 2048 minutes
2048 minutes is approx 34.13 hrs to upgrade from 1Gb to 2GB at the speed of the GMail Home page counter.
At the moment, its up to approx 1116.000MB which means its been upgraded by 92MBs from 1024MB.
92MBs at 184 [2 minutes per MB] means its been running for approx 3.06 hrs which close to 12.00AM EST.
Now at 1116MB we need 932MB at 1864 minutes to get to 2048
So at this point at 1116MB, we will get to 2048MB in 1864/60 = approx 31 hrs.
can anyone else confirm on my bad math skills?

From 1250MB to 2000MB in 20,83 hours
BTW: You have calculated correctly, in 27,(7) hours from 1000MB to 2000MB.
hmmm
Gmail storage is consistently increasing. How are they doing it (increasing the storage continously).
if you look at the javascript, you can see its going to reach 2GB on Sat, 02 Apr 2005 11:00:00 GMT, after that it'll just say "Over 2GB". It started at 5AM this morning. I can't tell what the actual gmail page is doing. Try changing your date and time.
Also, google seem to think a megabyte is 1025 KB, and 2 GB is 2050MB...

"Man, if you pressure us, you just drive us away. We'll commit when we're ready, okay? Besides, what's so great about taking things out of beta? It ruins all the romance, the challenge, the possibilities, the right to explore. Carpe diem, ya know? Maybe we're jaded, but we've seen all these other companies leap headlong into 1.0, thinking their product is exactly what they've been dreaming of all their lives, that everything is perfect and hunky-dory – and the next thing you know some vanilla copycat release from Redmond is kicking their butt, the Board is holding emergency meetings and the CEO is on CNBC blathering sweatily about "a new direction" and "getting back to basics." No thanks, man. We like our freedom." Unofficial Press Release by Google™ on April 1, 2005
You can find the message here http://www.google.com/googlegulp/faq.html
It does appear to be a good joke, but it's regarding Firefox 1.0 and Microsoft plans to release IE7.
I think it actually refers to Gmail 1GB limit storage, now 2GB (more on the future), and how can Yahoo or Microsoft (Hotmail) ruin their dreams that Gmail will be the default web-mail service for everyone with ‘unlimited’ storage space (never delete a message).
