A British team of chip designers has won one of the most coveted of customers in the chip industry--Apple Computer. SiliconValleyWatcher has learned that Apple has contracted to use the powerful video, image, and music chips designed by Alphamosaic, in Cambridge, UK, in a future multimedia mobile device. While the kudos goes to the Alphamosaic teams, the money from the deal goes to Broadcom, the US communication chips leader. Broadcom acquired the 57 person Alphamosaic for about $125m in September 2004.

Of course they're woring on something. They're always working on something. It's called R&D, y'know.
What it will be? Well, it will probaly be something inovateive. That's been Apple's hallmark. Oh, and pricey. That's Apple's other hallmark.
But hey: they've got a nice big nice in the 'puter industry, and they're doing well.
I don't like the Mac, but I have to hand it to Apple: They've never turned away from the core of their philopsiphy, and they've been successfull as a buisness at the same time. Grated, they're not the near-monopoly Microsoft is, but they're still a stong player.

As far as the Brits making chips... I suppose that proves that you really CAN make chips anywhere, huh?

Innovative? There's loads of "multimedia portable devices" on the market - what will they add to it to make it any better?

Look at all the PMCs, mobiles and PDAs - they've done it all.

I doubt it'll be that innovative.

Who said it was going to be another "multimedia portable devices" i would bet good money it most definatley wont be.

Yes the iPod was innovative :

As for the dig at the Brits making chips, they'd probably be better of doing it over here. I mean the US would probably order them from Mc Donalds or Burger King!

Maybe it won't be innovative in terms of feature sets - but ease of use and sheer design? Apple's all about that. The iPod's navigation and current clickwheel are beautiful pieces of interface-design: clean, functional, and easy.

Being a Brit I must protest chips from our chippies rule

LOL! It looks like jobs is going to eat his own words!

Too little too late.

Yeah, those PMCs (that were predicted to kick the sh!t out of the iPod back at CES 2002) have really taken over and own the market!

There's no way Apple could introduce a better, easier, more compact device and leapfrog similar devices... Oh wait, that's what happened with the iPod...

Also, SlakeT, how do you know anything about this? For one, their existing chip is primarily used in... guess what... PHONES! For all WE know, Apple is building their own phone.

If they call it the "iPhone" im gonna kill myself. I am so sick of apple's "i" products.

But in the meantime, you are all to happy to keep saying it to yourself even though we don't know what it is or will be named? Bright...

dp123 - what are you smoking dude?

You compare a pocket pc with the ipod? LOL! Not even in the same class dude. The pocket PCs on the market today do alot more my friend.

Here's a little advice. Open your eyes and stop being such a drone sheep. The world doesn't evolve around apple. Wake up. Apples products are not always the best. Believe it or not some products are better. I know that’s really a hard concept for you to comprehend but it is true. Mr. Jobs isn't god either. He's a corporate pig who has you convinced that you cannot think for yourself. All he wants is your money (just like MS does).

response to #1.2- Apple started using the 'i' with the iMac, because of its easy access to the internet. Its now become a trademark of Apple to use 'i' with everything

response to #1.5- hmm... i do believe you are mistaken... not all of em are the best, but they are generally a lot better than their competition. Look at the size of the Mac Mini compared to other boxes. Just in terms of height, the Mac Mini is about 1/6th of the size of a full-sized Wintell (windows/intell) boxes. The Powermac is arguarbly the worlds best personal computer. The iPod just kills competition. Its got something like 65% market share of all portable music players, including diskmans.

Zenith -

response to #1 - the "i" use is way old. People got sick of the "e" and they are getting sick of the "i" now. I know ths because I work in advertising.

response to #2 - "generally a lot better than their competition" is opinion and a weak statement. The mac mini is total crap. Ever hook it up to a projector? A CRT monitor? It looks absolutely horrible. It only looks good on a flat panel. Useless to the general public. Good for rich boys.

Not true. Look at all the microATX boards and the boxes they put them in. BTW - Windows/Intel comment - Windows runs on other processors than Intel ones. Dork.

Maybe to a graphic designer but not to the rest of the world. And since you mentioned market share Windows boxes take up 92% in the world. Not that the figure matters really. LOL! Also- learn how to spell - get a dictionary or spell checker.

I never mentioned the Pocket PC. Seriously, Slake, I can teach you how to read if you'd like to learn. Only if you'd like to learn though...

So what if they do? I didn't make the comparison and it wouldn't change the fact that no one gives a sh!t. Now people care about music players.

What are you talking about?

You claimed they were releasing a video iPod (which you don't know). You claimed it was too late (which is absurd). I said Apple could easily be working on something else and could easily enter the market late and take it over just the way they did with the iPod.

If you'd like to actually read my comments and comment on them, maybe I won't treat you like the fool you are.

Ever heard of ARM processors? They were british too, until Intel bought them out...

I would have to agree with the whole "i" thing. It's getting old just like the "e" thing did. They also need to come up with something other than cats for their OS. They will eventually run out of names. Not a real smart choice.
