MTV: Music Television and Microsoft Corp. today announced a global marketing alliance to unveil the next-generation Xbox® video game system on MTV channels in the United States, Asia Pacific and Europe, all within a 24-hour window -- a first for the video game industry. The highly anticipated console will be revealed to video game fanatics, music lovers and MTV viewers via a high-energy half-hour program titled "MTV Presents: The Next Generation Xbox Revealed." The special will be hosted by entertainment icon, seasoned gamer and Xbox fanatic Elijah Wood, known globally for the Academy Award-winning "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Island Records' renowned Las Vegas rockers The Killers will deliver electrifying performances throughout the special. The global broadcast will premiere Thursday, May 12, at 9:30 p.m. EDT in North America and on Friday, May 13 in other regions around the globe (local air times below).

Viewers will get an exclusive look at the Xbox vision for the next generation -- one that ensures that the user experience is always connected, always personalized and always in high definition. The special will feature never-before-seen, action-packed gameplay of future Xbox games, a peek into the future of the Xbox Live (TM) online gaming service, backstage celebrity interviews and exclusive insider footage on the making of the next-generation console.

View: Xbox Home

The inside look at the next-generation Xbox will continue at MTV.com, where after the special, viewers will find extended event coverage including behind-the-scenes video, photos and other special extras. MTV.com will also provide ongoing in-depth coverage of the next-generation Xbox highlighting the latest news, product details and previews of hot next-generation games.

"We recognize and celebrate our viewers' passion for gaming and are excited to be working with Microsoft to launch such a significant entertainment product," said John Shea, executive vice president, Integrated Marketing and Sponsorship Development, MTV Networks Music Group. "We're proud that Microsoft considers MTV the premier global network to launch its new Xbox gaming console and reveal the first look to MTV viewers around the world."

"Just as MTV revolutionized the way the world experiences music, the next-generation video game console from Xbox will spark a revolution in how consumers experience games and other forms of digital entertainment," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of worldwide marketing and publishing for Xbox at Microsoft. I don't think Neowin should be posting such baseless rumors as....

oh wait, nevermind.
#3 startechstudios on 11 Apr 2005 - 15:29
I can't believe that this is coming out in the second half of 2005 and introduced on MTV and we still don't have a leaked pic of the unit yet. And I'm not talking about those photoshoped Pic I mean real leaked pics of the console.
#4 vetcashman on 11 Apr 2005 - 15:36
Why is there so much gaming news being put in the main section of neowin lately?

I'm not sure whether its a good or bad idea launching it before E3, but one things for sure, more people will hear about it.

Gaming is becoming increasingly about marketting, celebrities, "cool" bands, and hype. Surely it's not just me who would prefer a focus on great gaming experiences instead of half hour adverts on MTV with celebrities being paid to tell me which products I should buy?
#6.1 SVT on 11 Apr 2005 - 15:55
I hope Sony and Nintendo don't stoop to this level...
#6.2 Spielo on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:10
They'd be fools not to though, whether I like it or not (and I don't), THIS is where the industry is headed.
#6.3 threedaysdwn on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:12
I think Microsoft has shown an incredible focus on giving developers everything they need to enable them to realize their visions (with the least amount of worry regarding stupid things like certification requirements).

While I'm not too fond of MTV and this kind of junk, I think it's good that Microsoft is working on all fronts and really bringing the game to Sony - whose massive hype machine has been one of its greatest assets.

Gaming is no longer a niche market. More and more people are starting to play video games and guess what, that means more money will be poured into it. There will always be good games and games that suck, but the marketing aspect really has no bearing on that.
(1 reply) #7 WooHoo!!! on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:09
Nothing wrong with going to this level. Its smart. MTV kids don't know what E3 is so how do you tell them about Xbox 2. Show it on mainstream crap telly which they all watch. I don't care for MTV but this is a great decision.. You can't deny it.
#7.1 Spielo on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:15
Yeah, definately. It's a brilliant decision on Microsoft's part, I just hate how it further throws gaming down into the realms of celebrities, official licencing, and general hype.

Industry wranglings aside, it also shows how bad MTV has really gotten, this isn't the first time they've joined with Microsoft to try and disguise blatant ("super-liminal" if you will) advertising as some kind of TV show. Having said that, I suppose you could argue that MTV is based around showing 3.5 minute adverts for bands, so a 30 minute games console advert is a natural progression.

Personally, I find it depressing.
#8 Mystic413212 on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:27
your freakin depressing
(2 replies) #9 noping on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:27
Mindless crap MTV will now spoonfeed thier brainless Viewers more things to buy, not because it might be better then thier competion or have a nice libraray of games...

.... But becuase it is COOL since it is on MTV and because some lame ass celebrity who doesnt know a joystick from a gamepad, (but probably has a sex video out) is now saying Xbox is cool. These same celebrities will promote PS3 or Nentindo's Rev. if paid..
..
.. SO how they hell do people listen to celebreties on making puchasing decissions,,, boggles my mind..

But I digress.
#9.1 jmole on 11 Apr 2005 - 17:17
You said exactly what I was thinking.

The last thing I would want to see is the likes of Ja Rule or Ashlee Simpson promoting a console. I can see it in my head playing out now:

Ja Rule: "Yo yo yo, this console is fresh, its dope, its got gamez. Yea dog."
Ashlee Simpson: "This console is hardcore, rebellious, and badass, just like me!"

I know that they will not be on the show, but it is just what I picture it is going to turn out like.

I seriously do not know why people would base their decision on a celebrity. It seems like MS is going after the most gullible people. "Since Britney Spears endorses it I guess I should buy it considering Britney makes smart choices in life. Like marrying a backup dancer and walking in a gas station restroom barefoot." Please, this is such a lame promotion attempt.
#9.2 joseph- on 11 Apr 2005 - 18:44
Oh jmole, relax. Just because your console of choice is endorsed by Spongebob Squarepants and The Wiggles, it's no reason to be so bitter.
#10 WooHoo!!! on 11 Apr 2005 - 16:28
Yea, I hate it . Its so obvious you would think it would'nt work. But as with the generation today its easy pickings. Just try to ignore it and enjoy the substance if there is any.

It was on the gamers news, but now someone has moved it. Has it suddenly changed from being gamers news? Am I missing something?
#12.2 Daniel on 11 Apr 2005 - 18:07
cos its a first..
#12.3 IGx89 on 11 Apr 2005 - 20:48
First there was article #1 in the Gamer news, then another one (article #2, this article) in the Main news, then article #2 was removed, then article #1 was moved to Main news, then some other stuff happened that I forgot/wasn't here for, then article #1 was removed and article #2 was shown again. Phew!

It may be the first time I have watched MTV since the early 90's....glad its only a half-hour show because thats just about all the "hip" MTV programing I think I can stand watching
(4 replies) #15 imtoomuch on 11 Apr 2005 - 19:20
I like how people on Neowin put a bad spin on everything. Getting a sneak peek at XBox 2 is not a bad thing in any way. It doesn't matter who's hosting it or what station it's on because no matter what, we will see the power of the next generation consoles. I know I'll be watching it.
#15.1 Palverone on 11 Apr 2005 - 19:34
You have to understand it's WHERE it's being shown. The simple fact is for a lot of us MTV has lost its credibility YEARS ago and is nothing but a joke. They play their slime to the kids that are then brainwashed into thinking this is what music (and life) is like. I am curious about the X'2, but unfortunately I will NOT be tuning to or MCE'n that horrid channel to check out the torrid details where I can visit my happy game site the following day.

MTV can burn for all I care, I haven't watched that pile of muck since the late 80s.
#15.2 epple on 12 Apr 2005 - 08:26
You haven't watched MTV for 15 years, and yet you know exactly how it is today, brainwashing kids on a regular basis and showing them how life is. I like that.
#15.3 Palverone on 12 Apr 2005 - 19:53
wow smarty pants. you got me there. I have NEVER heard of the effects MTV has had on generations of kids, or have I occasionally been hit by it when surfing.

Oh wait.. should I edit my last comment? should I say "well except for the times I passed it surfing"...

Sheez
#15.4 epple on 12 Apr 2005 - 21:23
Yes, please do so.
#16 soloredd on 11 Apr 2005 - 19:31
I think I'll skip out on this one. I can't stand watching 2 minutes of that garbage channel and I just KNOW they are going to have some stupid VJs and music artists taking up the majority of the time.

I'll wait for the websites to post the info, thanks
#17 Neonemesis on 11 Apr 2005 - 19:33
Why is it such a bad idea that they are promoting it on MTV? its a brilliant marketing scheme and I think you guys need to relax. If you really hate MTV that much, then I guess you really dont care about the next xbox and shouldn't watch it. Its as simple as that. You can either read about some lame trade show where they showed about 250 people the new console, or you can watch it yourself on MTV, so you make the decision. Hell, if you dont want to that badly, just wait the next day and read about it on neowin, dont piss yourself about something as simple as this. If it's going to make them money, then its a great plan, and even if it doesn't, I dont think that just because they are promoting it on MTV is such a big deal. What if they did it on Nickelodeon, or ESPN? There would still be ppl complaining and bitching about it.

So I guess basically I'm just saying, keep crying if you are really that upset about, because no one wants to hear it.

Well, I've not watched MTV since the mid 80's, and I dislike MS, but I do love my XBox, so it's no skin off my nose to tune in for a short while to check it out.
#19.1 epple on 12 Apr 2005 - 08:27
Props to you!
#20 noping on 11 Apr 2005 - 19:56
I havent watched that that channel since early 90s.. I think I would rather get some respactable review of it on a site then from them..

For MS to use MTV to promote XBOX, sort of validates all the crap that is MTV, that is where my true problem with this promotion is.

MTV and the like (BET etc.) do a great disService to th youth of this nation, and MS should not advocate it.

#21 fahad on 11 Apr 2005 - 20:05
People watch MTV.
Microsoft target audience watch MTV.

I know it's cool to hate everything thats mainstream but you cannot deny that this isn't a good move on Microsoft's part.

Whether you like MTV or not this marketing move will get the message across

so im wondering how many times MTV will re-air this special....

and im also amazed they will be playing music...
#24 supersaiyanjericho on 11 Apr 2005 - 21:01
too bad I don't get MTV (I live in Canada) so hopefully someone is going to put some pics of the console somewhere.
#25 Rhialto on 11 Apr 2005 - 21:01
Isn't MTV = Microsoft TV?

ok, joke.

yes definitely solely judge a console on it's marketing campaign.

and honestly they could do worse.. elijah wood is a pretty hardcore gamer/nerd will wheaton style and the killers are a solid band. sure MTV is garbage but of all the channels that kids watch I'd say MTV is probably a better bet than any other network..
#31 aximxp on 12 Apr 2005 - 03:12
also you can get MTV with the mid-range cable packages in Canada

While I think G4/TechTV has become pure garbage, I think it still would have been a much better choice for Microsoft in this case. MTV though? Does anyone still watch this channel besides silly teenage girls?
#32.1 mx3 on 12 Apr 2005 - 05:10
Well, a lot less people get G4/TechTV than the people who get MTV. Plus they probably want a broader target market (silly teenagers) than just the people that watch G4TTV.
#33 crazy@5$ on 12 Apr 2005 - 04:15
I wouldn't be surprised if this started a race between microsoft and sony to unveil their new system first, and eventually they would get it down to one week from now

This is why PC gaming is on a whole other level from Consoles.
Always has been, always will be.

PC gamers actualy know the difference between a quality game and a POS.
Console gamers are sheep.
#34.1 akuma-x on 12 Apr 2005 - 07:13
I'm gonna have to say that is not true. Granted I play PC games allot, the PC gaming industry is very stale and has been for some time. You only have 3 types of PC games for the most part, FPS, RPG, and strategy games. All of which have done nothing really new besides graphics in the past few years. Consoles have way more game types to pick from and I think this next run of consoles are really going to push the envelope.

The only thing that xbox 2 needs its backward compatibility otherwise they will fail, lets hope that microsoft reconsider to add this

There is no marketable demand on backward compatibility.
How many people do you know who won't buy XBox 2 due to the lack of backward compatibility with XBox? You can be sure that MS has made a lot of market researching before making the final decision on the features of its next gen console.
Backward compatibility could be made by a 25$ additional chip but it would increase the price of the console by 25 bucks and much more potentional consumer would choose PS3 instead of XBox2 thanks to this difference of price than the count of the consumer who won't buy XBox2 with no backward compatibility with XBox.

I've heard rumors that MS are going to use the IBM/Apple G5 chip in the XBOX 2. What do people think or know about this?
#38 DodgeViper on 12 Apr 2005 - 09:03
What's wrong with MTV?

I think it's a great idea to show it on MTV, most people don't even know about E3 but everyone knows about MTV so it makes perfect sense to unveil the Xbox2 on MTV.
#39 cryptic on 12 Apr 2005 - 16:00
I really dont understand how so many do not see the marketing genius of this move. No, I do not watch MTV on a regular basis, but I do realize that the target market for XBOX most likely does. I suppose if you do not agree with MS/MTV reveal then you most likely are not in the target audience. As for all the complaints of it being on the front page, get over it already, please. Its news, its BIG news. There are ALOT of things posted on the front page that I could care less about, but you know what I do? I move on, and I dont post a comment about how much I hate it. I do love how people claim that MTV shows nothing but trash, but they havent watched in 15 years....
(1 reply) #40 KxLiquid on 13 Apr 2005 - 00:57
The thing is last time I watched MTV it had a 15min commerical break, so really the show is only going to be 15mins.
#40.1 dhitb on 13 Apr 2005 - 02:55
Also subtract the several minutes of out-of-key singing and non-Xbox related filler and we're down to about 20 seconds of actual Xbox 2 coverage.
