Advanced Micro Devices CEO Hector Ruiz said Wednesday during the company’s first quarter fiscal 2005 conference call that the company’s first server dual-core chips with two processing engines will be formally announced on the 21st of April, 2005.

“As some of you may know, we are ahead of schedule on our dual-core AMD Opteron processors. In fact, we’ve been shipping samples to customers since January… Therefore, in response to customer demand and because of our rapid qualification cycle we can confirm that we will indeed be launching our highly-anticipated AMD Opteron dual-core processor, the industry’s first x86 dual-core server processor, in New York next Thursday,” said Hector Ruiz, CEO and Chairman of AMD.

Am I the only one not excited about having to effectively cool two cores with one block of heat disspiation?

I just hope that it won't be just a paper launch.

#4 Im not sure about this as i haven't had time to look much into the tech myself so i have no facts on it but.

I would think it would be more of a concern trying to cool 2 seperate cores on one cpu socket than trying to cool a dual core cpu on one socket. Though i maybe wrong but im pretty sure two individgual chips on one cpu are going to produce more heat than 1 chip with 2 cores on one cpu.

But i'd rather hear the actual info from the testers themselves on this or from tomshardware or hardocp somebody like that to get the real facts about how it will impact heat.

Of course worse comes to worse just throw on a huge honking heatsink/fan or water cooling.
