Advertisement (Why?)
Purchasing technology can be frustrating—the minute you buy something, the new version becomes available. We understand this frustration and have created a program in cooperation with our partners to help alleviate it.

The Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Technology Advancement Program enables customers who have purchased Windows XP Professional (32-bit) to exchange it for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. You will need to have an x64 processor (the AMD Athlon 64, AMD Opteron, Intel Pentium 4 with EM64T, or Intel Xeon with EM64T) to run the new software.

Note: Orders for the Technology Advancement Program must be placed by July 31, 2005.

Since many of our partners are taking part in this program, you should check with your PC manufacturer to see if they support the exchange on your x64 computer. If they support the program, your PC manufacturer will be able to provide you with a CD that includes all of the right drivers and software specific to your computer. If you built your PC yourself or have purchased it through a system builder, you can make the exchange through the link to the right. Cost for shipping and handling of upgrade is $12.00 USD for domestic shipments and $22.00 USD for International shipments plus any applicable taxes.

Well, the new version uses Windows Update Agent (WUA) 2.0 in conjunction with its scan results and scanning. If it finds a product which needs a newer version or a new update, it will provide the necessary information about the update and a direct download link. It also will check operating systems and service packs. Windows NT will show up with a red X if it is the operating system used, this is because of the end of support for that operating system. Reports now list the most current updates that are installed and not yet replaced by newer updates.

Baseline Security Analyzer adds support for many new products, with widens the range of support it can give you for your programs and services that need updating. The new version also supports Windows 64-Bit edition and Windows XP Embedded Edition.

Updates with MSBA 2.0 Reporting:

  • Provide a "not yet approved" score for WSUS server administrators
  • Current Update Compliance (history) appears in the report
  • ‘Restart Required’ now shown in report
  • Now offers XML output for all update scanning
    • MBSA 1.2.x had XML only for MBSA-style scans, not /HF scans
  • Elimination of the blue asterisk ‘Note’ message for security updates
  • Locate update packages, KB and bulletin directly
  • Maximum bulletin severity and 3rd party related IDs

Error Messages are now handled in an easier fashion:

  • Many error messages made easily actionable
  • ‘How to correct this’ link in report
    • Opens new guidance in main help file
  • Main help and FAQ work in conjunction with error messages
  • Web site FAQ topic enhanced over time

This new version of Baseline Security Analyzer looks a very strong release. The integration with Windows Update Services is promising and something that I am pleased to think will ease the process of patching a system that needs it.

Is this really true? Seems like a hoax to me, cuz of
- the offer doesn't come from microsoft.com, but rather from a productorder.com page
- that page was created in MS Frontpage 4.0 (eh?)
- Go have a look at the Order Status Lookup page

A definite hoax IMO. I'm surprised Neowin didn't check these things before approving news like this beforehand...

Oh and I bet this site isn't owned by microsoft if somebody wantts to go and whois the site
#4.1 neufuse on 25 Apr 2005 - 11:37
it's legit... microsoft has used productorder.com for a lot of other things in the past also

and if you still dont believe it go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/upgrade/default.mspx which links directly to that site microsoft.productorder.com

You have to be suspicious if something doesn't look right.
#4.5 WeeJames on 25 Apr 2005 - 11:57
Exactly.. look at that site.. it looks like it was made by a 12 year old. No way in hell would i put my product key in there.
#4.6 C-Fu on 25 Apr 2005 - 13:59
Yeah well go ahead and give your COA and Product Key on a non-SSL'ed site
I'd expect nothing less from a Microsoft or a Microsoft-affliated site.
#4.7 jon86 on 25 Apr 2005 - 18:14
Huh? It is SSL'd. The webpage does look very poorly made. I chuckled when I saw 'Content Starts Here'.*

* Using Mozilla Firefox 1.0.3
#5 JimmyT on 25 Apr 2005 - 11:31
That's great news.
Local Microsoft Offices should have their copies in my opinion. I don't want to pay $22+taxes for a shipment from the US (which might be lost anyway) when there is Microsoft UK which could ship it much cheaper and safer.

And I will agree with C-Fu, the site looks weird, there are some "bugs" on this page, like the "Microsoft Worldwide" and "Site Map" buttons don't match the rest of the blue bar. Weird but has happened again when MS changes layout of their site about 1.5 year ago or so.

$22 US for international shipping? It's a cd!

You might get a gift with it. Like a sticker
#7.2 VikingStorm on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:41
Might be because they ship with DHL. Sending a less than 1lb package (when I was sending something) just to Canada was ranging from $45 to $60 from DHL, FedEx, UPS. Which is ludicrous. I ended up shipping by possibly less reliable but significantly cheaper USPS Global Priority ($12).

heh so throw the thing in a bubbled envelope!

for that much money id like mine packed in a bullet proof briefcase with big mister Ballmer escorting it to my doorstep

I am ineligable because I purchased Windows XP before March 30 2003, and even if I put my product key in, it might invalidate the existing key, charge the whopping $22USD, and after that x64 might not come in the mail because I'm inelegable. I'll wait till the trade-in is extended to before March 30 2003, and available locally. If not I'll just buy it new when it's available retail.

They want ya code typed in on a none SSL'ed page. Then they'll have a list of codes they can sell on their naughty products !

Doesn't look at all legit or professional to me .
#14 eAi on 25 Apr 2005 - 12:59
Looks kinda dodgy to me, you'd think they could make a page that would render properly if they could make an OS...

Edit: renders ok in IE, but looks terrible in Firefox...

Hey Mr. Gates, what about me? I built my own computer. I bought the parts and put it together. I didn't get a certificate of authenticity when I bought those parts. I bought my copy of Windows XP Professional. Is there any way that I can get the free upgrade too?
#15.1 eAi on 25 Apr 2005 - 13:31
If you didn't get a COA its probably not authentic and you either have an OEM version or a pirated version. Thats the point of a COA.
#15.2 memodude on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:53
COAs are ONLY for OEM copies of XP. Retail version have a cardboard folding thing with a holographic CD and a yellow product key sticker.
#16 Galley on 25 Apr 2005 - 13:17
I bought my copy of XP Pro on launch day, so free upgrade for me!

#19.1 sphbecker on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:29
I do not have a 64-bit computer, so I am not sure, but my guess is they want the billing information to cover the $12 shipping.

i got mahself a coa but mine is oem & i dont have a cd , just a restore cd , so am i eligible

wait, by July 31, 2005!??! How about if I don't plan to upgrade till the end of the summer?? Seems a little unfair to give such a short cut off. This pretty much forces me to either upgrade sooner than I wanted to or bootleg later as I don't have any intentions of buying a OS again just to get 64 bit.

And what's up with the date range for when the OS was bought? This is retarded.
#21.1 chisss on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:19
well if you dont plan to upgrade until the summer then you dont get the upgrade for free period. you will have to buy it. and I dont think anyone is allowed to talk about bootleg copies in here.
About the date range, it is not retarded. XP came out in 2002 i believe so it is perfectly fare to give those dates.
#21.2 AndyD on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:37
No XP was released in 2001. And I'm well aware of the policies of the site so need to point them out for me thanks. Like I said, I own XP Pro RETAIL and just don't like getting the shaft because of expiration dates.
#21.3 VikingStorm on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:47
Question... can't you order the 64-bit and still keep the 32-bit Windows on. I see no mechanism that would suddenly kill the 32-bit version since your product key was invalidated. The only thing that it might affect is Windows Update, but that is a one-time activation I believe.
(I think the date ranges were roughly based on when the first AMD64 chips were available?)
#21.4 threedaysdwn on 25 Apr 2005 - 15:35
The idea here (and I think it's a great one) is to give a free upgrade to users who BOUGHT 32-bit XP TO RUN ON A 64-bit SYSTEM because they had no other choice.

It's not to give everyone who wants one a free trade-up.
#22 chisss on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:16
does anyone know how much the 64-bit version is gonna cost?

#26.1 pHaez on 25 Apr 2005 - 14:57
I tried it with a legit OEM product ID and it won't go through either.
(1 reply) #27 ir0nw0lf on 25 Apr 2005 - 15:35
This program has always been designed for allowing a "upgrade" path from OEM-only versions, never for retail versions. Why they did this is a good question. I am a OEM System Builder and according to their website:

QUOTE
Qualified Software
In order for the Customer System to be eligible for Technology Advancement Software, the end user customer must have acquired qualifying Windows XP Professional software (Qualified Software) from a system builder:
Preinstalled on a fully assembled computer system (Customer System) or
Sold with a non-peripheral hardware component.

This clearly throws out retail versions. Sorry for all you who have a retail (non-OEM) version.

QUOTE
I tried it with a legit OEM product ID and it won't go through either.

I tried with a legit OEM product ID from my System Properties Windows, took it just fine.

Also, you do not enter the actual Windows key into any of the fields: the first field is the barcode #'s from the OEM version on the sticker just underneath the actual key, I tried the actual key, didn't fit the fields. The second field to try is the Product ID (right-click My Computer, left-click Properties, shows there).
#27.1 pHaez on 25 Apr 2005 - 17:10
Yes, that is exactly what I do, but after I enter my address and CC# and whatnot it says "We are unable to process your request at this time. Please try again. If you continue to experience difficulty please email customer service at ms64bitupgrade@productorder.com"
#28 nic on 25 Apr 2005 - 15:38
that is cool of microsoft to offer a free upgrade.
#29 xMorpheousx416 on 25 Apr 2005 - 17:09
From Maximum PC:

XP Home: Upgrade to Pro, then upgrade to x64. (will cost you another license)
95/98/Me/2000: SOL
Pro OEM: Contact your dealer.
Pro Retail: Trade in your Pro key for x64 free download.
x64 will not be provided as a stand alone Retail product.
x64 can be purchased preinstalled on prebuilt 64bit machines.

Now, whether or not any of that changes.....who knows.

Anyone catch this from that site?:
QUOTE
The installation of Windows® XP Professional x64 Editions will void any support with your PC manufacturer. One free support call will be provided by Microsoft for any installation-related issues. Additional calls to Microsoft support will be available on a pay-per-incident basis.

Are you guys sure this is only for XP Pro?
#36.1 VB Guy on 26 Apr 2005 - 01:21
It doesn't work. Once you get passed entering al of your info it returns an error (in small red text) saying that it's an invalid PID.
#37 scyphe on 25 Apr 2005 - 20:11
The whole thing stinks.. They should offer it to anyone with a valid product key. And not block usage of the x86-version. And the eligibility? Another silly stunt. People with x64-cpu's should be eligible enough. Since it's not being retailed they should just offer it for free download instead of smuggling it to OEM's etc.

Microsoft's Upgrade Site

On Microsoft's web site it says that if you built the PC yourself then you can make the exchange as well, so they have to honor it or otherwise it would be false advertising.

I love this. So, it only works on 64-bit processors. If you have the Windows XP 32-bit edition and want the Windows XP x64-bit edition, you'll need to spend more money to upgrade your processor. I smell a secret correlation between AMD, Pentium and Microsoft.

Doesn't have to be. If you were smart enough to buy a system that had 64bit CPU in it, then you can get the free upgrade OS, and it won't cost you anything. If you have a 32bit CPU, then why would you want a 64bit OS? It doesn't come with anything new, it's still WinXP SP2 based.

Poindexter, eh? Welcome to the 30's.

It's called "business," something that companies do to make money. However if 64bit processors were ****, then no one would buy them. But obviously that's not the case - users have been demanding the 64-bit version of Windows because Microsoft was considering not even releasing it (if memory serves).

The reason I was calling your comment stupid because it wasn't thought through at all. You probably just read the title for this article and went off on a rant on conspiracies and such.

Grow up.
#41.6 SquareSoft0 on 26 Apr 2005 - 18:37
Well, specifically they were considering making an IA-64 version of Windows XP which they scrapped. Who's going to run an Itanium on anything other than a server?
#41.7 Sage_Override on 26 Apr 2005 - 21:39
Next time, be specific before you go on a 5-year-old rant, you stupid son of a b*tch.

It's called business, eh? Go figure. How old are you anyway? I think you need to take a hard look in the mirror and ask yourself if you're really a grown-up that has too much time on his hands or if you're a kid who needs to stop pretending he's a grown-up. Don't lecture me on economics or big business, junior. It seemed strange that Microsoft would do this. That's all I was trying to say, but instead you insult me like a piece of garbage. Well, screw you, pal.

To anyone else saying relax and it's ironic for my ranting myself or any other BS, first of all, I don't take bullsh*t from people who see their way clear to blatantly insult me, especially from across the globe. Maybe you people take sh*t, but I don't. Stop telling me to calm down for not taking other people's garbage; I'm tired of it.
