Microsoft have issued a fix for Windows Media Player 9 & 10 that fixes color smearing or a bleeding effect when you play MPEG4 videos.
According to the knowledge base article at Microsoft, this is caused by the MPEG4 codec, sometimes using invalid motion vectors.
- SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 or 10, you may experience a color smearing or bleeding effect when you play some MPEG4 videos. This behavior often occurs when the video contains fast-moving scenes of varying colors.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because of an issue with the way that the MPEG4 codec handles motion vectors. Sometimes, the decoder mistakenly uses invalid motion vectors.

P.S. Numero Uno!
I have got round this by fiddling with the resolution while videeo is playing and sometimes it fools it into playing on the external screen, it's the same for projectors.
hmm...odd...I just tried setting my tv as the primary output and it works on the tv now and not the monitor. Must be a security feature
divx is good too but I hate the fact that it tries to install toolbar and other crap and send your system information to their servers when you install it.
nero codec is the most advanced with support for H.264 main profile. But it is limited to only play videos which are encoded using Nero.
ffdshow hasn't been updated in a while. It provides great quality with very low CPU usage. Also it has tons of options to tinker.
