Google puts brakes on Accelerator

Google has stopped allowing downloads of its Web Accelerator software, just days after it began offering the product.

Google cited capacity as the reason for putting the brake on downloads of Accelerator, which is designed to speed the delivery of Web pages. A message on the site said the company has reached its "maximum capacity of users and (we) are actively working to increase the number of users we can support."

A Google representative denied on Wednesday that the removal of the tool was connected to the security fears. "It is a limited beta," he said, "and we reached the capacity of users." The software was launched Thursday but within a day was causing concern among people when it transpired that the software cached more data than many people felt comfortable with, enabling individuals in some cases to log onto secure online pages of others.

Here are some key features of "Exact Audio Copy":
  • Usage of the Windows 95 and Windows NT ASPI Interface, so both SCSI and ATAPI CD-ROM drives are supported
  • Hidden sector synchronization (jitter correction)
  • Secure, fast and burst extraction methods selectable. Fast extraction should run at the same speed as other grabbers, but is probably not exact anymore. Burst mode just grabs the audio data without any synchronization.
  • Read error and complete loss of sync detection and correction in secure modes, as far as possible
  • Output of time positions of all non-exact corrections and listen to these positions
  • Copy of ranges of music data, not only tracks
  • Automatic Speed reduction on errors and fallback afterwards
  • Normalization of extracted audio
  • Usage of the Windows Audio Compression Manager (ACM Codecs) for direct compression e.g. to MP3 waves
  • Support for the BladeEnc DLL that is usable like an ACM Codec for online MP3 compression
  • Support of external MP3, VQF, RA and AAC encoders for automatic compression after extraction
  • Batch compression and decompression of/to WAV files
  • Compression offset support for exact compression/decompression
  • Detection of pre-track gaps
  • Detection of silence in pre-track gaps
  • Automatic creation of CUE sheets for CDRWin, including all gaps, indicies, track attributes, UPC and ISRC
  • CD player functionality and prelistening to selected ranges
  • Automatic detection of drive features, whether a drive has an accurate stream and/or does caching
  • Sample Offsets for drives with no accurate streams, including the option of filling up missing samples with silence
  • Option for synchronizing tracks for non-accurate stream drives
  • Filename editing with local and remote CDDB database and cdplayer.ini support and more features like ID3 tagging
  • Browse and edit local database
  • Certified Escient CDDB(TM) Compatible
  • Local CDDB support
  • Record and Loop Record functions for recording from LP, radio, etc.
  • Automatic rename of MP3 files according to their ID3 tag
  • Catalog extraction function
  • Multisession (CD-Extra) support
  • CD-Text support
  • CD-Write support for some drives
  • ID3 Tag editor with drag and drop possibility from track listing and database
  • Glitch removal after extraction
  • Small WAV editor with the following functionality: delete, trim, normalize, pad, glitch removal, pop detection, interpolation of ranges, noise reduction, fade in/out, undo (and more)
  • Program is Cardware, so feel free to copy

Good that they stopped it.

>when it transpired that the software cached more data than many people felt comfortable >with, enabling individuals in some cases to log onto secure online pages of others.

Logging on as someone else on secure page is really bad. Google better test your product before releasing it as "beta". If you need help in testing drop me a line I will do.
#3.1 Kushan on 11 May 2005 - 18:44
Don't you know what a "Beta" is?
#3.2 nw_raptor on 11 May 2005 - 20:25
^ That's funny! My guess is that *you* don't know what a "Beta" is. Even for a BETA, the security issue is critical, and thus not acceptable. How on earth did such a 'bug' get away? I say they did no testing whatsoever. And since they put no testing into it, why are they releasing it (even in BETA form)?
#3.3 dannymp3 on 11 May 2005 - 23:26
Ever heard of internal betas? Which is what this should have gone through to fix security flaws before it was released to public.
#3.4 Hankyone on 12 May 2005 - 00:10
ok lets say it was an alpha
#3.5 ricknl on 12 May 2005 - 09:59
It doesn't matter if it was alpha, beta or gamma. The point is that it was released to public for further testing with such a big security hall.

You cannot say it is acceptable if Longhorn (for example) starts sending out your personal information, your usernames and passwords all around because it is in (pre)alpha phase (and it is not even release to public for testing). However it is perfectly understandable if it crashes or performs poorly.

Whether it was public or not shouldn't make a difference, but major security issues should not be allowed to carry into beta stages. Google doesn't allow Google Web Accelerator to accelerate secure pages (ie https), but may have sent persons to other person's member pages.

Yeah right, capacity. Google is just trying to make even MORE money they already do. They're losing focus of the customer base and being that cool unique company in order to sell out and make more money.

Screw'em. They suck. Yahoo > *
#4.1 Zeitgeist on 11 May 2005 - 18:13
How exactly are they losing touch with the customer base?
#4.2 nic on 11 May 2005 - 18:17
wtf are you talking about?
#4.3 Kushan on 11 May 2005 - 18:45
Tell me oh mighty one, how are they making MORE money by stopping the download of one of their products?
#4.4 Rekoil on 15 May 2005 - 14:24
man you dont even know what youre talking about. yahoo are the ones that suck man. google is WAY better than some ****ty ad-cluttered yahoo. just compare the websites man

Damn you Google, you STOLE MY NEOPETS PASSWORD, DAMN YOU!
#7 Beast_4thHM on 11 May 2005 - 23:01
yea... I kept getting full errors lately and it wasn't helping my browsing - so I guess it did reach the limit
#8 Chode on 11 May 2005 - 23:24
'sif it's not about the security problem.

they obviously couldn't think of a way around it, so unplugged the Accelerator.

Thank God because I don't want Google to go down again... I was in the middle of searching through Google for a project I'm doing and could not remember the page I search for and still can not remember... I need a new brain...
