At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2005 in Los Angeles, Microsoft today announced it will release a free software update to Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005 that will enable customers to take advantage of the Media Center Extender technologies built into Xbox 360 (TM) gaming systems to access and enjoy digital entertainment anywhere in the home. Every Xbox 360 will have Media Center Extender functionality built in and available out of the box. The Media Center Extender functionality, coupled with the software update for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, will provide customers with seamless access to digital music, video, photos, and standard and high-definition television and movies on Media Center Edition 2005-based PCs through any Xbox 360 game console in the house.

Particularly impressive though was the volume of new franchises. We'll bring you more details on them all shortly, but SCEJ's Eyedentify was particularly impressive - a game that involves being the operator, your EyeToy-ed face splattered over comms devices and PC screens in-game, and talking to two very saucy female assassin-esque protagonists; as was WarHawks, with its fleets of aeroplanes and floating aircraft carriers streaming across the sky.

But the biggest impression was probably left by MotorStorm from UK-based Evolution, which threw so much mud and so many explosions at the viewer that we lost count. Mud would splatter the screen, the guy would glance at the speedometer, the wipers would come on - only for a bike to land on the windshield and the car to be propelled through the air and explode, and the camera move on to the next one. Hyperbole is inevitable, but it's difficult to express just how "exhilarating", "jaw-dropping" and all the rest this stuff really is in light of what we're used to on the current generation of machines.

In addition to what's on the list below, we also saw KOEI pledge two further games, Factor 5 talking about their support, and video of an as-yet untitled Rockstar game that smacked very heavily of Red Dead Revolver. Grand Theft Auto was alluded to at one point by Kaz Hirai, who said that it would be fascinating to see where franchises born on PlayStation (including GTA, Metal Gear and Gran Turismo) went next, but Rockstar and Sony stopped short of full confirmation.

Finally, while Square Enix showed off a video of the PS2's Final Fantasy XII (and spoke of a "fiscal 2006" release date), and pledged to take Final Fantasy to PlayStation 3, the highlight from them was a tech demo of the introduction to Final Fantasy VII shot in real-time on PS3, with Advent Children levels of detail. Square Enix is not remaking it, Yoichi Wada told us, but the audience certainly appreciated the sentiment.

The following list represents the full software line-up, most of which appeared in video form to some extent. We'll link to screenshots of as many of them as possible shortly.

Devil May Cry 4 (Capcom)
Eyedentify (SCEJ)
Fifth Phantom Saga (SEGA)
Fight Night Round 3 (EA Sports)
Final Fantasy (Square Enix)
Formula 1 (Liverpool Studio)
The Getaway "Screen Test" (Team Soho)
Heavenly Sword (Ninja Theory)
I-8 (Insomniac)
Killing Day (Ubisoft)
KillZone (Guerrilla)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (Konami)
Mobile Suit Gundamn (Bandai)
MotorStorm (Evolution Studio)
NioH (KOEI)
Oni (KOEI)
Tekken (Namco)
Vision Gran Turismo (Polyphony Digital)
WarHawk (Incognito)

Good; one more reason to buy one.

Yay
#3 SFalcon on 17 May 2005 - 16:29
This is very cool. I have the extender for the Xbox now, but it'll be nice not having to pop in a DVD to access my media.
(1 reply) #4 MetaLRasaM on 17 May 2005 - 16:30
i guess it means i dont have wait for a mod chip to get XBMC...still not as good as XBMC...but should do the trick.
#4.1 ThaCrip on 18 May 2005 - 07:40
either way... the modchip is still the best route... u can almost guarentee it
(3 replies) #5 ernicoats on 17 May 2005 - 16:33
so you have to pay an arm and a leg for the media center pc to access your media from your pc. well that just sucks i build my own pc's and dont want to buy a media center pc for playing my media.

XBMC is what i have now and its the best thing for the xbox just wish that they wouldnt require you to have a media center pc to get your media off windows.
#5.1 RanCorX2 on 17 May 2005 - 16:38
umm, i assume you mean if your talking about othe media files not used in normal windows?
#5.2 SFalcon on 17 May 2005 - 16:44
You can get MCE 2k5 from NewEgg, you don't need a whole new PC to get it anymore.
#5.3 EWC on 17 May 2005 - 17:16
Yes, build one yourself. It can be done without spending alot of $$$$.
#6 johndotcom83 on 17 May 2005 - 16:37
you dont need to buy a media center box, you can build one pretty cheap
#7 AndyD on 17 May 2005 - 16:40
what video is supported anyway? Just windows media? Or will it play if the codec is on your pc? Just curious. I would be willing to part with my xbox if I knew I can still do what I can currently do with XBMC/Xbox.
#8 JEDI007 on 17 May 2005 - 16:43
Does this mean I won't be able to log into XP to get files, i'll have to get a whole new operating system............thats frickin retarded if so.
#9 Dairyface69 on 17 May 2005 - 16:46
JEDI007, thats not what this is saying.
#10 CiQuat on 17 May 2005 - 16:48
I had no intention of buying an XBox, but for this I might change my mind - if the price is right.

Xbox 360 is gonna be so sweet... I gotta get me one.
And Xbox Live will be free!
#14.1 Dirtie on 18 May 2005 - 03:00
Only the "silver" version.
Nintendo has just said that all it's games will be freely playable online on the Rev, as well as being able to download N64, SNES, and NES games to play.
#14.2 DigeratiPrime on 18 May 2005 - 14:22
Dirtie, do you have a link? That would be great news!
(6 replies) #15 magik on 17 May 2005 - 18:02
I'm confused now, I have the same question JEDI007 has. You need the Windows Media Center Edition in order to grab files off of it from the Xbox 360? You won't be able to do it with Windows XP (Pro)?
#15.1 werejag on 17 May 2005 - 18:04
its windows mce extender not winodws xp extender
#15.2 magik on 17 May 2005 - 18:07
That's so lame then, why would they only allow it to communicate with WindowsMCE and not standard XPs?
#15.3 joseph- on 17 May 2005 - 18:30
Because that's one of the features of MCE, perhaps? If Windows did everything possible in every situation...they'd probably just get sued again.
#15.4 magik on 17 May 2005 - 19:01
lol, true
#15.5 Litespeed on 18 May 2005 - 01:20
EDIT: Apparently you can't load media from the xbox to PC over the network yet. Might come in the future.

It is Media Center Extender, to work with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with an update.

XBOX360 is looking much better than the butt-ugly PS3..
#16.1 cheesegoduk on 17 May 2005 - 21:57
Tell me about it, The new PS3, whist powerful is, is massivly ugly..... it appears to be huge and comes with one of those horrible DVD drives that suck in the DVD's and spit them out, which are horrible to clear should anything get stuck....
Although the tech demo for the new PS3 showing the openning trailer to Final fantasy 7 had me in goosebumps... shame its only a tech demo :/

Atually this wont be a small update for 2005 intead its being bundled and added into Media Center 2006 which is codename emerald. its not an all new OS just a free downloadable update for owners of MCE 2005
#17.1 magik on 17 May 2005 - 19:06
Hopefully there will be something for XP also. Or maybe some kind of support/similar MCE functionality built into Longhorn to communicate with the Xbox360.
#17.2 soothsayer on 17 May 2005 - 20:51
Or hopefully there will be a free third party software that can do similar things between xp and xbox360.
#17.3 IGx89 on 17 May 2005 - 20:57
I wouldn't be surprised one bit if someone made a MCE emulator even before the Xbox 360 is released...
#18 SlakeT on 17 May 2005 - 19:38
WOW! I can't wait!

Does this mean Tivo-like functionality? I'm still clinging to my series 1 Tivo before I know if XB360 could replace it.
#19.1 BigBoy on 17 May 2005 - 22:39
Note here - they are saying "Extender" and with hard drive being what - 40GB, this is really extender only.

What this means is that if you had a Media Center Edition PC installed somewhere in your house, you could bring that experience and functionality to your TV through XBOX 360. Just like it is now with XBOX. However, what is cool is that the 360 will have it built in, so there is small bootup and load time and no special title that has to be in the XBOX to have this functionality.

With those 2 components in, you can definitely replace Tivo. But XBOX 360 alone will NOT DO IT. The hard drive space alone is a giveaway as it would hold very few hours of TV recording, even at regular definition (not to mention hi-def!)
#19.2 Ironman273 on 18 May 2005 - 12:31
So are you saying that with the XBox 360 and a MCE PC somewhere else in the house you could do Tivo?
(1 reply) #20 warwagon on 17 May 2005 - 20:19
will it play xvids?
#20.1 Treefrog on 18 May 2005 - 15:56
Inquireing minds want to know. If not, I'll just buy a few old XBoxes and mod them to my liking (big hard drive, linux and media center) . Then the 360 can just do it's job as a game machine.
(1 reply) #21 nic on 17 May 2005 - 21:51
i don't understand why everyone is asking questions that clearly no one has answers to yet, .

It is all just marketting crap at this point, gang. Wait until there is something physically out there that you can buy and use and then ask questions.

It seems to me that it should just have 802.11 wireless and be able to play music and video from windows shares... i don't see why they have to go crazy with "extenders" and what have you...
#21.1 beatlesdb on 17 May 2005 - 23:58
Media extender will allow the Xbox to stream media files from a Windows Media Center PC - this negates the need to have explorer like utilities on the xbox. The fact that it has wireless does not mean you can just brouse the network for files.

This makes streaming media easy but at the same time restrictive.

It would be cool if they gave XP Pro the same media extensions - not sure if they have already done this.

double

this is great. I've expected this. Now can I play my damn Xbox games on the Xbox 360?
#23.1 Denver_80203 on 17 May 2005 - 23:54
yes.. slashdot has article stating backwards compatability emulation. since it's 3 3.2 processors emulating a .7 I figure that means no problem

Un-seconded and un-motioned. PS3 will pwn, but I admit it will have some hot competition this time.
(1 reply) #27 eminem213486 on 18 May 2005 - 01:10
uhm, if you guys havnt seen the new guide yet, wtf are u all rambling on about, on the screenshots there is a MUSIC, and PICTURES, then MEDIA CENTER EXTENDER options. music and pictures should be able to acess your media shares across the network, being a media center extender is only a "really big" extra feature for us with MCE pcs. we will be able to do everything we already do with mce just not be with the computer next to the tv. there will be LIVE TV, THE GUIDE, MOVIES< MUSIC< PITCTURES etc. they showed it all at last nights press conference. (e3)

the only thing that kinda weirded me out was there was no option for MOVIES on the plain xbox guide (yes movies was on the mce extender part).... maybe they just hadnt added it yet... yep thats it.. lolz..

so i repeat, MCE extender functionality is diff from the media hub that microsoft has been spewing with the 360. hello access to shares, and removable media.!

btw, looking at this pic makes my spine tingle http://bitterapple.mine.nu/mediacenter.jpg

Music and Pictures on the Xbox 360 guide is to stream music directly for portable music devices connected to the 360, and view pictures from digital cameras connected to the 360 respectively.
(1 reply) #28 James_T on 18 May 2005 - 13:22
Hmm. There is a add-on for WinXP called "Windows Media Connect".
This tool is streaming music, videos,... and so on to digital media receivers.

So why is it not possible to access this one with the xBox 360 too ???

#28.1 Primalgoo on 18 May 2005 - 14:35
This is one of the smartest statements yet.... I was wondering what that Windows Media Connect update was... Me thinks we know now.... the GODLIKE XBox 360 !!!! ---- No seriously if you are right man... ANYONE would be ridiculous NOT to want one of these !!!

#29 Treefrog on 18 May 2005 - 15:52
Looks like they're trying to push the MCE sales to me. Don't want it. If the XBox can play video files (duh), just give me the ability to browse my network for files and leave me alone with the rest of the proprietary vendor lock in. I don't want it.
