Mozilla has just posted the first of their Firefox 1.1 preview releases, intended to give developers and open-source enthusiasts a chance to get their feet wet with the upcoming "trunk-based" release. Firefox 1.1 will take advantage of numerous rendering and stability enhancements, thousands of bug fixes, and several new features like a "settings sanitizer" and a redesigned browser option interface.

For those of you who follow Firefox development, Deep Park Alpha build is nothing more than a stabilized or "glorified" nightly trunk build. Remember that Deer Park Alpha 1 is not considered to be usable in a production environment or on systems containing important information. DPA1 is also branded differently than a regular Firefox release, installing files and shortcuts in a special program folder.

Deer Park Alpha 1, a preview release of Mozilla Firefox 1.1 aimed at developers, is now available for download from the Firefox project page. Previously referred to in planning documents as the Deer Park Developer Preview, the Firefox 1.1 Developer Preview and Firefox 1.1 Alpha, Deer Park Alpha 1 is aimed at developers and testers rather than regular end-users. In an attempt to dissuade end-users from downloading the preview, Deer Park Alpha 1 does not use the standard Mozilla Firefox branding. Deer Park is the codename for Firefox 1.1.

yes yes it is
Quote this comment #1.2 Posted by bush on 02 Jun 2005 - 04:32
no, it's not radical, it's just new ugly options inteface
Quote this comment #1.3 Posted by Dukeicon on 02 Jun 2005 - 08:33
the options look like that in the nightly builds, so it is more than likely that it will be 'normal' in the final version. Just have to wait and see.
Quote this comment #1.4 Posted by waz on 02 Jun 2005 - 11:08
No, it's the newly redesigned options interface. For best readablilty, tabs are supposed to be at the top of a page, not the side, and everything is better organised, rather than having something that doesn't fit in the old sections bunged in "advanced".

Note how it looks a lot like options windows in OS X

I'd have downloaded it but I don't like the term, 'Deer Alpha' for some reason.

Seems slower??
Why the strange name too?
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by Ava3ar on 01 Jun 2005 - 23:08
because its not for general public, its for developers

the reason for hte name is to distinguise between official and beta

I hope my themes/extentions still work.
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by Ava3ar on 01 Jun 2005 - 23:09
alot of extensions were made compatible whilst in hte trunk but there are stil alot that arent

thats one of the reasons for hte release so that developers can get there extensions upto compatablilty
Quote this comment #9.2 Posted by alerosenfeld on 02 Jun 2005 - 18:05
For me its half-half, for each working extension, I have one disabled. Too bad there are some good ones blocked, like AdBlock, I was startting to like it, now i'll have to go back to 1.0. And no themes work, weird, they dont even appear in the themes window.

Can I install this along-side my 1.0?
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by Ava3ar on 01 Jun 2005 - 23:11
yes you should be able to, although it is recommended that you make a new profile due to the theme/extension code being changed and some of these changes make themes incompatible in either

e.g. if you apply brushed in DP then it will look wrong in official. also if you install in official it wont be recognised by DP

I like the new icon/logo

Oh...and this browser seems a little faster than Firefox 1.0.4 (but I've only been using it for 2 minutes so maybe I'm mistaken).
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by David R. on 02 Jun 2005 - 04:29
The new icon/logo is purely to help non-techy people from thinking this is a general public release.
Quote this comment #17.2 Posted by elliot on 02 Jun 2005 - 06:44
This logo looks much better though.

So far I'm thrilled. I'm noticing a tremendous rendering improvement, generall better snappiness, and a quicker load time on my 3.2 P4.

I'm not flaming, but why is this such a big deal? It's only a few bug fixes, a few more features and a new look settings panel...
Quote this comment #23.1 Posted by mr_demilord on 02 Jun 2005 - 07:09
Read the article again, there are thousands of bugfixes not a few!
Quote this comment #23.2 Posted by Cubiz on 02 Jun 2005 - 11:42
Is there a list of bugs being fixed? How do we know Mozilla aren't just saying "thousands of fixes" to attract more downloads?
Quote this comment #23.3 Posted by Surr3al on 02 Jun 2005 - 16:01
Yeah, Bugzilla lists all bugs wiht mozilla products.

The link above lists all closed bugs.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #24 Posted by mattisking on 02 Jun 2005 - 06:04
You're mostly right... but there's more that you don't necessarily see. The rendering engine in Firefox has not progressed for a long time. It's developed separately and when Firefox "branched" from the Mozilla trunk it stuck with a (now) very out of date version of the rendering engine. So, while it may not seem like much to the naked eye, the "innards" have far more than just some trivial bug fixes and a new settings panel. There's really a LOT in there.

I don't like the Sub-Tabs in the Options Window. It is very confusing and requires more effort to accomplish a task, instead it should scroll. I like having all the Privacy options on one screen, so I can clear them all at once, rather than use that stupid Sanitize feature.

And why can't I enable/disable exactly what Javascripts can do anymore, it's just categorised as "but disable common annoyances". I'ld like to decide what's annoying myself, because I don't know what exactly qualifies under that description.

And they used to have a "Plug-ins" button that is now part of "Download Actions". Sure the old Plug-ins button Window had these Ugly Blue Ticks that were hare to disable with keyboard shortcuts, but the new "Download Actions" Window requires that we have to go into ANOTHER Sub-Window after that and select "Save them on my computer", there should be a tick box (that can be used with Windows shortcuts) on level up. (And the ESC key doesn't work on these new windows either)

Currently running, All the extensions works took over all my settings and feels very stable and faster.
Only in the options menu some cosmetic litle things.

Hmm, Am I the only person who doesnt notice any difference in rendering speed?

yes, i have cleared my cache, and re-installed extensions etc, new profile for DP Alpha.

I'm a major FF Fan, but I'm yet to be totally shocked by this build.

Nevertheless, a new FireFox build is always good! When It hit's final, I'll be downloading and using, of course (who runs old versions of software?:dead

Why does firefox always get front page and other browsers get Software news? I mean, this isn't even final yet, i don't see why it should be FPN.

"JavaScript Console" pops up everytime I hit [PageDown] and I checked the settings and about:config but don't know how to disable it. Is it only for me? This thing is by design for debugging?
Quote this comment #32.1 Posted by yakumo on 02 Jun 2005 - 10:06

Ive noticed one fix in javscript anyway.... try to shirnk this page in Firefox 1.0.4 http://goeshere.com/firefoxdemo.html

then try it in the new alpha.

The Javascript is creating the two rounded corners btw.

(Oh and althought you can install them alongside each other you cant run them simultaneously, you have to close one to start the other, trying to run the other when one is already running will simply open what you have running and not the other)
Quote this comment #33.1 Posted by Ava3ar on 02 Jun 2005 - 16:18
i found that on linux anyway

if you open official, and then open dp then you will open each individual

but if you open db, then open official it will just open another dp instance

This version is a BIG improvement off v1.04, even if it is alpha, its still very good. Love the new thumbnail tabs and the smaller menus!!!
