As part of its effort to assuage European authorities, Microsoft has made changes to its Windows XP N--the slimmed-down version of the operating system it was ordered to offer last year.

Microsoft said on Wednesday that the revamped software will be made available to computer makers next week in five language versions and will be available for retailers July 1. Ten additional language versions will go on sale in July, Microsoft said. The software will be available in Home and Professional editions and is priced the same as the full-featured versions.

I can't see the point in this. People will just buy the one with media player. Especially if they are priced the same.

I think the point was that the EU wanted to make sure people had the option to not use Media Player. Of cource they cost the same amount, Media Player is a free product, so they would not charge less for not including it.
Quote this comment #1.4 Posted by mr_skrilla on 09 Jun 2005 - 00:19
it is all really pointless... if you don't like Media Player then you can uninstall it or install some other program....
Quote this comment #1.5 Posted by shao on 09 Jun 2005 - 08:21
pointless for xp, maybe. But what does it mean for the future of windows? will we see longhorn N?

During the install process, user's could be given an option to choose whether or not to install WMP, and are also given information for alternative products perhaps.

Yeah I can see it now "Thank you for choosing Windows XP Pro. Have you tried Linux yet? Or maybe you would Prefer a MAC instead?" Dont think its typical practice to give information for a competetor's software during ANY install. Why should Microsoft have to give information for alternative products? I agree with the option to choose to install or not to install WMP during the windows installer process but giving alternate information for a competetor product would be just stupid.

When I studied for The SATs, I had a box of 800 vocabulary words that came up often on the test. They were ranked in order of frequency, and guess what.. assuage was the first word (and the ONLY word I remember)...

Assuage - to relieve

Example: Studying my SAT Vocabulary will assuage my fears of doing poorly on the SAT.

The vocabulary one uses should reflect the comprehension abilities of the target audience. Just like how you wouldn't say, "good boy," at a university or, "wisenheimer," at a kindergarten.

Its been on the market like 4 or 5 years the people who will be buying this wont create a large enough volume of sales to shift Microsoft's monopoly on the media player market.

This whole thing is just stupid.
Quote this comment #3.1 Posted by rm20010 on 08 Jun 2005 - 20:46
It's only about giving the customer choice on whether or not their copy of XP comes with WMP or not. But honestly I can't imagine just how many copies of XP N will be sold. Probably less than a thousand.

I was hoping that XP N wouldn't be the same price as regular XP Home/Pro ..but this is typical Microsoft hard at work
Quote this comment #5.1 Posted by Rudy on 08 Jun 2005 - 21:43
why would they change the price?? i mean the use can go and download media player from the internet in 2 sec, its not like you cant install it
Quote this comment #5.2 Posted by DJROrion on 09 Jun 2005 - 14:07
WMP is a FREE piece of software. Why would it lower the price to not include? If anything it should raise the price to cover the expense of having to re-distribute and re-code an existing piece of software.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #6 Posted by Kushan on 08 Jun 2005 - 21:46
Why couldn't they just make a version of XP with WMP as an OPTIONAL install? Wouldn't that create the same effect?
Quote this comment #6.1 Posted by Dayon on 08 Jun 2005 - 21:54
No. That would create more uninstalls of Media Player than this would, and its better for them if more people have it.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #7 Posted by Shibby on 08 Jun 2005 - 21:47
lol why Waste money on just creating the N why not just change new version of xp so the users can enable or disable the player at setup.
then microsoft can not be at fault because its up to the users and pc makers/sellers

id just like to add a congratulations to microsoft on doing this for the stuck up petty people even though i personally think they didnt have to.
I think if a user didnt want mircosoft or the other companies felt threatened.. then i dont think people should use Microsoft OS. I feel that mircosoft can put whatever they want on their own operating system and it bugs me to understand why people ask them to change their software (which is used to help users) just because they arent happy themselves. Maybe REAL should make their own OS?

Thats just my thoughts

stupid M$ and EU why not make it cheaper that would be a good option but if it priced the same thing i rather get the full version.

Well duh, that's what Microsoft (not M$) wants you to do. Why would they want people to buy a version without Media Player? They only made this stupid stripped down version to get the EU off their backs, but they still want people to buy the one with Media Player so by making them the same price guess which one most people will choose...

Stupid EU yes. Stupid Microsoft? Hardly.
Quote this comment #12.2 Posted by bryonhowley on 09 Jun 2005 - 06:14
First its MS or Microsoft NOT M$!!! And why would they make it cheaper? They removed a FREE product from the OS. The key would would be free. There is no reason they would or should make it cheaper. What they should have done was told the EU to go ****ed themselfs and removed there product! If the users what Real Audio they can download the crap. It is not Microsofts fault that Real Player has sucked ass for so long that people don't what to use it. Even if it is better now I would never download it. But that is my choose. Just as it is to not use Media player. The simple fact is you do not need to remove Media Player inorder to use something else.

... well if theyre going to go and yell at MS about WMP.... then im going to complain that Mac OS has iTunes AND quicktime... HA! see why arnt they going after apple? (no offence to the apple ppl here, im a user of both OSs... heheeh OSs... lols sorry .... getting a grip now) but i mean seriously... microsoft should make it so that their OS comes with a choise of select programs so its like durring setup it says:
choose which media player to install:
WMP
itunes
real
jet audio
winamp
....
....
choose which interent browser to instal
IE
firefox
opera
....
....
and so on. :p
Quote this comment #13.1 Posted by Pierreken on 09 Jun 2005 - 06:31
They can't add all the media players available to their list, can they?
Small (less known) players should have a chance too.

Why they don't go after Apple? Because it's all about monopoly, once Apple get's the same market share (if ever) they will ask them too for something like this.

Which is the problem with Monopoly commisions, they exist more to get in the way of sucsessful business than help out! Monopolies are a problem when the business uses their position to charge unrealistic prices for products, which quite frankly I don't believe MS do, and I've never tried to install a third-party program and had Windows tell me 'Sorry, we didn't write this, you can't have it' !
The fact is these days that there are huge numbers of people buying PCs who havn't a clue how to use them really. For these people they NEED MS to provide all their software, taking WMP out will just make things harder for them.

The EU had the perfect opportunity to show Microsoft that their devious and underhand sales tactics won't work in Europe. What do they do with it? Let Microsoft stitch them up. I despair. Whoever agreed this as a condition and resolution measure should be fired.
