In the next day or so Microsoft is planning to release the next beta of its anti-spyware package. This isn't beta 2, however, which isn't due until December. But it does address some Winsock/ISP issues and better descriptions.

Check out the whole thing.

I really thought the final product was due out this summer. It sounds like it has been pushed by until sometime next year.

Suspicions are that it will tightly interface with IE 7, not because it says the expiry date is December 31, 2005, necessarily means its a 2006 product, you have betas that are RTM'ed before their expiry dates (Windows XP Pro x64 RC won't expire until about next year, yet it has been RTM'ed since April). Its great news though and it will be coming in a few days, I am so excited.

If beta 2 isn't due until December (due as in that is when it is published) then I don't see how RTM could happen this year. Unless beta 2 is actualy more of an RC1 and it goes through testing super quickly.

Finally!

That's odd. I updated yesterday but when it was complete it still said Beta1. It prompted me to do so and like a google little Lemming I complied.

That's because it wasn't released yet, according to this article.

beta 2 is a long time from now
#5 k22 on 23 Jun 2005 - 02:35
wtf I guess it will not be final until Longhorn launches next summer.

i was thinking this summer/fall with IE 7 but looks like it will still be beta at that point

Wonder if Beta 2 being so far ahead means it will only come in the bundle with the AV, and firewall.

I could have sworn I read somewhere it was supposed to be released this summer. Maybe it was summer '06..

Crazy that beta 2 isn't ready until december.....
They are updating this because the current version is set to expire in july

Compared to how often serious anti-spyware products like Spybot S&D and Lavasoft's AdAware get updates, mircosoft 's offering does not cut the mustard.
In short: M$ is once again being lame.

it's obv to most people they are talking the time to make sure this product is right the first time. once they release a final 1.0 version, then you can scream about regular updates to the dats etc...but at this point give them the time they need ot develop the best product possilbe. would you rather they release some crap now or make a better product later?
#10.2 rob.derosa on 23 Jun 2005 - 09:20
have you failed to realise that the product is still in beta stage? which means it has been released for testing, it is NOT a completed product.
#10.3 hosebeast on 23 Jun 2005 - 09:53
The beta already gets data updates frequently. This announcement is talking about a software update. Spybot and AdAware seldom update their software. Take for instance AdAware SE: Version 1.05 was released in September 2004 and 1.06 (minor updates, based on the version numbers) was released in May 2005. That's 8 months between minor updates. Spybot S&D 1.3 (final, not beta) was released in May 2004, and 1.4 (again, final not beta) was released in May 2005. That's a full year.

As hosebeast said, MS AntiSpyware gets updates to its definition files whenever new threats are identified... ie, all the time.

There have even been a couple minor engine updates once or twice. That's more than Adaware and Spybot have had in the same time.

I'm still using the "Giant" version of the antispyware....it updates definitions just about
every day...

I wonder why they contradict themselves? I quote :
"Beta 2, which some are expecting to debut as early as next month, might include more cookie-scanning/management, according to industry scuttlebutt Bink said. When asked whether that might be so, Microsoft's Bryan said that Microsoft will continue to investigate whether the "user experience around cookies needs refinement." But he added that users today can use Internet Explorer 6.0 controls to manage both Microsoft and third-party cookies, unbeknownst to most users."

Oh good - My copy expires in 31 days...
#14 mgorbach on 23 Jun 2005 - 17:21
Im noticing that when it shows a new startup entry ... all the path shows is c:
instead of the filename ... I wonder if someones found that bug.
Also, it casues problems with some software: IE powerdvd, slickrun, and others.
It is still however the best antispyware app iv seen, and the best looking.
