Following closely on the heels of our posting yesterday, Microsoft has updated the AntiSpyware application to build 614, up 1 from build 613 which was discussed on Steve Dodson's Blog and posted here yesterday.

Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.

As posted yesterday, the main improvements are that the software expiration has been extended to December 31, 2005, users who dock their start bar on the sides of their screen will now be able to read messages generated from Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware (beta) and improvements for removing spyware and spyware definitions. The update includes improved Winsock LSP removal capabilities and support for long descriptions of categorized software.

Download: Microsoft AntiSpyware (build 614) | 6.50 MB

This download requires (WGA) Windows Genuine Advantage verification, the software is also free for all licensed Windows XP (SP2) users.

Key findings of the study include:
  • On a per-asset basis, the Microsoft platform is less expensive to patch than a similar OSS environment:
-Windows desktops cost 14 percent less to patch than Linux desktops.
-Windows servers cost 13 percent less to patch than Linux servers.
-Windows database servers cost 33 percent less to patch than Linux database servers.
  • OSS-based systems faced with high-level and critical vulnerabilities are at risk longer than comparable Windows-based systems.
  • Survey respondents consistently overestimated the number of Windows vulnerabilities, while underestimating those for OSS.
  • Through the use of best practices, Windows patching costs can be reduced by up to 55 percent.

The genuine verification is not verifying anything for me, just go to the page and a Download button is there; I don't have a genuine OS but I can still get this program Anyway, for those who can't click on the Download button, here you go:

h*tp://download.microsoft.com/download/8/1/5/815d2d60-49b5-44dc-ae35-fca2f2c6f0cc/MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe

Edit: Mine also shows build 613.

Get real MS try reducing the number of ways in rather than guarding them

i remember when there was only a hand full of ways.
1, removable disk Floppy, CD etc
2, running a bad program by CLICKING IT!! or saying Yes!
3, someone bundling it with a trusted program (from Internet, Removable media etc)

and well that was it,
what are the rest the 47 claimed methods,
what are they, all automated methods i guess?

I'm shocked MS isnt charging for Anti virus and Spyware tools as they seem to have encouraged these problem so they can
a. easily sell next OS (upgrade to the most secure MS OS to date)
b. consumers will frantically buy ms tools to fix them (a.k.a Extorsion)

OR... maybe, as millions of people hammer away at Microsoft's software each day, learning about its every weakness, trying to poke holes, make workarounds, and invent ever more clever ways to get advertising on people's systems, they decided to give you some free software to help deal with the problem. GOD FORBID!!! EVIL M$!! bleh bla moohoo bleeaha

my build version still says 1.0.613

i downloaded it from the link neowin provided me, and installed it. i had to reboot, and still on the same old version??
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #13 Posted by krzemien on 25 Jun 2005 - 15:44
Obviously there's something wrong. I've just downloaded MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe in both ways: Using direct link provided above and using http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en with windows validation process (I've own a genuine one).

And after upgrade I still can see in Help -> About:

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.613
This version expires on: 31-12-2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5727 (25-06-2005 16:58:01)

I've also removed, rebooted and reinstalled MSAS. And the results are still the same.

Some are getting updates automaticly, some work, some don't. What's going on?
(2 replies) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #15 Posted by rdhw on 25 Jun 2005 - 16:26
Those of you downloading and installing, only to discover you still have a version earlier than 614, proably have an ISP which enforces a transparent web proxy cache, or you need to clear your own browser cache.
Quote this comment #15.1 Posted by slysy on 25 Jun 2005 - 17:07
I ran ccleaner and redownloaded and im now on 614 so thanks. By the way are you the rdhw that wrote the cable modem pages? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/ . If so I remember you from nthellworld, small world hey

Hurray!

b-man was right, I just did it

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.614
This version expires on: 31-12-2005
Spyware Definition Version: 5727 (25-06-2005 18:32:37)

A new (1.0.614) MicrosoftAntiSpywareInstall.exe should have 6 816 904 bytes.

Just clear your browser's cache, CTRL+F5 doesn't solve this problem.

Workourand to instal the new Microsoft AntiSpyware (build 614):

First delete the previous version in software delete programs + After that you must manually delete the map: Crogram FilesMicrosoft AntiSpyware
Or the map where you have it installed.

Now install the new version and youre done!

Greetz, Carlo

My version seems to be working fine, all updates are done, even if it's not include this one. I am keeping this untill something else changes. That's too much work just to update.

BUG (and fi:
To anyone getting the error where you click "Real-time Protection" and it says 18 agents running or 100 checkpoints active, but in reality doesn't show them properly or shows them disabled.... This is a bug with the Visual Basic dll's. Apparently, this program requires the latest/greatest VB6 runtime, but the installer doesn't check/install it.

So, the solution is to first close Microsoft Antispyware, then download and install Visual Basic 6.0 SP6 Run-Time Redistributable Pack from Microsoft... available by searching for "vbrun60sp6.exe" or by visiting --- HERE (Download at Microsoft) --- Then, when you power up Antispyware, it should show 59 checkpoints all on duty, and you should be able to actually SEE them, visible and enabled.

Good luck, and enjoy
