ATI Technologies confirmed during the last quarter’s conference call that its forthcoming graphics processor code-named R520 has been delayed, however, reassured investors and analysts that this Fall it would have a lineup of visual processing units produced using 90nm process technology. The news came right after commercial launch of NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GTX graphics chip, the fastest performing graphics accelerator to date.

ATI R520 Delayed, but “Under Control”

“In the case of the R520 we have seen some delay. Particularly, we need to deal with a new technology at the high-end. It’s a combination of both architectural and [process] technology bring up. We have this well under control now. As Patrick described, we’ve taken a cautious position to not to consider revenues in our Q4 for our 90nm line,” said David Orton, the CEO of ATI.

I'd like to see what ATI can dish out to beat nVidia..

Although I too like nVidia, ATI has owned the speed margin for a little while. Now, if their drivers and overall product was appealing to me.

What do you think is wrong with their drivers, parithon?

ATI doesn't own anything right now buddy. the 7800 rules the roost, is available right now, and ATI has nothing to match it and they know it.

i dont get it...
nVidia is faster than ATI right now... the 7800 is fastest.....
am i missing something here?

You are right. the 7800 is the fastest card available atm. Before that two 6800s in SLI were the fastest. ATI's refresh of the x800 series, x850 was faster than the top 6800s but not but enough for bragging rights. ATI's last cards to "own" were the 96/97/98 series. Even when ATI does release their new chip, rumor is Nvidia has a secret version of the 7800 planned to counter it with 32 pipes and even higher clock speeds.

it's a see-saw

remember in 2002/2003 when the nVidia gf fx "hoover" debacle and the terrific ati 9500-9700 series? the pendulum is swinging the other way. It'll probably swing back. Just maybe not this year.

Hey, anyone remember back in the day when 3dfx was king and nVidia and ATI were both but a gleam in someone's eye?
I wonder who could de-throne the current princes of VPUs?
#5.1 SquareSoft0 on 28 Jun 2005 - 04:47
Obviously nobody for a long while, with absolute control over the artificially inflated prices we see today.

ahhhh 3dfx now there was a cracking set of cards I had a voodoo 1 and 2x voodoo2s

those were the days F16 MRF/Mig-29 in 1024x768 loveliness with SLI`d V2s woot!

since then its been nvidia (TNT2U) all the way until the fx range then it was a 9800pro for me.

now im back to nvidia with a 6800gt golden sample

both card companies are as good as each other.

ATI have the history of card making whereas NVidia started off as employees of SGI to break away to form what we know as Nvidia. They specialised in graphics chips for SGI workstations.
