As the war between the two web giants, Google & Yahoo, rages on, AOL joins the arena by quietly launching a new video-on-demand service.

AOL Video Beta, launched Thrusday, grants users the access to over 15,000 licensed and original videos from Time Warner, including music videos, news segments from CNN & MSNBC and Warner Bros. movie trailers.

AOL is expected to only officially announce the new beta service on Tuesday, but users can already access the service by visiting the AOL search homepage, and selecting the 'Video Search' on the menu on the left.

It's not clear whether Famitsu is simply basing an assumption on the inclusion of the drive on Kutaragi's previous comments, or if the magazine actually has new information about Sony's thinking on the matter.

If PS3 doesn't ship with a hard drive, it will give an edge to the Xbox 360, particularly in terms of massively multiplayer games - an increasingly popular genre which currently requires significant amounts of storage on the client side. Sony may be hoping, however, that the PS3's superior capabilities for removable storage, which includes slots for Memory Stick and other types of high-capacity memory cards, will allow MMOGs to be played on the console even without a drive.

It's also possible that Sony may adopt the approach which many commentators expected Microsoft to follow with the Xbox 360, by launching two versions of the PS3 - one without a hard drive and with limited media capabilities, and a more expensive model with a hard drive and full media functionality.

I was excited about this after I saw what AOL did in the Online Spotlight section of Windows Media Center.
Unfortunately when I try to play videos. It says AOL media plug-in required with no link to the plug-in.

I figured it out. I am logged in as a non-admin. I peeked at the source to figure out that it need Winamp.
Now it works fine.

I like AOL & Yahoo's service. I can never find anything worthwhile in Google.
Kudos to AOL.

Sort of like how RealOne insists you use it's products and that no other product but RealOne will work with Real Video.
Meanwhile, RealAlternitive works just fine with Real Video.

Anyways, here's what I get when I try and use http://search.aol.com/aolcom/video

We're working hard to put the finishing touches on our new video player. During this beta period, we don't yet support Firefox 1.0.1+. For best results, please use Internet Explorer.

Playback is also available in the following browsers:

* - Firefox 1.0
* - Netscape 7.1+

If you'll excuse me, my head is about to explode.

Only works on Intetnet Explorer btw (for now). But it works great, the "Browse Videos" section that opens up after you launch a video seems to be more advanced than MSN Video.

Two web giants?

What about MSN?

In the world of the average user, MSN doesn't come close to Yahoo or Google.
